{"id":4031,"date":"2026-08-01T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4031"},"modified":"2026-07-30T19:07:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T23:07:55","slug":"the-word-became-flesh-john-1-14-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-word-became-flesh-john-1-14-18\/","title":{"rendered":"The Word Became Flesh: The Glory of the Incarnation (John 1:14\u201318)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For thirteen verses, John has steadily built toward one breathtaking declaration. <ins class=\"yst-diff\">In John 1:14\u201318 The Word Became Flesh, we encounter the profound mystery of Christ becoming human and living among us.<\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has shown us that the Word is eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Word created everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word is light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Word entered the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world rejected Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believers received Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now John reveals&nbsp;<strong>how<\/strong>&nbsp;the eternal Word entered history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one sentence that has shaped Christian theology for two thousand years, he writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;And the Word became flesh&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not simply the story of Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the mystery of the Incarnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The infinite became finite without ceasing to be infinite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Creator entered creation without surrendering His deity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One who upholds the universe became an infant who had to be held by His mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No human mind can fully comprehend this mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can only worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 1:14-18 NASB<br>And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified about Him and cried out, saying, &#8220;This was He of whom I said, &#8216;He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'&#8221; For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is&nbsp;<strong>the Incarnation of the Son of God, the revelation of God&#8217;s glory, the fullness of grace and truth, and Jesus as the perfect revelation of the Father<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the eternal Word made flesh,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">God&#8217;s dwelling place among humanity,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the glory of the Father,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the source of grace and truth,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the One who makes the invisible God known.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything that follows in John&#8217;s Gospel flows from these truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-word-became-flesh\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Word Became Flesh<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John could have written:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Word became a man.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he deliberately chooses the stronger word: <strong>&#8220;The Word became flesh.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because &#8220;flesh&#8221; emphasizes genuine humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is confronting every attempt to diminish Christ&#8217;s humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not merely appear human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not temporarily wear a human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He truly became man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He experienced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">hunger,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">fatigue,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">sorrow,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">temptation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">pain,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">tears,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet without sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Incarnation means that the Son assumed a complete human nature while remaining fully divine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not stop being God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added humanity to His deity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church later summarized this biblical truth by confessing that Christ is&nbsp;<strong>fully God and fully man<\/strong>, two natures united in one Person without confusion, division, change, or separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not explain the mechanics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply proclaims the reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-dwelt-among-us\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Dwelt Among Us&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John continues: <strong>&#8220;and dwelt among us.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek verb literally means: <strong>&#8220;pitched His tent&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>&#8220;tabernacled.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a deliberate echo of the Old Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Israel&#8217;s deliverance from Egypt, God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, God&#8217;s glory dwelt among His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tabernacle was the place where heaven and earth met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now declares that Jesus is the true Tabernacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God no longer dwells primarily in a tent of animal skins or in a temple of stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He dwells in the Person of His Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tabernacle pointed forward to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Temple pointed forward to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything finds its fulfillment in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people looked at Jesus, they were seeing God&#8217;s presence dwelling among humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-we-saw-his-glory\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;We Saw His Glory&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John speaks as an eyewitness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;We saw His glory.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What glory did John have in mind?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certainly he remembered the Transfiguration, when Jesus&#8217; divine majesty shone through His humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But John&#8217;s Gospel reveals Christ&#8217;s glory in ways that are often unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His glory is seen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">when He turns water into wine,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">when He washes His disciples&#8217; feet,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">when He raises Lazarus,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and supremely when He is lifted up on the Cross.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John repeatedly presents the Cross not merely as suffering but as glorification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world sees humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John sees glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because nowhere are God&#8217;s holiness, justice, mercy, and love displayed more perfectly than at Calvary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-only-begotten-from-the-father\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The Only Begotten from the Father&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John calls Jesus: <strong>&#8220;the only begotten from the Father.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek term (<em>monogen\u0113s<\/em>) has sometimes been misunderstood to mean that Jesus was created or came into existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not John&#8217;s meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier he has already declared that the Word eternally existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the emphasis is on Christ&#8217;s unique relationship with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is the Father&#8217;s one-of-a-kind Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one shares His identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believers become sons and daughters through adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is the Son by nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our sonship is graciously given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His Sonship is eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-full-of-grace-and-truth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Full of Grace and Truth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John summarizes Christ&#8217;s character with two beautiful words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grace.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These should never be separated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace without truth becomes sentimental indulgence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth without grace becomes crushing legalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus perfectly embodies both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never compromises holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never withholds mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Jesus confronted sinners, He spoke the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When He spoke the truth, He did so with grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This balance explains why people who hated His message were still drawn to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He exposed sin without delighting in condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He offered forgiveness without minimizing righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Christ, justice and mercy meet perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-grace-upon-grace\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grace Upon Grace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse 16 declares: <strong>&#8220;For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John pictures God&#8217;s grace as wave after wave rolling onto the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wave arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another immediately follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God&#8217;s grace is not exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is continual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daily grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saving grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanctifying grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sustaining grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comforting grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every spiritual blessing flows from Christ&#8217;s inexhaustible fullness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believers never draw from an empty well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-moses-and-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moses and Jesus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes: <strong>&#8220;For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is not criticizing Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Law was God&#8217;s gracious gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It revealed His holiness and exposed humanity&#8217;s need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Law could diagnose sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could not remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sacrifices pointed toward forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They could not permanently accomplish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not abolish the Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He fulfills it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything Moses anticipated reaches its completion in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shadows give way to the substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promise gives way to fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-invisible-god-made-visible\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Invisible God Made Visible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John concludes: <strong>&#8220;No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most astonishing claims in Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not merely teach about God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He reveals Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek word translated &#8220;explained&#8221;
