Therefore, after silencing every challenge from the religious leaders, Jesus turns His attention to His own disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public debates are over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the leaders have questioned Jesus\u2019 authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have attempted to trap Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have challenged His teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each attempt has failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus issues a warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is no longer speaking primarily to His opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is preparing His followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they are going to represent God\u2019s Kingdom, they must avoid becoming like the very leaders who have rejected Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luke 20:45-47 NASB<br>And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, &#8220;Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, who devour widows&#8217; houses, and for appearance&#8217;s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus\u2019 Character<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is on <strong>religious hypocrisy, pride, and authentic devotion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as <strong>the Good Shepherd who lovingly warns His followers against spiritual dangers that are often hidden beneath impressive appearances<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also reveals that God evaluates ministry differently than people do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity is often impressed by visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God is impressed by faithfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The People in the Interaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong>, warning His disciples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The disciples<\/strong>, receiving instruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The scribes<\/strong>, serving as a warning example<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The crowd<\/strong>, listening to Jesus\u2019 teaching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happened in the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the people continue listening, Jesus speaks directly to His disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeware of the scribes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not a condemnation of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor is it a rejection of studying Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes served an important purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They copied, interpreted, and taught God\u2019s Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many faithfully fulfilled that responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Jesus is exposing a pattern that had developed among many of the religious leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their ministry had become centered upon themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then describes several characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They enjoy walking in long robes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They love respectful greetings in public places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they seek the best seats in the synagogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They desire places of honor at banquets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outwardly, they appear deeply spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inwardly, something is profoundly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Jesus reveals the most disturbing accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They devour widows\u2019 houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While pretending to be exceptionally devout, they exploit the most vulnerable members of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Jesus says they offer long public prayers for appearance\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is sobering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They will receive greater condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-hypocrisy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Deep Theology of Hypocrisy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not condemning robes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or respected leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, God consistently distinguishes between outward behavior and inward devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes perform religious acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, those acts have become tools for personal advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religion becomes performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worship becomes reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership becomes influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tragedy is not merely that they deceive others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, they begin deceiving themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the greatest dangers of hypocrisy is that repeated performance can gradually replace genuine intimacy with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People begin living for appearances rather than transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-meaning-of-beware\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Meaning of \u201cBeware\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus chooses His words carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not simply say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDisagree with the scribes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeware.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word carries the idea of remaining continually alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because hypocrisy is contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It often develops gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very few people intentionally decide to become hypocrites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the process usually begins with small compromises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognition becomes more important than service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Influence becomes more important than faithfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reputation becomes more important than character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without realizing it, people begin serving themselves while claiming to serve God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus warns His disciples because every generation faces the same temptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-widows-matter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Widows Matter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the strongest statement in the passage is that the scribes \u201cdevour widows\u2019 houses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Widows were among the most vulnerable groups in ancient Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Old Testament, God repeatedly commands His people to protect widows, orphans, and foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, some religious leaders exploit them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast could not be greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those entrusted with caring for God\u2019s people use their position for personal gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This explains why Jesus announces greater condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greater knowledge produces greater responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who know God\u2019s truth while abusing God\u2019s people face a more serious judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-long-prayers-and-wrong-motives\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Long Prayers and Wrong Motives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus also mentions long prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice again that the problem is not length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, faithful servants sometimes pray at great length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus Himself spends entire nights in prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes pray:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor appearance\u2019s sake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prayer, which should express dependence upon God, becomes a performance for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This transforms one of the most intimate spiritual disciplines into an act of self-promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heart of worship is lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-sharp-contrast\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Sharp Contrast<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke intentionally places this warning immediately before the account of the widow\u2019s offering in chapter 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast is striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes take from widows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The widow gives to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes seek recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The widow remains unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scribes appear rich spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The widow appears poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus will reveal that she understands worship far better than they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke prepares readers for that contrast here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mood and Tone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>warning \u2192 exposure \u2192 sorrow \u2192 accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And through every stage, Jesus calls His followers toward authentic faithfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Jesus Reveals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">God examines motives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Religious appearance can conceal spiritual corruption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Leadership exists to serve, not to be served.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Exploiting vulnerable people is especially offensive to God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Greater knowledge brings greater accountability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Authentic devotion matters more than public recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-the-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Response of the Others<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-scribes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Disciples<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They receive a warning for their future ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-crowd\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Crowd<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They hear Jesus expose the difference between appearance and authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He lovingly protects His followers by exposing hidden dangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
