{"id":4039,"date":"2026-08-03T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4039"},"modified":"2026-08-01T12:23:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T16:23:58","slug":"jesus-calls-his-first-disciples-john-1-35-51","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/jesus-calls-his-first-disciples-john-1-35-51\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Calls His First Disciples: Come, and You Will See (John 1:35\u201351)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has established who Jesus is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The eternal Word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Creator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Light of the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Lamb of God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Son of God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now John begins answering another important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How does someone become a follower of Jesus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is surprisingly personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no large crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No dramatic sermon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No public miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, one person tells another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conversation begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone follows Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they invite someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reminds us that the Kingdom of God often advances one relationship at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first disciples are not won through spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are won through personal encounters with Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 1:35-51 NASB<br>Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, &#8220;Behold, the Lamb of God!&#8221; The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, &#8220;What do you seek?&#8221; They said to Him, &#8220;Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?&#8221; He said to them, &#8220;Come, and you will see.&#8221; So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter&#8217;s brother. He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, &#8220;We have found the Messiah&#8221; (which translated means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, &#8220;You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas&#8221; (which is translated Peter). The next day He purposed to go into Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, &#8220;Follow Me.&#8221; Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, &#8220;We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.&#8221; Nathanael said to him, &#8220;Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?&#8221; Philip said to him, &#8220;Come and see.&#8221; Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, &#8220;Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!&#8221; Nathanael said to Him, &#8220;How do You know me?&#8221; Jesus answered and said to him, &#8220;Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.&#8221; Nathanael answered Him, &#8220;Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.&#8221; Jesus answered and said to him, &#8220;Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.&#8221; And He *said to him, &#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the call to discipleship, the transforming power of a personal encounter with Jesus, and Christ&#8217;s supernatural knowledge of those He calls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Rabbi worth following,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Messiah,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the King of Israel,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Son of God,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Son of Man who unites heaven and earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage introduces the lifelong pattern of Christian discipleship:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Come.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>See.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Follow.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bring others.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interaction includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>John the Baptist<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Andrew<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Simon Peter<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Philip<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Nathanael<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day after identifying Jesus as the Lamb of God, John the Baptist again sees Him walking nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once more he declares: <strong>&#8220;Behold, the Lamb of God!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, two of John&#8217;s own disciples hear him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately they leave John and begin following Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus turns and asks His first recorded words in John&#8217;s Gospel: <strong>&#8220;What are you seeking?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than answering directly, they ask where He is staying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus simply replies: <strong>&#8220;Come, and you will see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They spend the remainder of the day with Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those disciples is Andrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing Andrew does afterward is find his brother Simon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He joyfully announces: <strong>&#8220;We have found the Messiah.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew brings Simon to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus immediately gives Simon a new name: <strong>Cephas<\/strong> (Peter), meaning &#8220;rock.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day Jesus finds Philip and simply says: <strong>&#8220;Follow Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip then finds Nathanael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathanael is skeptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip does not argue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply says: <strong>&#8220;Come and see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Nathanael approaches, Jesus declares: <strong>&#8220;Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surprised, Nathanael asks how Jesus knows him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus replies: <strong>&#8220;Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever happened beneath that fig tree, Nathanael immediately realizes he is standing before someone possessing divine knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He responds with one of the earliest confessions in John&#8217;s Gospel: <strong>&#8220;Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus promises Nathanael something even greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-are-you-seeking\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;What Are You Seeking?&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus&#8217; first words in John&#8217;s Gospel are not accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not ask: &#8220;What do you know?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor, &#8220;What have you accomplished?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks: <strong>&#8220;What are you seeking?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question reaches beyond Andrew and the unnamed disciple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reaches every reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every person seeks something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins discipleship by exposing the deepest desires of the human heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not whether we are seeking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is whether we are seeking the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-come-and-see\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Come and See&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than delivering a theological lecture, Jesus extends an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Come and see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christianity begins with relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctrine matters profoundly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But doctrine grows from knowing Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not merely provide information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He invites people into His presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice how this phrase spreads throughout the passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says, <strong>&#8220;Come and see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip tells Nathanael, <strong>&#8220;Come and see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes the pattern of evangelism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faithful witnesses introduce people to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ Himself does the convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-andrew-the-forgotten-evangelist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Andrew: The Forgotten Evangelist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew rarely occupies the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter preaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Peter becomes one of the central figures in Acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet none of that happens without Andrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice Andrew&#8217;s pattern throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He repeatedly brings people to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here he brings Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later he brings the boy with five loaves and two fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still later he helps introduce Greek seekers to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew teaches us that some of the greatest Kingdom work happens quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History often remembers Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heaven surely remembers Andrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-jesus-gives-simon-a-new-name\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Gives Simon a New Name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing Jesus does after meeting Simon is rename him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Jesus always sees not merely what a person is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sees what they will become through His transforming grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simon means &#8220;hearing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter means &#8220;rock.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this moment, Simon is anything but rock-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is impulsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emotional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unstable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus names him according to His future work, not his present weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reflects God&#8217;s pattern throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abram becomes Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacob becomes Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simon becomes Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace gives believers a new identity before they fully live into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-philip-immediate-obedience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Philip: Immediate Obedience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus simply says: <strong>&#8220;Follow Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip offers no recorded questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No objections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True discipleship begins with obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding often comes afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people wait until every question is answered before following Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip reminds us that faith walks before it fully sees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-nathanael-s-skepticism\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nathanael&#8217;s Skepticism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathanael asks: <strong>&#8220;Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His skepticism is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nazareth was an obscure village with no significant prophetic reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Messiah was expected to come from Bethlehem, not to be known as a Nazarene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip wisely avoids arguing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply repeats Jesus&#8217; own invitation: <strong>&#8220;Come and see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many debates are best answered by introducing people to Christ Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experience with Jesus often accomplishes what arguments cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-an-israelite-indeed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;An Israelite Indeed&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus describes Nathanael as: <strong>&#8220;An Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wording intentionally recalls Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacob, whose name later became Israel, was known for deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathanael represents the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God delights in sincere seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus immediately recognizes genuine integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-fig-tree\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fig Tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John never explains what happened beneath the fig tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, Nathanael immediately understands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many scholars believe he had been praying or meditating on Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever occurred, Jesus&#8217; knowledge convinces Nathanael that He possesses supernatural insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deeper lesson remains clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long before we seek Christ&#8230; He already knows us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing in our lives escapes His attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His call begins with His initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-you-will-see-greater-things\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You Will See Greater Things&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathanael&#8217;s confession is remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus says his faith has only begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
