Therefore, after recording the preparation of the Passover, he now presents one of the most significant moments in all of redemptive history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For nearly fifteen centuries, Israel had celebrated the Passover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, the same meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same remembrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, in one evening, Jesus transforms them forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final Passover under the Old Covenant becomes the first meal of the New Covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything the Passover anticipated is now sitting at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luke 22:14-23 NASB<br>When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. And He said to them, &#8220;I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.&#8221; And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, &#8220;Take this and share it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.&#8221; And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, &#8220;This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.&#8221; And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, &#8220;This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!&#8221; And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus\u2019 Character<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the New Covenant, Christ\u2019s sacrificial death, and the fulfillment of the Passover<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as <strong>the true Passover Lamb who willingly gives His body and sheds His blood so that sinners may be forgiven and brought into a new covenant relationship with God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage stands at the center of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything before it points toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything after it flows from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The People in the Interaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong>, instituting the Lord\u2019s Supper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The Twelve Apostles<\/strong>, sharing the meal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Judas Iscariot<\/strong>, already committed to betrayal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>God the Father<\/strong>, establishing the New Covenant through His Son<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happened in the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As evening arrives, Jesus reclines at the table with His apostles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He begins by saying something deeply personal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These words reveal His heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus knows what is coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scourging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet before enduring those events, He longs to share this meal with His disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He tells them that He will not eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He takes a cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gives thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He tells the disciples to share it among themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, He takes bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After giving thanks, He breaks it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He says words that forever change history:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the meal, He takes another cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, He gives thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He declares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbols of the Passover receive new meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bread now points to His body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cup now points to His blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meal is no longer looking back merely to Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is now looking directly at the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Jesus announces that one of those sitting at the table will betray Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples are stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each begins wondering who it could possibly be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-passover-fulfilled\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Deep Theology of the Passover Fulfilled<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand this passage, we must return to Exodus 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the night of Israel\u2019s deliverance, every household sacrificed a spotless lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its blood was placed upon the doorposts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When judgment came, those covered by the blood were spared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries, Israel celebrated that deliverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet every Passover anticipated something greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John the Baptist had already declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBehold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the true Lamb sits at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within hours, His blood will accomplish what the blood of countless lambs never could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those sacrifices temporarily covered sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ\u2019s sacrifice removes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Exodus freed Israel from slavery in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross frees believers from slavery to sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old Passover becomes complete because the greater Passover has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-meaning-of-the-new-covenant\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Meaning of the New Covenant<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus\u2019 words about the New Covenant would have immediately reminded His disciples of the prophecy in Jeremiah 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, God promised a day when He would establish a covenant unlike the one made through Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Old Covenant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The Law was written on stone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Animal sacrifices were repeated continually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Priests served as mediators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the New Covenant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">God\u2019s law is written upon believing hearts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Christ offers one perfect sacrifice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jesus Himself becomes our eternal High Priest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Complete forgiveness becomes possible through His blood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This meal announces that Jeremiah\u2019s promise is now being fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-given-for-you\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cGiven for You\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One phrase deserves special attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy body\u2026 given for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross is not merely an example of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a substitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus gives Himself in the place of sinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, sacrifice involves substitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The innocent dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guilty live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Passover lamb dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel survives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus willingly becomes the substitute for humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross is personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gives Himself \u201cfor you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-do-this-in-remembrance-of-me\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cDo This in Remembrance of Me\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus institutes what Christians have celebrated for nearly two thousand years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lord\u2019s Supper is not merely a memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a proclamation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever believers gather around the bread and the cup, they remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Christ\u2019s sacrifice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">God\u2019s grace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The New Covenant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The forgiveness of sins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The certainty of Christ\u2019s return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communion continually points backward to the Cross and forward to the coming Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-judas-at-the-table\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Judas at the Table<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most sobering realities in this passage is that Judas remains present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The betrayer shares the meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He hears every word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He receives every invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet his heart has already turned away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reminds us that participation in religious ceremonies cannot replace genuine faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bread and cup point to salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only faith receives it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-sovereignty-of-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Sovereignty of God<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus also says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe Son of Man is going as it has been determined.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This brief statement holds two profound truths together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross unfolds according to God\u2019s eternal plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Judas remains responsible for his betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture consistently teaches both divine sovereignty and human responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father planned redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judas chose betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither truth cancels the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, together they magnify God\u2019s wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mood and Tone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>fellowship \u2192 gratitude \u2192 sacrifice \u2192 covenant \u2192 sorrow \u2192 anticipation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And through every stage, Jesus prepares His disciples to understand the meaning of His coming death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Jesus Reveals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">He is the true Passover Lamb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">His death establishes the New Covenant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">His sacrifice is substitutionary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Forgiveness comes through His blood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Communion points to both the Cross and the Kingdom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">God\u2019s redemptive plan is unfolding exactly as intended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-the-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Response of the Others<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-disciples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Disciples<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They receive the bread and the cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they begin questioning who the betrayer might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-judas\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Judas<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He remains outwardly present while inwardly committed to betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He willingly offers Himself for the salvation of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-christ-fulfilled-the-passover\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Christ Fulfilled the Passover<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Old Testament sacrifice pointed toward Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-salvation-comes-through-christ-alone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Salvation Comes Through Christ Alone<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His body was given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His blood was shed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no other sacrifice for sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-communion-calls-us-to-remember\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Communion Calls Us to Remember<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lord\u2019s Supper continually proclaims the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-outward-participation-is-not-enough\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Outward Participation Is Not Enough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True faith must accompany religious practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-god-s-grace-is-personal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. God\u2019s Grace Is Personal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus gave Himself \u201cfor you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every believer is invited to receive that gift by faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Reflection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Last Supper<\/strong> is one of the most beautiful moments in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A familiar Passover meal suddenly becomes something entirely new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bread no longer points merely to Israel\u2019s deliverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It points to Christ\u2019s body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cup no longer remembers only Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It proclaims the New Covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lamb is no longer simply remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lamb is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within hours, Jesus will accomplish what generations of sacrifices could never achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin will be judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Justice will be satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace will be offered freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And every future celebration of the Lord\u2019s Supper will remind believers that their hope rests not in their own goodness but in the finished work of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until He comes again, believers gather around the table to remember the Cross, proclaim the Gospel, and anticipate the coming Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
