Jesus prays and preaches

Jesus Prays and Preaches (Mark 1:35–39)

Audience of the Gospel of Mark

Mark continues to write to believers under pressure—followers surrounded by worldly distractions and Roman urgency. Among these challenges, Jesus prays and preaches, exemplifying a picture of Jesus as a decisive, mission-driven servant, and here we see that in action.

Key Focus of the Passage

After healing many in Capernaum, Jesus steps away. He retreats to a solitary place to pray. When the disciples urge Him back to the crowds, He surprises them—He’s not here to settle but to spread the message. This passage reveals the priority of prayer and the purpose of preaching.

Scripture: Mark 1:35–39 (NASB)

And in the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and prayed there for a time. Simon and his companions eagerly searched for Him;
and they found Him and said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You!” He said to them, “Let’s go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may also preach there; for this is why I came.” And He went into their synagogues preaching throughout Galilee, and casting out the demons.

Person/People Jesus Interacted With

  • God the Father in prayer
  • Simon and the other disciples
  • The people of Galilee (through preaching)

What Happened?

After an exhausting evening of ministry, Jesus doesn’t sleep in—He rises early to spend time with the Father. When the disciples find Him and express that “everyone is looking for You,” He makes a pivotal choice. He refocuses on His mission: not just healing, but proclaiming the gospel to many towns.

Mood of the Moment

  • Still. Centered. Strategic. Obedient.
  • There’s a quiet power here—Jesus is not driven by demand, but by divine direction.

What Jesus Said

“Let’s go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may also preach there; for this is why I came.”

Jesus clarifies His mission. He’s not here to build a healing center in Capernaum. He’s here to preach the kingdom—to go where people haven’t heard.

Response of the Others

  • The disciples are confused—they think Jesus should capitalize on the momentum.
  • The crowds are eager but unaware of Jesus’ bigger purpose.
  • Jesus remains undistracted—His time in prayer brings clarity and courage to obey.

Lesson for Us in 2025

  1. Start With Solitude: Jesus modeled that clarity comes in the quiet. Before saying yes to every opportunity, get alone with the Father.
  2. Don’t Chase Crowds: Popularity isn’t purpose. Jesus walked away from the crowd to fulfill His calling. Will you?
  3. Stay On Mission: You were made for more than applause. If you’ve lost your direction, return to prayer and rediscover your why.
  4. Preach, Don’t Just Perform: Healing and help are important, but the gospel must remain central.

Prayer aligns our heart with heaven’s agenda. Preaching follows that alignment with action.

Next up, Jesus encounters a man with leprosy—a powerful moment of touch, compassion, and cleansing. Don’t miss the tender power in what happens next.

When you pray early, you’ll walk in purpose all day.
