In Matthew 9, His words didn\u2019t echo in a synagogue\u2014they were spoken at a tax booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He wasn\u2019t calling the religious elite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He wasn\u2019t choosing the morally perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And He looked at Matthew, a man labeled a traitor and a thief, and said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cFollow Me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-jesus-interacting-with\"><strong>Who Is Jesus Interacting With?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Matthew<\/strong>, also called Levi, a tax collector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A room full of\u00a0<strong>\u201csinners\u201d and outcasts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A group of\u00a0<strong>critical Pharisees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus\u2019 disciples<\/strong>, watching and learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-jesus-said-matthew-9-9-13-nasb\"><strong>What Jesus Said: Matthew 9:9\u201313 (NASB)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>9\u00a0As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax office; and He said to him, \u201cFollow Me!\u201d And he got up and followed Him. 10\u00a0Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and began dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11\u00a0And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, \u201cWhy is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?\u201d 12\u00a0But when Jesus heard this, He said, \u201cIt is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Now go and learn what this means: \u2018I desire compassion, rather than sacrifice,\u2019 for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-simple-call-a-radical-shift\"><strong>A Simple Call, A Radical Shift<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus didn\u2019t give a lecture. He didn\u2019t demand that Matthew first clean up his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He simply said:&nbsp;<strong>\u201cFollow Me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><strong>Action Step:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Don\u2019t wait until you\u2019re \u201cgood enough.\u201d If Jesus is calling you, drop your excuses and walk into your new life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-tax-collector-to-apostle\"><strong>From Tax Collector to Apostle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Matthew was despised by Jews. Working for Rome, he profited by exploiting his own people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But Jesus saw more than a job title. He saw a heart ready for transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>Action Step:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Your career, your past, your reputation\u2014none of it disqualifies you. When Jesus calls, your history becomes His platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jesus-eats-with-sinners\"><strong>Jesus Eats with Sinners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At Matthew\u2019s house, Jesus reclines with outcasts, not the righteous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The religious leaders are appalled. But Jesus is not after image\u2014He\u2019s after&nbsp;<strong>hearts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><strong>Action Step:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Make room at your table. Be willing to bring others closer to Jesus through connection, not condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-pharisees-judgment\"><strong>The Pharisees\u2019 Judgment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Instead of celebrating transformation, the Pharisees criticized association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They asked, \u201cWhy does your teacher eat with these people?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus flips the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>He came for the sick\u2014not the self-satisfied.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><strong>Action Step:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Don\u2019t let a religious spirit creep in. Grace is for the messy. And healing starts with honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-go-and-learn-what-this-means\"><strong>\u201cGo and Learn What This Means\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus quotes&nbsp;<strong>Hosea 6:6<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cI desire compassion, not sacrifice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He\u2019s reminding them\u2014and us\u2014that external religion is worthless without internal mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><strong>Action Step:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Show compassion today. Don\u2019t just go to church\u2014be the Church. Love the ones others avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-mood-of-the-scene\"><strong>The Mood of the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Personal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Confrontational.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Redemptive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Joyful for the broken, offensive to the self-righteous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus disrupts expectations. He didn\u2019t come to fit in\u2014He came to bring the kingdom to the unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-for-us-in-2025\"><strong>What This Means for Us in 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a world obsessed with image, credentials, and religious boxes, Jesus is still calling people from&nbsp;<strong>unlikely places<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The single dad working night shifts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The former addict now rebuilding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The overlooked mom raising future leaders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The burned-out business owner seeking purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus says,&nbsp;<strong>\u201cFollow Me.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;And the story starts fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-application-for-today\"><strong>Application for Today:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Say yes\u2014immediately. Don\u2019t delay obedience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Invite others to the table\u2014even if they don\u2019t look \u201creligious.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Watch out for spiritual pride. Stay compassionate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Recognize your past doesn\u2019t disqualify your purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Let Jesus rewrite your life\u2014starting now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-prayer\"><strong>Final Prayer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus, thank You for seeing me\u2014not as I\u2019ve been labeled, but as I truly am. Thank You for calling me from my brokenness into purpose. I accept Your call to follow. Change me, use me, and make my life a testimony of Your grace.
