every believer.

Consider the exchange.

Barabbas is guilty.

Jesus is innocent.

Barabbas deserves punishment.

Jesus deserves honor.

Yet Barabbas walks free.

Jesus takes his place.

This is substitution.

The guilty receive freedom.

The innocent bear condemnation.

Everything that happens to Barabbas physically illustrates what happens spiritually to every person who trusts in Christ.

We are Barabbas.

We deserve judgment.

Jesus receives our sentence.

We receive His id="h-the-innocence-of-christ-declared-again" class="wp-block-heading">The Innocence of Christ Declared Again

Luke intentionally repeats Pilate’s verdict three times.

Three separate declarations of innocence.

This repetition is not accidental.

Throughout the Passion narrative, witness after witness confirms that Jesus is without sin.

The Old Testament required every sacrificial lamb to be spotless.

Luke is demonstrating that Jesus perfectly fulfills that requirement.

He is the Lamb without defect.

Only such a sacrifice can atone for the sins of others.

The crowd chooses Barabbas.

Why?

In one sense, Barabbas represented the kind of messiah many desired.

He opposed Rome through violence.

Jesus opposed sin through sacrifice.

One offered a revolution.

The other offered redemption.

The crowd preferred immediate political victory over eternal spiritual salvation.

This remains a temptation today.

People often seek a Savior who fulfills their immediate expectations rather than the One God has actually provided.

Pilate’s Failure

Pilate recognizes the truth.

His greatest failure is not ignorance.

It is a compromise.

He chooses political peace over justice.

Public approval over moral conviction.

Pilate reminds every generation that recognizing truth is not enough.

Truth demands obedience.

Knowing what is right while refusing to do it remains a tragic alive because Jesus walks toward the Cross.

That exchange lies at the very heart of Christianity.

Without
