{"id":2671,"date":"2025-09-08T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=2671"},"modified":"2025-08-22T06:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T11:54:09","slug":"you-are-the-salt-and-light-matthew-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/you-are-the-salt-and-light-matthew-5\/","title":{"rendered":"You Are the Salt and Light: Influence with Purpose in a Dark World"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">After blessing the humble and persecuted, Jesus immediately shifts His message from&nbsp;<strong>attitudes to impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He doesn\u2019t just describe how kingdom people live inwardly\u2014He shows how they are to live&nbsp;<strong>outwardly<\/strong>&nbsp;in a broken world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">His message in Matthew 5:13\u201316 is as urgent and relevant in 2025 as it was when He first spoke it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-jesus-speaking-to\"><strong>Who Is Jesus Speaking To?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus is still speaking to the\u00a0<strong>disciples and the crowd<\/strong>\u00a0gathered on the hillside. But His words are\u00a0<strong>direct and personal<\/strong>. He doesn\u2019t say, \u201cYou might be\u2026\u201d or \u201cTry to be\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cYou are the salt of the earth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cYou are the light of the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These are&nbsp;<strong>identity declarations<\/strong>, not spiritual aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-jesus-said-matthew-5-13-16-nasb\"><strong>What Jesus Said: Matthew 5:13\u201316 (NASB)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>13\u00a0\u201cYou are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.\u201d 14\u00a0\u201cYou are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15\u00a0nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16\u00a0Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-salt-of-the-earth-preserve-what-s-good\"><strong>Salt of the Earth: Preserve What\u2019s Good<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In Jesus\u2019 time, salt preserved food from decay. Without refrigeration, salt was essential for keeping things from rotting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When Jesus says, <strong>\u201cYou are the salt,\u201d<\/strong> He\u2019s saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">You\u00a0<strong>preserve righteousness<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">You\u00a0<strong>influence culture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">You\u00a0<strong>slow the decay<\/strong>\u00a0by your presence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But there\u2019s a warning here too:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cIf the salt has become tasteless\u2026 it is no longer good for anything\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Salt that loses its distinctiveness becomes useless. The same is true for Christians who blend into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>Action Step:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Ask yourself\u2014Is my life preserving the truth and integrity around me, or blending into decay?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-light-of-the-world-illuminate-the-darkness\"><strong>Light of the World: Illuminate the Darkness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus also says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cYou are the light of the world\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a dark and confused generation,&nbsp;<strong>you carry the light<\/strong>&nbsp;of Jesus. Light isn\u2019t silent. It&nbsp;<strong>exposes<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>guides<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>protects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus goes on to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cA city set on a hill cannot be hidden\u2026 nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In other words, your faith was&nbsp;<strong>meant to be seen<\/strong>. Not for your glory\u2014but for God\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201c\u2026so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Your life is meant to&nbsp;<strong>point others to Him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><strong>Action Step:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Do something this week that visibly reflects God\u2019s light\u2014serve, speak up, or give generously, and let it lead others to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mood-of-the-scene\"><strong>Mood of the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is not a gentle suggestion\u2014it\u2019s a&nbsp;<strong>bold commissioning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus empowers His followers with&nbsp;<strong>responsibility<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The mood is upward, motivating, and direct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You have a&nbsp;<strong>role to play<\/strong>&nbsp;in this world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-response-from-the-crowd\"><strong>Response from the Crowd<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Though silent in this passage, the crowd would have been&nbsp;<strong>challenged<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus was calling ordinary people to an extraordinary purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And today, He still is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-for-us-in-2025\"><strong>What This Means for Us in 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a world increasingly confused, divided, and darkened by sin, Jesus says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cYou are the salt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cYou are the light.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You don\u2019t need a platform or a pulpit. You need to\u00a0<strong>stay salty<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>shine brightly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-practical-takeaways-for-today\"><strong>Practical Takeaways for Today:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Speak truth<\/strong>\u00a0even when it\u2019s unpopular.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Stand firm<\/strong>\u00a0when compromise is easier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Serve others<\/strong>\u00a0so they see Jesus in you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Shine through action<\/strong>, not just opinion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-prayer\"><strong>Final Prayer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me salt and light. Help me preserve what is good and reflect Your truth in a world that desperately needs it. Let my life be visible\u2014not for attention\u2014but for Your glory. Empower me to influence culture, not conform to it.
