It was a spiritual turning point\u2014and a foreshadowing of the cost Jesus would later pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-matthew-14-1-12-nasb-2020\"><strong>Matthew 14:1\u201312 (NASB 2020)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1<\/strong>\u00a0At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, <strong>2<\/strong>\u00a0and said to his servants, \u201cThis is John the Baptist; he himself has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.\u201d <strong>3<\/strong>\u00a0For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. <strong>4<\/strong>\u00a0For John had been saying to him, \u201cIt is not lawful for you to have her.\u201d <strong>5<\/strong>\u00a0Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet. <strong>6<\/strong>\u00a0But when Herod\u2019s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, <strong>7<\/strong>\u00a0so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. <strong>8<\/strong>\u00a0And after being prompted by her mother, she\u00a0<em>said<\/em>, \u201cGive me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.\u201d <strong>9<\/strong>\u00a0And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths and his dinner guests. <strong>10<\/strong>\u00a0He sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison. <strong>11<\/strong>\u00a0And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. <strong>12<\/strong>\u00a0His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-was-involved\"><strong>Who Was Involved?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>John the Baptist<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the bold forerunner of Jesus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Herod Antipas<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the ruler of Galilee, enslaved by fear and pride<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Herodias<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 driven by offense and revenge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Herodias\u2019 daughter<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a pawn in a wicked plot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 who hears the news and responds with purpose and power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened\"><strong>What Happened?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Herod had arrested John for boldly declaring the truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt is not lawful for you to have her.\u201d (v. 4)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">John had confronted Herod\u2019s immoral marriage to Herodias, his brother\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This prophetic rebuke sparked&nbsp;<strong>Herodias\u2019 hatred<\/strong>\u2014and her manipulative plot to silence John forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At Herod\u2019s birthday banquet, her daughter\u2019s dance pleased the king so much that he made a foolish oath. Pressured by public pride and Herodias\u2019 influence, Herod ordered&nbsp;<strong>John\u2019s execution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">His disciples buried the body and reported it to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-mood-tense-tragic-sobering\"><strong>The Mood: Tense, Tragic, Sobering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The setting was a&nbsp;<strong>lavish party<\/strong>, but the spiritual atmosphere was dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Pride, lust, manipulation, and fear led to the&nbsp;<strong>murder of a righteous man<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This wasn\u2019t just injustice\u2014it was prophetic fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">John had&nbsp;<strong>prepared the way for Christ<\/strong>, and now his death would prepare the way for Jesus\u2019 own sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-principle-truth-is-costly-but-eternally-worth-it\"><strong>The Principle: Truth is Costly\u2014But Eternally Worth It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">John\u2019s life and death remind us that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Speaking God\u2019s truth will often provoke\u00a0<strong>hostility<\/strong>, not applause<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Courage in faith may lead to earthly suffering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Popularity is fleeting\u2014<strong>but righteousness lasts forever<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Herod feared people more than he feared God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">John feared God more than he feared death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Only one left a legacy of eternal significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-audience-response-then\"><strong>Audience Response (Then)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Herod was&nbsp;<strong>haunted<\/strong>&nbsp;by guilt, believing Jesus was John \u201crisen from the dead\u201d (v. 2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">His conscience was pierced, but&nbsp;<strong>he still refused to repent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Herodias felt&nbsp;<strong>vindicated<\/strong>, but her spiritual darkness deepened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus received the news in verse 12, and what did He do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to the next verse (v. 13), \u201cHe withdrew\u2026 to a secluded place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He&nbsp;<strong>grieved the loss<\/strong>, then&nbsp;<strong>continued His mission<\/strong>&nbsp;with power and compassion\u2014immediately following this with the feeding of the 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-for-us-in-2025\"><strong>What This Means for Us in 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Cultural pressure today says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Stay quiet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Don\u2019t offend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Keep faith private.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Don\u2019t challenge immorality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But John shows us:&nbsp;<strong>Truth must be declared, even if it costs us<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 2025, believers are called to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Speak truth in love<\/strong>, not shrink in fear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Stand against cultural compromise<\/strong>, even when it\u2019s uncomfortable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Live boldly for Christ<\/strong>, regardless of what it may cost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-action-steps-for-today\"><strong>Action Steps for Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Speak the truth, even when it\u2019s unpopular.<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t trade silence for safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Count the cost of discipleship.<\/strong>\u00a0Are you following Christ only when it\u2019s convenient?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Refuse to be ruled by public opinion.<\/strong>\u00a0Be like John, not Herod.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Honor the legacy of the faithful.<\/strong>\u00a0Let John\u2019s boldness inspire your own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Press on in your mission.<\/strong>\u00a0Like Jesus, mourn what is lost but never lose your purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-prayer\"><strong>Final Prayer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Lord, thank You for the example of John the Baptist, who stood for truth until the end. Give me the courage to speak boldly, live righteously, and remain faithful under pressure. Help me trust You with the cost, knowing You are always worth it. May my life shine with uncompromising truth and eternal love.
