And they were watching Him closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. He said to the man with the withered hand, \u201cGet up and come forward!\u201d And He said to them, \u201cIs it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?\u201d But they kept silent. After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, \u201cStretch out your hand.\u201d And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might put Him to death.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-audience-of-the-gospel-of-mark\">Audience of the Gospel of Mark<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mark\u2019s audience, facing opposition for their faith, would immediately resonate with the portrayal of Jesus being watched and targeted for doing good, particularly for choosing to heal on the Sabbath. They were Gentile believers living under Roman rule, who needed encouragement to stand firm in the face of religious or governmental pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-focus-and-character-of-jesus\">Key Focus and Character of Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus reveals both&nbsp;<strong>boldness and broken-hearted compassion<\/strong>. He is unafraid to confront religious hypocrisy but is also deeply grieved by hard hearts. He does not avoid conflict\u2014He steps directly into it to defend what is good, right, and life-giving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-person-people-jesus-interacted-with\">Person\/People Jesus Interacted With<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A man with a\u00a0<strong>withered hand<\/strong>, silent and suffering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The Pharisees were<\/strong> watching to trap Jesus in legal violation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The crowd was<\/strong> witnessing this public showdown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened\">What Happened?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the synagogue, Jesus sees the man with the withered hand\u2014and also sees the&nbsp;<strong>traps being laid by the Pharisees<\/strong>. Instead of backing away, He brings the man front and center and poses a convicting question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cIs it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Their silence speaks volumes. Their&nbsp;<strong>rules matter more than people.<\/strong>&nbsp;Jesus becomes visibly angry and deeply grieved. Still, He commands the man:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>\u201cStretch out your hand.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As the man obeys, his hand is fully restored. But instead of celebrating the miracle, the Pharisees leave to&nbsp;<strong>plot Jesus\u2019 death.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mood-of-the-moment\">Mood of the Moment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Tense, dramatic, and emotionally charged. Jesus is angry, the Pharisees are cold, and the man is caught in the middle. Yet through it all, healing breaks in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-jesus-said\">What Jesus Said<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cGet up and come forward!\u201d<br>\u201cIs it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm\u2026?\u201d<br>\u201cStretch out your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jesus confronts injustice with conviction\u2014and compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-response-of-others\">Response of Others<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The\u00a0<strong>man<\/strong>\u00a0obeys and is healed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The\u00a0<strong>Pharisees<\/strong>\u00a0respond with hardened hearts and begin planning to destroy Him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The\u00a0<strong>Herodians<\/strong>, political collaborators, join forces with them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The\u00a0<strong>crowd<\/strong>\u00a0(implied) witnesses both the miracle and the hostility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lesson-for-us-in-2026\">Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Truth without love hardens; love without truth weakens<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Jesus walks in both.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Don\u2019t let religious systems blind you to human suffering<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Compassion is always lawful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Courage will cost you<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Doing what\u2019s right in a broken system may trigger resistance.
