In Matthew 22:41–46, Jesus questions the Pharisees
Scripture: Matthew 22:41–46 (NASB 2020)
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: 42 “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies under Your feet”’? 45 Therefore, if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.
Who Was Jesus Speaking To?
- The Pharisees, after He had answered all their questions
- A crowd is likely present and listening
- Us today, inviting us to think more deeply about who Christ truly is
What Happened?
- Jesus turned the tables and questioned His interrogators
- He asked about the Messiah’s identity—whose son is He?
- The Pharisees answered, “the son of David,” but Jesus challenged them with Scripture
- He quoted Psalm 110:1 to show the Messiah is greater than David
The Mood: Confrontational, Revealing, Final
- Jesus boldly exposed the limits of their understanding
- The Pharisees were stunned into silence
- The moment marked a shift—no more testing questions followed
The Principle: Jesus Is Both Lord and Son
- Jesus is not just the descendant of David—He is David’s Lord
- The Messiah is not just a political figure, but a divine Savior
- Understanding Christ’s nature is foundational to faith
Audience Response (Then)
- The Pharisees had no answer
- They stopped challenging Jesus publicly after this
- The listeners likely saw Jesus’ divine insight more clearly
What This Means for Us in 2025
In an age full of opinions about who Jesus is:
- We must ground our view in Scripture, not assumption
- Jesus is both human and divine—the eternal Lord
- Let Him question our hearts and expand our understanding
Action Steps for Today
- Read Psalm 110. Reflect on its prophetic power.
- Acknowledge Jesus as Lord. Not just in theory, but in practice.
- Study Scripture more deeply. Let Jesus reveal Himself to you.
- Be willing to be corrected. Growth comes from humility.
- Proclaim His identity. In a confused world, clarity is power.
Final Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Son of David and the Son of God. Help me to see You rightly—as both Savior and King. Reveal truth to my heart that silences all doubt. In Your name, Amen.
When you know who Jesus truly is, every question finds its answer.
