It’s one thing to believe when everything is clear.
It’s another to believe when everything is dark.
In Matthew 9:27–31, two blind men pursue Jesus with urgency and confidence. They could have stayed silent, defeated by their condition. Instead, they cry out boldly—and Jesus responds.
Let’s unpack how this miracle speaks directly to us today.
Who Is Jesus Interacting With?
- Two blind men, physically impaired but spiritually aware.
- Crowds, likely viewing their cries as disruptive.
- Jesus, who pauses to respond and test their faith.
What Jesus Said: Matthew 9:27–31 (NASB)
27 As Jesus went on from there, two men who were blind followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” 28 When He entered the house, the men who were blind came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “It shall be done for you according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows about this!” 31 But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout that land.
The Mood of the Scene
- Persistent.
- Urgent.
- Full of anticipation.
- A tension between obedience and overflowing joy.
These men refused to be passive. They pressed in, and their faith moved Jesus to act.
The Cry of Faith: “Have Mercy on Us, Son of David!”
They call Jesus by His Messianic title—“Son of David”—a name full of power and prophecy.
Though blind, they saw what the crowds often missed: Jesus was the promised King and Healer.
Action Step: What are you calling Jesus in your life? Don’t just cry out to God—know who He is. Call Him by His name. Declare His authority in your circumstance.
Jesus’ Question: “Do You Believe I Am Able?”
Jesus doesn’t assume anything. He brings their belief into focus.
He’s not just testing their words—He’s drawing out authentic faith.
And they answer clearly: “Yes, Lord.”
Action Step: Jesus still asks this question in 2025. When you face darkness, do you still believe He is able? Say yes—and keep saying it.
The Touch of Power and the Warning of Silence
Jesus touches their eyes, and they are healed immediately.
Yet, He instructs them not to tell anyone. Why? Likely because His time had not yet come, and the crowds’ misunderstanding of His mission could interfere.
But joy overrides silence, and they spread the news anyway.
Action Step: Let your testimony be louder than your struggle. Even if Jesus tells you to wait, never stop praising Him for what He’s done.
What This Means for Us in 2025
In an age of noise and doubt, spiritual blindness is everywhere—but so is the opportunity for healing.
These two men show us how to pursue Jesus with urgency, call on His name with clarity, and believe for breakthrough even in the dark.
Whether you’re blinded by circumstance, delay, or confusion, Jesus is still asking:
“Do you believe I am able to do this?”
Application for Today:
- Cry out to Jesus unashamedly. He hears bold, faith-filled prayers.
- Don’t wait for perfect circumstances—pursue Him in your imperfection.
- Answer Jesus with a confident “Yes, Lord” no matter how dark it feels.
- Celebrate your healing—even when others say stay silent.
- Share the miracle—your story could stir someone else’s faith.
Final Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Son of David, my Healer and King. I cry out to You today—not in fear, but in faith. I believe You are able. And I believe You are willing. Touch my eyes, touch my life, and give me vision beyond what I can see. Amen.
