In John 1:6\u201313, the True Light is described as coming into the world and being witnessed by John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surprisingly, it is not Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is&nbsp;<strong>John the Baptist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this seems like an interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why pause such a majestic introduction to speak about another man?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because God has always chosen to use human witnesses to proclaim His divine message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s Gospel is not only about&nbsp;<strong>who Christ is<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also about&nbsp;<strong>how people come to know Him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God sends witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People must decide how they will respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 1:6-13 NASB<br>There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is&nbsp;<strong>the testimony of John the Baptist, the revelation of Christ as the True Light, humanity&#8217;s response to that Light, and the miracle of becoming God&#8217;s children through faith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the True Light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Creator entering His own creation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the rejected Messiah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the One who grants new birth to all who believe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage shifts the question from&nbsp;<strong>Who is Jesus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How will we respond to Him?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-passage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Passage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately, the contrast is striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In verses 1\u20135, John speaks of eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now he speaks of&nbsp;<strong>a man<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eternal Word has no beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John the Baptist does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Creator sends a creature to prepare the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-man-sent-from-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Man Sent from God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John the Baptist did not appoint himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was&nbsp;<strong>sent from God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, genuine ministry always begins with God&#8217;s calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophets were sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apostles were sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, Jesus Himself was sent by the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authority of God&#8217;s servants is never rooted in personal charisma, education, or popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is rooted in the One who sends them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s authority came from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet his greatness was never found in himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was found in the One to whom he pointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-witness-not-the-light\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Witness, Not the Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John repeatedly emphasizes something that seems almost unnecessary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;He was not the Light.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why say this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because people were tempted to elevate John beyond his proper role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later in this Gospel, we learn that many admired him deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some even wondered if he was the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John refuses every opportunity for personal glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He understands the difference between&nbsp;<strong>the Light<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>a witness to the Light<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moon has no light of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reflects sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church occupies a similar role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not generate spiritual light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We reflect the Light of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healthiest ministries never make people dependent upon the messenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They continually direct attention to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-purpose-of-witness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Purpose of Witness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John tells us why John the Baptist came:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;So that all might believe through him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the wording carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People do not believe&nbsp;<strong>in<\/strong>&nbsp;John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They believe&nbsp;<strong>through<\/strong>&nbsp;John&#8217;s testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Witnesses never become the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply point toward the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This remains the calling of every believer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot save anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot change hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we can faithfully testify to the One who does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-true-light\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The True Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now introduces one of the richest titles for Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word\u00a0<strong>true<\/strong>\u00a0does not mean that the previous light was false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, it means&nbsp;<strong>ultimate<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>complete<\/strong>, or&nbsp;<strong>perfect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Old Testament contained light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophets reflected light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John the Baptist reflected light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus is the source from which every other light derives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every revelation before Him pointed toward Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every revelation after Him depends upon Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-it-mean-that-christ-enlightens-every-man\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does It Mean That Christ &#8220;Enlightens Every Man&#8221;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement has often been misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is not teaching that every person is automatically saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor is he saying every person receives equal spiritual understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Christ is the universal revelation of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every human being ultimately encounters the light of God&#8217;s self-disclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some encounter Him through creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some through conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And some through Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some through the preaching of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one remains entirely untouched by God&#8217;s revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is never whether God has revealed Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is how people respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-great-tragedy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Great Tragedy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verses 10 and 11 may be among the saddest in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;He was in the world&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine that sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Creator entered His own creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Author stepped into His own story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The King walked among His own subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet John continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;The world did not know Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creation failed to recognize its Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then John narrows the focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Prophets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the promises<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the covenants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the temple<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the sacrifices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries, God had prepared them for the coming Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet when He arrived, many rejected Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not merely Israel&#8217;s tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is humanity&#8217;s tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin blinds us to the glory standing before us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-miracle-of-receiving-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Miracle of Receiving Christ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then everything changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John introduces one of the most hope-filled verses in the New Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;But as many as received Him&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those four words open the door of salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rejection of many does not prevent the invitation extended to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that John connects receiving Christ with believing in His name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biblical faith is not mere intellectual agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is welcoming Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trusting Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Submitting to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entrusting oneself completely to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith is relational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is receiving the Person of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-right-to-become-children-of-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Right to Become Children of God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John makes an astonishing statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who receive Christ are given:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;the right to become children of God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the Bible&#8217;s greatest privileges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every human being is God&#8217;s creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every human being is God&#8217;s child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reserves that title for those who believe in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adoption is not automatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is graciously given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This language echoes the legal world of the first century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adoption bestowed a new family, a new inheritance, a new identity, and full legal standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritually, God does even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He welcomes sinners into His own household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are no longer merely forgiven criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We become beloved sons and daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-born-of-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Born&#8230; of God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John concludes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here John quietly introduces another major theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our relationship with God is not inherited biologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not earned through effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not granted by human authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it is entirely the work of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This prepares us for Jesus&#8217; conversation with Nicodemus in John 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long before Jesus tells Nicodemus that he &#8220;must be born again,&#8221; John has already introduced the doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salvation begins with God&#8217;s gracious initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-witness-before-wonder\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Witness Before Wonder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is significant that John speaks of witness before miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout this Gospel, miracles alone never produce lasting faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many saw miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few truly believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith comes through God&#8217;s revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miracles confirm the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They never replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God&#8217;s ordinary method has always been faithful testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That remains true today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-light-still-shines\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Light Still Shines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that the Light continues shining despite rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human unbelief never diminishes Christ&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The darkness does not extinguish the Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rejection of many magnifies the grace shown to those who believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The invitation remains open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Light still shines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Our Greatest Identity Is Being God&#8217;s Children<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No earthly accomplishment surpasses belonging to God&#8217;s family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-new-birth-is-god-s-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
