{"id":4007,"date":"2026-07-29T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4007"},"modified":"2026-07-19T18:04:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T22:04:16","slug":"introduction-to-the-gospel-of-john","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/introduction-to-the-gospel-of-john\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to the Gospel of John: That You May Believe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-why-another-gospel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Another Gospel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After reading Matthew, Mark, and Luke, an obvious question arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why did God inspire a fourth Gospel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hadn&#8217;t Jesus&#8217; life already been recorded?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John himself answers this question near the end of his book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;(John 20:30\u201331, NASB)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is John&#8217;s purpose statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike modern biographies that attempt to record every detail of a person&#8217;s life, the Gospels are theological history. They recount true events, but with a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the promised King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark presents Him as the suffering Servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke reveals Him as the perfect Savior for all humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes to answer one supreme question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who is Jesus Christ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything in his Gospel serves that purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-author\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Author<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the Gospel never names its author directly, the testimony of the early church is remarkably consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was written by&nbsp;<strong>John the Apostle<\/strong>, the son of Zebedee and brother of James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John belonged to Jesus&#8217; inner circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Peter, James, and John witnessed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The raising of Jairus&#8217; daughter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Transfiguration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jesus&#8217; agony in Gethsemane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John also identifies himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;The disciple whom Jesus loved.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not arrogance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John never exalts himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he identifies himself primarily by Christ&#8217;s love rather than his own accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is the greatest identity any believer can possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-when-was-john-written\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Was John Written?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most scholars place the Gospel between\u00a0<strong>AD 85 and 95<\/strong>, making it the last of the four Gospels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By this time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Jerusalem had been destroyed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Church had spread throughout the Roman Empire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">False teaching concerning Jesus had already begun to appear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes as an aging apostle who has spent decades reflecting upon everything he witnessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His Gospel possesses remarkable depth because it combines eyewitness memory with years of theological reflection under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-john-s-unique-style\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">John&#8217;s Unique Style<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly ninety percent of John&#8217;s material appears nowhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He omits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Jesus&#8217; birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The genealogy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Most parables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The temptation in the wilderness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Transfiguration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The institution of the Lord&#8217;s Supper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, John includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The wedding at Cana.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Nicodemus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Samaritan woman.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The man born blind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Lazarus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Upper Room discourse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The High Priestly Prayer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because every event John selects reveals another aspect of Jesus&#8217; identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is not merely collecting stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is building a theological case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-seven-signs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Seven Signs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John structures much of his Gospel around miraculous signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each sign reveals something about Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Water into wine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Healing the official&#8217;s son.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Healing the lame man.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Feeding the five thousand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Walking on water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Healing the man born blind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Raising Lazarus.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not simply miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John deliberately calls them&nbsp;<strong>signs<\/strong>&nbsp;because they point beyond themselves to reveal who Jesus truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-seven-i-am-statements\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Seven &#8220;I AM&#8221; Statements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another major theme is Jesus&#8217; repeated use of the divine name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus declares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">I am the Bread of Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the Light of the World.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the Door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the Good Shepherd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the Resurrection and the Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the True Vine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These statements intentionally echo God&#8217;s self-revelation to Moses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I AM WHO I AM.&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;(Exodus 3:14)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants readers to recognize that Jesus is not merely sent by God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He shares the very identity of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-light-and-darkness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light and Darkness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of John&#8217;s favorite themes is the contrast between light and darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Truth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Revelation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Holiness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darkness represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Sin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Ignorance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Rebellion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Gospel, people continually choose one or the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reminds us that every person ultimately responds to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neutrality is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-belief\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No word appears more frequently in John than&nbsp;<strong>believe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, John almost never uses the noun &#8220;faith.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he consistently uses the verb &#8220;believe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith is not merely something we possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is something we continually exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believing means trusting, relying upon, and entrusting ourselves to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For John, belief is active rather than merely intellectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deity-of-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deity of Christ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No Gospel presents the deity of Jesus more clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not begin in Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He begins before creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Adam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And before Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before time itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His opening words transport readers into eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One lying in a manger is the eternal Creator of the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything that follows depends upon that truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-john-matters-today\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why John Matters Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern culture often admires Jesus as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">a teacher,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">a moral example,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">a prophet,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">a revolutionary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John allows no such reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be&#8230; or Christianity collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John presses every reader toward a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He refuses to leave us neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone is one of&nbsp;<strong>wonder, worship, revelation, and invitation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes with the heart of a pastor, the precision of an eyewitness, and the theological depth of someone who has spent a lifetime contemplating the glory of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-john-reveals-about-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What John Reveals About Jesus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the Gospel even begins, John prepares us to meet Jesus as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The eternal Son of God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Creator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The promised Messiah.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Light of the World.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Lamb of God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Giver of eternal life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Great &#8220;I AM.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before asking what Jesus can do for us, John asks a more fundamental question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who do we believe Jesus is?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every other question depends upon that answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Jesus is merely a remarkable teacher, then His words deserve admiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If He is the eternal Son of God, then His words demand worship and obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John leaves no middle ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel of John is an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely to learn about Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But to know Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes as an old man who had walked beside Christ, leaned against His chest at the Last Supper, stood at the foot of the Cross, looked into the empty tomb, and watched the risen Lord restore broken disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decades later, one truth still burns in his heart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus is the Son of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything John records serves that one magnificent reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we begin this Gospel together, we are not merely starting another biography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are entering one of the deepest theological books ever written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And every sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every page invites us to see the glory of Christ more clearly than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As I begin John&#8217;s Gospel, am I approaching it merely to gain more biblical knowledge\u2014or am I prepared to encounter the eternal Son of God, believe more deeply in Him, and allow that belief to transform every area of my life?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-suggested-reading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suggested Reading:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-stand-firm wp-block-embed-stand-firm\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"EE3k6RTOCB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/whose-son-is-the-christ-luke-20-41-44\/\">Whose Son Is the Christ?
