Therefore, he includes this interaction because it introduces one of the most important themes in all of Scripture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God actively seeks the lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luke 15:1-2 NASB<br>Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him. Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, &#8220;This man receives sinners and eats with them.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus\u2019 Character<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>grace, compassion, and God\u2019s pursuit of people<\/strong>. Jesus reveals Himself as <strong>the one who welcomes those society rejects and pursues those who recognize their need for Him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The People in the Interaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 <strong>Jesus<\/strong>, welcoming and teaching<br>\u2022 <strong>Tax collectors<\/strong>, drawing near to listen<br>\u2022 <strong>Sinners<\/strong>, gathering around Him<br>\u2022 <strong>The Pharisees<\/strong>, criticizing His actions<br>\u2022 <strong>The scribes<\/strong>, joining in the complaint<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happened in the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Jesus continues teaching, two very different groups gather around Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, tax collectors and sinners draw near.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They want to hear what He has to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They recognize their need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they know they are broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, another group is watching as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pharisees and scribes begin grumbling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not upset that sinners are listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they are upset that Jesus welcomes them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more shocking to them, He eats with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the ancient world, sharing a meal communicated acceptance, relationship, and fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the religious leaders view Jesus\u2019 actions as inappropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus does not change course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He prepares to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that response becomes three of the most powerful parables He ever told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mood and Tone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>attraction \u2192 criticism \u2192 tension \u2192 revelation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And through that tension, the heart of God becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-did\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Jesus Did<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Welcomed people whom others rejected<br>\u2022 Allowed sinners to approach Him<br>\u2022 Refused to operate according to self-righteous expectations<br>\u2022 Prepared to reveal God\u2019s heart through parables<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-the-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Response of the Others<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-tax-collectors-and-sinners\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Tax Collectors and Sinners<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They moved toward Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they sought truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-pharisees-and-scribes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Pharisees and Scribes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They criticized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they questioned His associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in doing so, they exposed their own hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-jesus-moves-toward-broken-people\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Jesus Moves Toward Broken People<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not wait for people to become perfect before welcoming them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-self-righteousness-creates-distance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Self-Righteousness Creates Distance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people closest to religion were often furthest from God\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-grace-attracts-those-who-need-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Grace Attracts Those Who Need It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People who recognize their need often respond more readily than those who believe they need nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-god-s-heart-is-pursuit-not-avoidance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4.
