Therefore, he records the first major confrontation following the cleansing of the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has entered Jerusalem as King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has cleansed the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has publicly challenged corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now the religious leaders respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conflict that has been building throughout Luke\u2019s Gospel is about to intensify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the issue is not merely authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deeper issue is whether the leaders are willing to acknowledge who Jesus truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luke 20:1-8 NASB<br>On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, and they spoke, saying to Him, &#8220;Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?&#8221; Jesus answered and said to them, &#8220;I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?&#8221; They reasoned among themselves, saying, &#8220;If we say, &#8216;From heaven,&#8217; He will say, &#8216;Why did you not believe him?&#8217; But if we say, &#8216;From men,&#8217; all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.&#8221; So they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, &#8220;Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as&nbsp;<strong>the One whose authority comes directly from God and whose wisdom exposes dishonest motives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, He reveals that unbelief often persists not because of insufficient evidence, but because of unwillingness to surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The People in the Interaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong>, teaching in the temple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The chief priests<\/strong>, religious authorities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The scribes<\/strong>, experts in the Law<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The elders<\/strong>, influential leaders in class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief priests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the elders arrive together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These groups represent much of Israel&#8217;s religious leadership structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, they demand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question refers primarily to Jesus\u2019 recent actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has entered Jerusalem publicly as the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has cleansed the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He has taught openly in the temple courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From their perspective, Jesus is acting without official authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet their question reveals more than curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reveals resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they already possess substantial evidence regarding Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have witnessed miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have heard His teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they have seen lives transformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is not information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-authority\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Deep Theology of Authority<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authority becomes one of the central themes of Luke\u2019s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again and again, Jesus demonstrates authority over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Demons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Nature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Sin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Death<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Scripture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The temple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the religious leaders challenge the very source of that authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, their challenge reveals a fundamental difference between human authority and divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human authority is usually granted by institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Divine authority comes from God Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not receive His authority from the Sanhedrin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not receive it from Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not receive it from popular opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His authority came directly from the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is exactly what makes the leaders uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if Jesus truly possesses divine authority, then they are accountable to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-jesus-answers-with-a-question\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus Answers with a Question<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of answering directly, Jesus responds with a question of His own:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWas the baptism of John from heaven or from men?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this may seem unrelated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, it strikes at the heart of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because John the Baptist had already answered the question about Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John publicly declared that Jesus was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The Lamb of God<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Coming One<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Messiah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Son of God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the leaders acknowledge that John\u2019s ministry came from heaven, they must explain why they rejected his testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they deny John\u2019s ministry, they risk the anger of the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus places them in a position where their true motives become visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-leaders-reveal-their-hearts\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Leaders Reveal Their Hearts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke then allows readers to listen to their private reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what they discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is true?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat will happen if we answer this way?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth is no longer the primary concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequences are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reputation is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political calculation is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders are trapped because they are more interested in preserving influence than pursuing truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, they answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically, they provide an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practically, they refuse to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And their refusal reveals everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-danger-of-protecting-position\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Danger of Protecting Position<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction highlights one of the greatest spiritual dangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often resist truth when truth threatens something they value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the religious leaders, that something was authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acknowledging Jesus would require surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And surrender is often far more difficult than investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders possessed enough evidence to believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What they lacked was willingness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-jesus-refuses-to-answer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Jesus Refuses to Answer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then responds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not evasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why provide more information to people who refuse to respond to the information they already possess?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is not a lack of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is the rejection of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, God holds people accountable for the light they have received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders had received much light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet they continually resisted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-growing-pattern-in-luke\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Growing Pattern in Luke<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This moment fits a pattern Luke has highlighted repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blind man recognized Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zacchaeus welcomed Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children received Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples followed Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet many religious leaders rejected Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again and again, those expected to recognize the Messiah often miss Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, outsiders frequently see what insiders overlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke wants readers to understand that spiritual perception depends more on humility than on position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mood and Tone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from&nbsp;<strong>challenge \u2192 investigation \u2192 exposure \u2192 silence \u2192 judgment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And through every stage, Jesus demonstrates wisdom and authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"\">His authority comes from God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Unbelief is often a heart issue rather than an evidence issue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Truth requires a response<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Pride can create spiritual blindness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">God exposes hidden motives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Accountability increases with knowledge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr Crowd<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They continue listening to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He exposes the leaders\u2019 motives and reveals their unwillingness to embrace truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-truth-requires-more-than-investigation\"
