Therefore, immediately after warning Peter of his coming denial, Luke records Jesus preparing the disciples for a dramatic change in their mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now, the disciples have ministered under Jesus\u2019 visible protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People welcomed Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowds followed Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miracles opened doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now everything is about to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shepherd will soon be arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross is only hours away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples must prepare for life after Jesus\u2019 ascension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their mission will continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the environment will be very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luke 22:35-38 NASB<br>And He said to them, &#8220;When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?&#8221; They said, &#8220;No, nothing.&#8221; And He said to them, &#8220;But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, &#8216;And HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS&#8217;; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.&#8221; They said, &#8220;Lord, look, here are two swords.&#8221; And He said to them, &#8220;It is enough.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus\u2019 Character<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>preparation for persecution, dependence upon God, and the fulfillment of prophecy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as <strong>the Good Shepherd who faithfully prepares His followers for hardship rather than allowing them to face it unexpectedly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never promises an easy road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He promises His presence and His provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The People in the Interaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong>, instructing His disciples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The Eleven Apostles<\/strong>, preparing for future ministry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The coming opposition<\/strong>, representing the hostile world they will soon encounter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happened in the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reminds His disciples of an earlier mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in His ministry, Jesus had sent them out with minimal provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God supplied everything they needed through the hospitality of receptive people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus tells them that circumstances are changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut now\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those two words introduce a significant transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He instructs them to take a money belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A travel bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He makes one of the most discussed statements in the Gospels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe one who has no sword is to sell his cloak and buy one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then explains why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He quotes Isaiah 53:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAnd He was numbered with transgressors.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He declares that this prophecy is about to be fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples misunderstand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They produce two swords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus simply replies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the conversation ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-transition\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Deep Theology of the Transition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage is often misunderstood because readers focus almost entirely on the swords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the primary emphasis is not on weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus contrasts two different seasons of ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-earlier-ministry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Earlier Ministry<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Jesus traveled publicly throughout Galilee and Judea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Many welcomed the disciples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Hospitality was common.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jesus\u2019 public popularity often provided protection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Their immediate needs were supplied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-coming-mission\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Coming Mission<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Jesus\u2019 death, resurrection, and ascension:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Opposition would increase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Persecution would spread.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Travel would become more difficult.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples would need practical preparation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission has not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The circumstances have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is preparing them to minister faithfully in a hostile world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-did-jesus-mean-by-the-sword\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Did Jesus Mean by the Sword?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage has generated centuries of discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several observations help us understand Jesus\u2019 meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, Jesus never encourages aggressive violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a few verses later, when Peter uses one of these very swords in the garden, Jesus immediately commands him to stop and heals the injured man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That event becomes the clearest commentary on this passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, Jesus often uses vivid language to emphasize preparedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His point is that the disciples should recognize how dramatically circumstances are about to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, when the disciples produce two swords, Jesus replies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If He intended to arm eleven men for armed conflict, two swords would obviously be insufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His response indicates that the disciples have misunderstood His larger point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emphasis is preparation\u2014not armed resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-numbered-with-the-transgressors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cNumbered with the Transgressors\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then quotes Isaiah 53:12:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was numbered with the transgressors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the clearest statements that connect His approaching arrest to the prophecy of the Suffering Servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus will soon be treated as a criminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although perfectly innocent, He will be arrested among criminals, tried like a criminal, and crucified alongside criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world will view Him as guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God will declare Him righteous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophecy is about to reach its fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-cost-of-following-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Cost of Following Christ<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus wants His disciples to understand that identifying with Him will soon carry a greater cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No longer will association with Jesus bring public admiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, it may bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Rejection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Arrest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Imprisonment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Suffering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Martyrdom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History confirms exactly what Jesus predicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the apostles would eventually suffer greatly for proclaiming the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet none of them would say Christ had abandoned them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Good Shepherd prepared them beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-god-s-provision-never-changes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>God\u2019s Provision Never Changes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although circumstances change, one thing remains constant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s faithfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins by reminding the disciples that they lacked nothing during their earlier mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That truth continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method of provision may differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The environment may become more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But God\u2019s care remains unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples are called to prepare wisely while trusting completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same balance characterizes faithful Christian living today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-preparation-without-fear\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Preparation Without Fear<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One beautiful aspect of this passage is Jesus\u2019 calmness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not create panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He creates readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He tells the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hardship is coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet His followers need not fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preparation born from faith differs greatly from anxiety born from uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus equips His disciples because He loves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mood and Tone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>reflection \u2192 preparation \u2192 warning \u2192 prophecy \u2192 readiness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And through every stage, Jesus lovingly prepares His followers for faithful endurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Jesus Reveals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Following Him will involve increasing opposition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">God prepares His people before trials arrive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Scripture is being fulfilled perfectly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Wisdom includes practical preparation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">God\u2019s provision remains dependable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Christ remains in complete control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-the-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Response of the Others<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-disciples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Disciples<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They remember God\u2019s past provision but misunderstand part of Jesus\u2019 instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He patiently prepares them for the coming season of ministry and suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lesson for Us in Following Christ Often Involves Opposition<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faithfulness does not guarantee comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-god-prepares-his-people-in-advance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.
