Therefore, after Pilate sentences Jesus to death, Luke follows Him on the long walk to the place of crucifixion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trial is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sentence has been pronounced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the execution begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The road leading to Golgotha is often called the <strong>Via Dolorosa<\/strong>, the \u201cWay of Suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along that road, Luke records two remarkable encounters found together only in his Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One involves a man unexpectedly carrying a cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other involves grieving women receiving a solemn warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both reveal that even as He walks toward His own death, Jesus continues to think about others rather than Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luke 23:26-31 NASB<br>When they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus. And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were mourning and lamenting Him. But Jesus turning to them said, &#8220;Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, &#8216;Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.&#8217; Then they will begin TO say TO THE MOUNTAINS, &#8216;FALL ON US,&#8217; AND TO THE HILLS, &#8216;COVER US.&#8217; For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is yourselves and for your children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He then speaks of coming days when people will consider childlessness a blessing rather than a sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He declares that people will cry out for the mountains to fall upon them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Jesus asks a striking class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, he becomes forever connected with the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke says Simon carries the cross <strong>behind Jesus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That wording should immediately remind readers of Jesus\u2019 earlier teaching:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simon likely had no choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet God\u2019s providence often works through circumstances that appear entirely ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simon may have considered this the worst interruption of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, it became the greatest privilege imaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How often does God work the same way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unexpected interruptions become divine appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moments we would never choose become moments that shape eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-jesus-compassion-for-the-women\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus\u2019 Compassion for the Women<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the passage is that Jesus stops to address the women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider His condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has been beaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scourged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet He comforts others rather than seeking comfort Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This perfectly reflects His character throughout Luke\u2019s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even while suffering, His concern remains focused outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His compassion is not diminished by His own pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-weep-for-yourselves\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cWeep for Yourselves\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells the women not to weep primarily for Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because His suffering, though terrible, serves God\u2019s redemptive purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far greater judgment awaits Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within one generation, Roman armies will destroy the city in AD 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus again points beyond His own immediate suffering toward the coming consequences of Israel\u2019s rejection of the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The women&#8217;s tears are sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus redirects them toward a deeper spiritual reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest tragedy is not that the innocent Messiah suffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest tragedy is rejecting Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-green-tree-and-the-dry-tree\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Green Tree and the Dry Tree<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes with a proverb:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement has challenged interpreters for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The green tree most naturally represents Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Righteous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If such terrible injustice can happen to the innocent Son of God, what will happen when judgment falls upon those who remain spiritually dry through unbelief?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warning is sobering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s judgment upon sin is certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross demonstrates both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God\u2019s mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-cost-of-discipleship\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Cost of Discipleship<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke intentionally places Simon\u2019s cross-bearing beside Jesus\u2019 earlier teaching about following Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipleship is never presented as a life of class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Simon\u2019s story reminds us that walking behind Jesus\u2014even beneath a cross\u2014is ultimately the safest place a person can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
