{"id":4010,"date":"2026-07-30T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4010"},"modified":"2026-07-19T19:51:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T23:51:30","slug":"the-eternal-word-john-1-1-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-eternal-word-john-1-1-5\/","title":{"rendered":"The Eternal Word: Before Time Began (John 1:1\u20135)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has already told us why he wrote his Gospel: in these opening verses, we encounter John 1:1\u20135 The Eternal Word, where we find profound insight into the nature of Jesus and His divinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;These have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.&#8221; (John 20:31)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before John introduces John the Baptist&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before he records a single miracle&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before he tells us about Bethlehem, Cana, or the Cross&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He takes us somewhere no other Gospel does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He takes us into eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew begins with Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke begins with the birth of John the Baptist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark begins with John the Baptist&#8217;s ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John begins&nbsp;<strong>before Genesis 1:1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His opening words deliberately echo the first words of Scripture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;In the beginning&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to understand something essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not begin at Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had no beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 1:1-5 NASB<br>In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is&nbsp;<strong>the eternal deity of Jesus Christ, His role in creation, His relationship within the Trinity, and His victory over darkness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the eternal Word<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Creator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the source of all life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Light of humanity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and God Himself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These verses are among the clearest declarations of Christ&#8217;s deity in the entire Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else John writes depends upon these opening truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-passage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Passage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every phrase deserves careful attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-in-the-beginning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;In the Beginning&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally echoes Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But notice the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;In the beginning God created&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;In the beginning&nbsp;was&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis describes the beginning of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John describes what already existed before creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When time began&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word already was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John deliberately uses the imperfect tense (&#8220;was&#8221;) three times in verse one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In the beginning the Word became.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor does he write: &#8220;The Word came into existence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead: <strong>The Word already existed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is foundational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else in creation&nbsp;<strong>came into being<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word simply&nbsp;<strong>was<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is describing eternal existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only God possesses that attribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-the-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why &#8220;The Word&#8221;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John calls Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Word<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek word is&nbsp;<strong>Logos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not simply say: &#8220;In the beginning was Jesus&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because John introduces readers to the eternal Son before His earthly name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The title &#8220;Word&#8221; carries profound meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-for-jewish-readers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Jewish Readers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Old Testament, God creates, reveals Himself, judges, saves, and covenants&nbsp;<strong>through His Word<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Then God said&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psalm 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;By the word of the LORD the heavens were made.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah 55.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>God&#8217;s Word accomplishes exactly what He intends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To Jewish readers, God&#8217;s Word represents His powerful self-revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That Word is a Person.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-for-greek-readers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Greek Readers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greeks often used&nbsp;<strong>Logos<\/strong>&nbsp;to describe the rational principle ordering the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some philosophers viewed the Logos as an impersonal force governing reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John radically transforms the concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Logos is not an abstract principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Logos is a living Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But God Himself entered history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John masterfully speaks to both audiences without compromising biblical truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-word-was-with-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The Word Was With God&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phrase literally carries the idea of <strong>face-to-face with God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is intimate fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfect communion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John introduces both distinction and unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is not identical to the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is&nbsp;<strong>with<\/strong>&nbsp;the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, the doctrine of the Trinity begins to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet more than one divine Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not explain the Trinity philosophically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply describes what is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-word-was-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The Word Was God&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps no sentence in Scripture has generated more theological discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John could not have stated Christ&#8217;s deity more clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what he does&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not say: &#8220;The Word was&nbsp;<strong>a<\/strong>&nbsp;god.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor does he say: &#8220;The Word was like God.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor: &#8220;The Word became God.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply declares: <strong>The Word was God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek grammar is precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By placing &#8220;God&#8221; before the verb, John emphasizes the nature of the Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is not saying the Father and the Word are the same Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is saying the Word fully possesses the very nature and essence of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction protects two foundational truths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Jesus is distinct from the Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jesus is fully God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both truths remain essential to orthodox Christianity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-answering-a-common-misunderstanding\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Answering a Common Misunderstanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some groups have translated this verse: &#8220;The Word was&nbsp;<strong>a god<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this translation does not fit either the passage&#8217;s grammar or John&#8217;s theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus receives worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus forgives sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Jesus bears the divine name &#8220;I AM.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus exercises authority belonging only to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas eventually worships Him, declaring: <strong>&#8220;My Lord and my God!