Jesus Mocked and Crucified: Endurance with Eternal Purpose

Matthew 27:27–44 provides a detailed account of Jesus being mocked and crucified.

Even in humiliation, Jesus fulfilled God’s redemptive plan.

Matthew 27:27–44 (NASB 2020)

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort to Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a red cloak on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand; and they knelt before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head. 31 And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. 32 As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they compelled to carry His cross. 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him wine mixed with bile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it. 35 And when they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among themselves by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 38 At that time two rebels were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were speaking abusively to Him, shaking their heads, 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him, saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He takes pleasure in Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 The rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

  • Yet filled with profound significance: the Lamb of God bearing our sin

  • Jesus chose obedience despite suffering and humiliation
  • He never defended Himself, proving love is stronger than pride
  • He showed us how to endure injustice without losing our witness

Audience Response (Then)

  • Soldiers mocked what they didn’t understand
  • Leaders reveled in what they thought was victory
  • The crowd followed blindly
  • Even the criminals participated in the mockery

What This Means for Us in 2025

  • You may face scorn, but your purpose is greater than their opinion
  • Obedience will cost you something—but it will never be in vain
  • God can redeem even your most painful moments for His glory

Action Steps for Today

  1. Respond to mockery with grace. Let your silence speak louder than your defense
  2. Carry your cross daily. Endure discomfort for the sake of Christ
  3. Stay obedient under pressure. Your faithfulness matters
  4. Trust that suffering is not wasted. God uses pain for a purpose
  5. Reflect Christ in suffering. Let your life point to Him, not yourself

Final Prayer

Lord Jesus, You were mocked, beaten, and crucified—yet You never wavered. Give me that same strength to endure trials and rejection. Let my life testify to Your love, even when it costs me everything. Make me faithful like You. In Your holy name, Amen.

The cross was not the end—it was the beginning of eternal victory. Walk in that power.
