As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax office, and He\u00a0<em>said to him, \u201cFollow Me!\u201d And he stood up and followed Him.<\/em> And it\u00a0<em>happened that He<\/em>\u00a0was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, \u201cWhy is He eating with tax collectors and sinners?\u201d And hearing this, Jesus\u00a0<em>said to them, \u201cIt is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-audience-of-the-gospel-of-mark\">Audience of the Gospel of Mark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mark is still writing to Roman Gentile believers\u2014pragmatic and often outcast themselves. They would relate to Levi, a man seen as corrupt and beyond redemption. This passage, where Jesus calls Levi and eats with sinners, reinforces Jesus as a Savior who steps into the mess, not away from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-focus-and-character-of-jesus\">Key Focus and Character of Jesus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This passage highlights\u00a0<strong>Jesus\u2019 radical grace and inclusiveness<\/strong>. He not only calls someone despised to follow Him, but also dines with him and his community. The\u00a0character attribute\u00a0of Jesus revealed here is that of a\u00a0<strong>Merciful Friend of Sinners.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-person-people-jesus-interacted-with\">Person\/People Jesus Interacted With<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Levi (also called Matthew)<\/strong>, a tax collector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Many tax collectors and sinners were<\/strong> dining with Jesus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Scribes of the Pharisees<\/strong>, who challenge Jesus\u2019 choices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened\">What Happened?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus is teaching by the sea when He spots Levi in his tax booth. With two words\u2014&#8221;Follow Me&#8221;\u2014Jesus rewrites Levi\u2019s life. Levi immediately leaves his post and hosts a dinner where Jesus eats with many from his circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Pharisees are offended. How can Jesus, a teacher and miracle worker, eat with such people? Jesus answers:&nbsp;<strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t come for the righteous, but for sinners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mood-of-the-moment\">Mood of the Moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s contrast: celebration and condemnation. While Levi and his friends rejoice in Jesus\u2019 presence, the religious leaders are disturbed. This passage pulses with tension between&nbsp;<strong>grace and legalism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-jesus-said\">What Jesus Said<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cIt is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These words redefine holiness\u2014not as isolation from sinners, but presence among them to bring healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-response-of-others\">Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Levi<\/strong>\u00a0responded immediately with obedience and generosity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The tax collectors and sinners<\/strong>\u00a0accepted Jesus\u2019 welcome and followed Him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The religious leaders<\/strong>\u00a0responded with judgment and indignation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-for-us-in-2026\">Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus sees potential in outcasts<\/strong>: Levi was written off by society, but not by Jesus. Are there areas of your life where you\u2019ve believed you\u2019re unqualified? Jesus still says, \u201cFollow Me.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Grace looks messy to the religious<\/strong>: Expect backlash when you embrace people others reject. Jesus did.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Our tables can become mission fields<\/strong>: Levi used what he had\u2014a table, a network\u2014to bring people to Jesus.
