Mary visits Elizabeth

Mary Visits Elizabeth: Faith Recognizes the Work of God (Luke 1:39–56)

When Mary visits Elizabeth, one of the most joyful interactions in the early chapters of Luke unfolds. What began as a quiet announcement to Mary now becomes a shared moment of prophetic recognition and praise.

Through this encounter, Luke reveals that even before Jesus is born, God’s plan is already stirring hearts and confirming His promises.

The Audience Luke Is Writing To

Luke writes to Theophilus and other readers seeking certainty about the Gospel message. Therefore, Luke carefully records the testimonies surrounding Jesus’ birth to show that these events were witnessed, recognized, and celebrated by those closest to them.

This moment also demonstrates how God’s work becomes visible through the faithful responses of His people.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Mission

The focus of this passage is recognition of the Messiah and joyful praise for God’s faithfulness. Even before Jesus is born, God reveals His plan through the reactions of Elizabeth and the unborn John the Baptist.

Scripture: Luke 1:39–56 (NASB)

Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.” And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him. He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble. He has filled the hungry with good things; And sent away the rich empty-handed. He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever.” And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.

The People in the Interaction

This moment includes:

  • Mary, carrying the promised Messiah
  • Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit
  • The unborn John the Baptist, who reacts to the presence of Jesus
  • God, whose promises are being fulfilled

What Happened in the Scene

Mary travels to visit her relative Elizabeth. When Mary greets her, the unborn John leaps inside Elizabeth’s womb. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth recognizes Mary as the mother of the Messiah.

Mary then responds with a powerful declaration of praise known as the Magnificat, celebrating God’s faithfulness and mercy.

Mood and Tone

The tone of this moment is joyful, prophetic, and worshipful. Instead of fear or confusion, the interaction becomes an outpouring of praise for what God is doing.

What Elizabeth Said

Elizabeth declares:

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

She also affirms Mary’s faith:

“Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”

Mary’s Response: The Magnificat

Mary’s song praises God for His mercy and faithfulness.

Her words reveal several important truths:

  • God lifts up the humble
  • God fulfills His promises
  • God shows mercy across generations
  • God remains faithful to Israel

The Response of the Others

Elizabeth responds with prophetic recognition.

John leaps in the womb.

Mary responds with praise and worship.

Together, their responses reveal deep faith in God’s promises.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Faith Recognizes God’s Work

Elizabeth immediately recognizes that God is fulfilling His promise.

2. True Faith Produces Joy

Even the unborn John responds with joy to the presence of the Messiah.

3. Worship Is the Proper Response to God’s Grace

Mary responds not with fear but with praise.

4. God Honors the Humble

Mary celebrates that God lifts up those the world often overlooks.

Final Reflection

This interaction shows that God’s promises bring joy long before their full fulfillment appears.

Before Jesus performs a single miracle or teaches a single sermon, the presence of the Messiah already transforms lives.

And Mary’s song reminds every generation of the same truth:

God remembers His promises.
