The conversation with the Samaritan woman has just reached its climax. In this moment, it becomes clear that The Harvest Is Ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She has believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She has left her water jar behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And she has hurried back into the city with a simple invitation: “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At that exact moment, the disciples return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John masterfully shifts the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While one group of people is coming toward<\/strong> Jesus… His own disciples are focused on something entirely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are thinking about lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is thinking about eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John wants us to see the contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples see hungry stomachs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus sees hungry souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples see a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus sees a mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This passage reminds us that it is possible to walk beside Jesus while completely missing what captures His heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John 4:27-38 NASB The focus is on Jesus’ mission to accomplish the Father’s will, the urgency of the spiritual harvest, and the privilege believers have to participate in God’s work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This passage shifts the disciples’ attention from earthly concerns to eternal priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As Jesus finishes speaking with the Samaritan woman, His disciples return from town carrying food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are surprised to find Him speaking with a Samaritan woman, but none of them question Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, the woman leaves for the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples urge Jesus: “Rabbi, eat.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus responds: “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples misunderstand Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They wonder if someone else has already brought Him food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus explains: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, looking toward the surrounding countryside, Jesus says: “Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As He speaks, many believe the people of Sychar are already walking across the fields toward Him because of the woman’s testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus explains that others have labored before them, and now His disciples will enter into work that others have begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The harvest has already started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples had gone into Sychar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They bought food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then they returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apparently, none of them shared the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of them invited anyone to meet Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet one woman, who had known Jesus for only a short time, returned with an entire village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John is not criticizing the disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is exposing a common human tendency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We often become so occupied with legitimate responsibilities that we overlook eternal opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples were not doing something sinful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They simply failed to see what Jesus saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How often do we do the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n We become consumed by: <\/p>\n\n\n\n All important things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet all temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus continually calls His followers to see beyond the immediate and to recognize the eternal opportunities all around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the most remarkable statements Jesus ever makes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Food sustains physical life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus says obedience sustains His soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His deepest satisfaction comes from accomplishing the Father’s purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Notice what Jesus does not<\/strong> say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He does not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Doing the Father’s will is His delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout John’s Gospel, Jesus repeatedly demonstrates that His entire life revolves around obedience to the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything He says…<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything He does…<\/p>\n\n\n\n And every miracle…<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every journey…<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every conversation…<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flows from His desire to glorify the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For believers, this becomes the model of true discipleship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Real satisfaction is not ultimately found in getting our own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is found in joining God’s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These four words carry tremendous spiritual weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Lift up your eyes.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The disciples were looking downward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Toward bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Toward daily needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And toward earthly concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus tells them to look outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many scholars believe the people of Sychar were already walking across the fields, perhaps wearing white garments that appeared like grain ready for harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whether that visual is intended or not, the point remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The harvest was already present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples simply failed to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of Satan’s greatest strategies is distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not necessarily leading believers into obvious sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But keeping them so occupied with temporary concerns that they fail to recognize eternal opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus continually redirects our vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harvest imagery fills the Old Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harvest represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus now gives it a missionary focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People are ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom is advancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The opportunity is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The urgency is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Notice what Jesus does not say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He does not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The fields will someday become ready.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n He says: “They are white for harvest.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The opportunity exists now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will always be reasons to delay obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus reminds His disciples that the harvest will not wait forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus introduces another important principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some believers sow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Others reap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Neither role is more important than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout redemptive history:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The prophets sowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John the Baptist sowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Samaritan woman sowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples would soon reap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later generations would sow again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God’s Kingdom advances through countless faithful servants whose work often overlaps across generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This truth protects us from discouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes we faithfully share Christ and never see visible results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That does not mean the work failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We may simply be sowing where another believer will later reap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Likewise, when we lead someone to Christ, we are often entering into years of labor performed by parents, pastors, teachers, faithful friends, or praying grandparents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God receives the glory because the harvest has always belonged to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus says: “He who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Notice the contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Earthly harvests eventually disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Grain is consumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fields become empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every earthly accomplishment eventually fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But spiritual fruit lasts forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every person brought into God’s Kingdom possesses eternal significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No investment yields greater returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus says: “So that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no competition in God’s Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only shared joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One believer plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another gathers the harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All rejoice together because the work belongs to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This spirit stands in sharp contrast to the rivalry often found in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kingdom celebrates faithfulness rather than personal recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n John quietly places the Samaritan woman beside the disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She possesses almost no theological training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She holds no official position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And she has known Jesus only briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet she immediately becomes an evangelist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Her message is beautifully simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She does not argue theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She does not answer every objection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And she simply invites people: “Come, see…”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Just as Andrew once said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just as Philip once said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout John’s Gospel, authentic evangelism begins with introducing people to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Changed people naturally invite others to meet the One who changed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tone moves from misunderstanding \u2192 revelation \u2192 urgency \u2192 hope \u2192 joyful participation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus expands His disciples’ vision from earthly needs to eternal realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n They begin by thinking about physical needs but are challenged to see spiritual realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She becomes an unexpected and effective witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They begin walking toward Jesus because of one person’s testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus found His deepest satisfaction in doing the Father’s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everyday encounters may become eternal opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many people are more open to the Gospel than we realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And some harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All serve the same Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The greatest use of our lives is participating in God’s redemptive work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples returned carrying bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Samaritan woman returned bringing people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One satisfied temporary hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other pointed souls toward eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Neither activity was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But one carried eternal significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus gently lifted His disciples’ eyes above the ordinary concerns of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fields surrounding them looked like farmland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus saw a mission field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The approaching crowd looked like strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus saw future worshipers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The disciples saw Samaritans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus saw people the Father loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the difference between human vision and divine vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The world trains us to evaluate people by their background, appearance, education, politics, wealth, failures, or usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus sees every person as someone created in the image of God and capable of becoming a citizen of His Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The harvest has not ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is not whether God is still working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question is whether we have lifted our eyes high enough to recognize where He is already at work and whether we are willing to join Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So the question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n When I look at the people around me, in my workplace, neighborhood, church, and daily routine, do I merely see interruptions to my schedule, or do I see fields that are already white for harvest, filled with people whom Christ is seeking and inviting into eternal life?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n While the Samaritan woman runs into the city to tell others about Jesus, the disciples return with food. At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?” They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
