{"id":4075,"date":"2026-08-12T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4075"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:36:18","slug":"the-son-equal-with-the-father-john-5-overview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-son-equal-with-the-father-john-5-overview\/","title":{"rendered":"The Son Equal with the Father: A Turning Point in John&#8217;s Gospel (John 5:19\u201347)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything in John&#8217;s Gospel has been moving toward this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has already revealed Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The eternal Word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Creator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Lamb of God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Son of God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Messiah.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Giver of Living Water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Lord of the Sabbath.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the religious leaders force the central question into the open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who does Jesus claim to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not merely claim to represent God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He claims equality with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This discourse is the theological center of the first half of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If John 1 reveals <strong>who Jesus is before creation<\/strong>, John 5 reveals <strong>who Jesus claims to be during His earthly ministry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two chapters stand like pillars supporting everything else John writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 5:19-47 NASB<br>Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, &#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. &#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. &#8220;I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. &#8220;If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish-the very works that I do-testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. I do not receive glory from men; but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. I have come in My Father&#8217;s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-this-section\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of This Section<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John 5:19\u201347 is not a collection of unrelated teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a single continuous response to a single accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After healing on the Sabbath, Jesus refers to God as: <strong>&#8220;My Father.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders immediately understand the implication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John tells us: <strong>&#8220;For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He&#8230; was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.&#8221;<\/strong> (John 5:18)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything Jesus says afterward explains why that conclusion is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not deny their understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He confirms it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-this-passage-matters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Passage Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people admire Jesus as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">a moral teacher,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">a prophet,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">a revolutionary,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">or a miracle worker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John 5 leaves no room for those categories alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus claims:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">to possess the Father&#8217;s authority,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">to give life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">to judge humanity,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">to receive the same honor as the Father,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and to fulfill everything Moses wrote.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not the claims of merely a good teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Jesus is telling the truth, He deserves worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If He is not, He cannot simply be called a good man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John forces every reader to confront that reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-four-great-themes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Four Great Themes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next several studies, we will examine four foundational truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-the-unity-of-the-father-and-the-son\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The Unity of the Father and the Son<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus explains that everything He does is in perfect unity with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is complete divine harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-christ-s-authority\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Christ&#8217;s Authority<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus claims authority over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">resurrection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">judgment,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and eternal destiny.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No prophet ever claimed such authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-the-witnesses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. The Witnesses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus calls multiple witnesses to testify concerning Him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">John the Baptist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">His miracles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Scriptures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Moses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God has not left humanity without evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-unbelief\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Unbelief<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most sobering part of the discourse is Jesus&#8217; explanation of why people reject Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not because evidence is lacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is because the human heart often prefers its own glory over God&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That truth remains just as relevant today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-we-need-to-slow-down\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why We Need to Slow Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These verses contain some of the richest doctrines in the New Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each paragraph could easily become an entire chapter in a systematic theology textbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than rushing through them, we will examine each section carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to understand not only <strong>what<\/strong> Jesus said, but <strong>why<\/strong> these claims changed history forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone shifts dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier chapters are filled with invitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Come and see.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Come and drink.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the tone becomes judicial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus speaks like a King presenting His credentials before the courtroom of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is no longer curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-is-about-to-reveal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Is About to Reveal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next four studies, Jesus will reveal Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Equal with the Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Giver of Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Judge of All Humanity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Lord of the Resurrection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Fulfillment of Scripture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The One to whom Moses pointed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The only source of eternal life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These claims ultimately explain why the Cross became inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders did not crucify Jesus merely because He performed miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They sought His death because He claimed divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every generation must answer the same question the religious leaders faced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who is Jesus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely: &#8220;What has He done?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What does He teach?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But: <strong>Who is He?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else depends upon the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healing at Bethesda began with one restored life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It now expands into one of the Bible&#8217;s greatest revelations of Christ&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus no longer speaks primarily about miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He speaks about Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His relationship with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And His authority over life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His authority over death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His authority over eternity itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are staggering claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John deliberately slows the narrative because this is the point where admiration must become decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one can leave John 5 believing Jesus was merely a wise religious teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He either is exactly who He claims to be&#8230; or He is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John leaves no comfortable middle ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we begin this journey through Jesus&#8217; discourse, we are invited to examine not only His words, but our own response to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is no longer whether Jesus performed miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is whether we are willing to bow before the One who claims the very authority of God Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If Jesus truly possesses the Father&#8217;s authority, gives eternal life, and will one day judge every person, what should my response to Him be today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