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s opening statement prepares us for that confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel never presents Jesus as&nbsp;<em>a<\/em>&nbsp;lesser deity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It presents Him as the eternal Son who shares fully in the divine nature while remaining personally distinct from the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-verse-two-removes-all-doubt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Verse Two Removes All Doubt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John immediately repeats himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;He was in the beginning with God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why repeat it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because repetition emphasizes certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants no misunderstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything said in verse one remains true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before anything existed&#8230; Christ already existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-christ-the-creator\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Christ the Creator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse three declares: <strong>&#8220;All things came into being through Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the universality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>All things.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then John adds the negative statement: <strong>&#8220;Apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why both statements?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To eliminate every exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything that exists belongs in one of two categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Creator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Created.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John leaves Jesus only one category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Jesus created everything that came into existence&#8230; He Himself cannot belong to the category of created things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This completely rules out the idea that Jesus was merely God&#8217;s first creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He is the eternal Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul echoes this truth in Colossians 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The author of Hebrews echoes it as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New Testament consistently attributes creation to the Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John introduces another major theme: &#8220;In Him was life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not merely possess life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&nbsp;<strong>is<\/strong>&nbsp;its source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physical life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritual life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every form of true life flows from Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel, Jesus repeatedly says: &#8220;I am the life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raising of Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bread of Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every one of these teachings grows from this opening statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-light\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John then writes: <strong>&#8220;The life was the Light of men.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the first chapter to the last, light and darkness become one of John&#8217;s dominant themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">truth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">holiness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">revelation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">salvation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">God&#8217;s presence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darkness represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">sin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">ignorance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">rebellion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not merely an intellectual contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a moral one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity naturally prefers darkness because darkness hides sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ comes as Light, exposing reality and offering life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-darkness-did-not-comprehend-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The Darkness Did Not Comprehend It&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse five concludes: <strong>&#8220;The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final Greek verb is wonderfully rich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">overcome<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">overpower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">seize<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">comprehend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally allows both ideas to resonate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darkness neither:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">understood Christ<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">nor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">defeated Christ<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Gospel, darkness repeatedly attempts to extinguish the Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pharisees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sanhedrin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pilate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every attempt fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Resurrection forever proves: Darkness cannot overcome the Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-trinity-in-john-s-opening\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Trinity in John&#8217;s Opening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without using the word &#8220;Trinity,&#8221; John provides one of Scripture&#8217;s clearest foundations for the doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We learn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father is God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, John introduces the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church did not invent the Trinity centuries later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply summarized what passages like John 1 already reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three distinct Persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfect unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfect equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perfect eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-john-begins-here\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why John Begins Here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John knows readers cannot properly understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the Cross&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the miracles&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the Resurrection&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or salvation&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until they first understand&nbsp;<strong>who Jesus is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If Jesus were merely another prophet&#8230; His death could never save us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If He were merely an angel&#8230; His sacrifice could never redeem the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only because the One on the Cross is the eternal Creator can His sacrifice possess infinite value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel begins with Christ&#8217;s identity because everything else depends upon it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from&nbsp;<strong>eternity \u2192 creation \u2192 life \u2192 light \u2192 triumph<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not merely introduce Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He introduces the One who stands outside time, speaks the universe into existence, gives life to all creation, and cannot be overcome by darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The eternal Word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Fully God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Distinct from the Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Creator of all things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Source of all life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Light of humanity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Victor over darkness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-jesus-is-not-simply-part-of-history\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Jesus Is Not Simply Part of History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is the Author of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-everything-exists-because-of-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Everything Exists Because of Christ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our lives find meaning only in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-true-life-is-found-only-in-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. True Life Is Found Only in Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not merely improve life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gives it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-darkness-never-has-the-final-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Darkness Never Has the Final Word<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter how powerful evil appears, Christ remains victorious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-our-view-of-jesus-shapes-everything-else\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
