{"id":4069,"date":"2026-08-10T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4069"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:22:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:22:13","slug":"the-officials-son-is-healed-john-4-43-54","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-officials-son-is-healed-john-4-43-54\/","title":{"rendered":"The Official&#8217;s Son Is Healed: Faith That Trusts the Word of Christ (John 4:43\u201354)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has just shown us an extraordinary revival in Samaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Samaritans believed because they heard Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus returns to Galilee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, the contrast is immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Samaritans accepted Jesus without seeing miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Galileans welcomed Him <strong>because<\/strong> they had seen His miracles in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally places these stories together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One group believes because of His words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another welcomes Him because of His works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question that now emerges is one that John will ask repeatedly throughout his Gospel: <strong>What kind of faith is genuine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is faith based on what our eyes can see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or is it rooted in confidence in who Jesus is?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer begins with a desperate father whose son is dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 4:43-54 NASB<br>After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast. Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, &#8220;Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.&#8221; The royal official said to Him, &#8220;Sir, come down before my child dies.&#8221; Jesus said to him, &#8220;Go; your son lives.&#8221; The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, &#8220;Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.&#8221; So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, &#8220;Your son lives&#8221;; and he himself believed and his whole household. This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the authority of Christ&#8217;s spoken word, the development of genuine faith, and Jesus&#8217; power over sickness and distance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Lord whose word carries divine authority,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the compassionate Savior,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the giver of life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the One who invites people to trust Him before they see the outcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is John&#8217;s <strong>second sign<\/strong>, and like the first, it reveals far more than miraculous power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reveals the reliability of Christ&#8217;s Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Royal Official<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The official&#8217;s son<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The official&#8217;s servants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The official&#8217;s household<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After two days in Samaria, Jesus returns to Galilee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reminds us of an interesting statement Jesus had made: <strong>&#8220;A prophet has no honor in his own country.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, many Galileans welcome Him because they had witnessed His miracles during Passover in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus returns to Cana, where He had turned water into wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A royal official from Capernaum hears that Jesus has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His son is gravely ill and near death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traveling nearly twenty miles uphill to Cana, the official pleads with Jesus: <strong>&#8220;Sir, come down before my child dies.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of immediately agreeing, Jesus responds: <strong>&#8220;Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official ignores the rebuke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His concern is singular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His son is dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again he pleads: <strong>&#8220;Sir, come down before my little child dies.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers with remarkable simplicity: <strong>&#8220;Go; your son lives.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not travel with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He offers no visible sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John then records one of the most beautiful sentences in the chapter: <strong>&#8220;The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the official journeys home, his servants meet him with joyful news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His son is alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he asks the exact time the fever left, they answer: <strong>&#8220;Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father immediately realizes it happened at the exact moment Jesus said: <strong>&#8220;Your son lives.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John concludes: <strong>&#8220;This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official and his entire household believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-growing-faith\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Growing Faith<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-a-father-at-the-end-of-himself\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Father at the End of Himself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John introduces this man simply as a royal official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He likely served Herod Antipas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He possessed influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet none of those things could heal his son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Illness has a way of exposing the limits of human power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money cannot purchase life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Position cannot command healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authority cannot defeat death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes God allows circumstances that strip away every false source of security so that we finally discover our greatest need is Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official&#8217;s desperation becomes the doorway to faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-come-down\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Come Down&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official repeatedly asks Jesus: <strong>&#8220;Come down.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His request is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He assumes Jesus must be physically present to heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His faith is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it is still limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like many of us, he places conditions on how God must work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus gently expands his understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Savior who created the universe is not limited by geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not need to stand beside the sickbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His authority extends wherever His word reaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This miracle quietly demonstrates Christ&#8217;s divine sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Distance means nothing to the One who upholds all creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-unless-you-see-signs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Unless You See Signs&#8230;&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, Jesus&#8217; response sounds unusually sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet notice the wording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pronouns are plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is addressing the broader attitude of Galilee rather than rejecting the official personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people desired miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few desired the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signs were meant to reveal Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, many treated them as spectacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John repeatedly warns against miracle-centered faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miracles may awaken interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But only faith rooted in Christ&#8217;s identity endures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-official-s-persistent-faith\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Official&#8217;s Persistent Faith<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official does something remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not argue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not become offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he simply repeats his request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True faith is often persistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It clings to Christ even when His answers are unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His desperation overcomes every obstacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pride disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Status disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only his trust in Jesus remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-go-your-son-lives\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Go; Your Son Lives&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus heals with nothing more than His word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And no journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Genesis, God created by speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Then God said&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the same divine authority appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disease obeys the voice of its Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle demonstrates that Jesus possesses the authority of God Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His words do not merely describe reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-man-believed-the-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The Man Believed the Word&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This verse marks the turning point of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John carefully distinguishes between two stages of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First: The man believes Jesus&#8217; word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only later does he see the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This order matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biblical faith trusts before it sees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official begins the long journey back to Capernaum without visible proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine that walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every mile presented an opportunity to doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every step required trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith often lives in the space between God&#8217;s promise and our experience of its fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many believers know that journey well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heart wrestles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet genuine faith continues walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-confirmation-strengthens-faith\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confirmation Strengthens Faith<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the servants report the exact hour of healing, the official&#8217;s faith deepens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John says: <strong>&#8220;He himself believed and his whole household.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not contradict the earlier statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, it shows faith maturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, he trusted Jesus concerning his son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now he entrusts himself fully to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith often grows progressively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crisis introduces us to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continued experience deepens our confidence in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-household-salvation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Household Salvation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John records that the entire household believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the New Testament, transformed lives frequently influence families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not teach automatic salvation through another person&#8217;s faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each individual must believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, it demonstrates how one person&#8217;s encounter with Christ often becomes the means through which others hear and respond to the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God frequently works through relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-second-sign\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Second Sign<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally numbers this miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because each sign reveals another aspect of Christ&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first sign transformed water into wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It revealed Jesus as the Bridegroom bringing the joy of the New Covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second sign reveals Jesus as the Lord whose word gives life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together they teach an important progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first sign addresses human emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second addresses human helplessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Christ can satisfy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Christ can save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-faith-that-grows\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faith That Grows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the progression throughout the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official begins by believing <strong>Jesus can<\/strong> heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he believes <strong>Jesus&#8217;
