To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders believed only God possessed authority over life and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He makes an astonishing declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Father has entrusted that authority to the Son.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healing at Bethesda demonstrated Christ&#8217;s authority over one disabled man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus expands the scope infinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is not merely Lord over sickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is Lord over life itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely over one lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But over eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This section contains some of the clearest teaching in all of Scripture regarding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">spiritual resurrection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">physical resurrection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">eternal life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and final judgment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants every reader to understand that the One standing in the Temple courts is the same One before whom every human being will one day stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Christ&#8217;s authority to give spiritual life now, raise the physically dead in the future, and judge all humanity with perfect righteousness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Son of God,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Son of Man,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Author of life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the righteous Judge,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the fulfillment of Daniel&#8217;s prophetic vision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage moves from present salvation to future resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From grace to judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From invitation to accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Jewish religious leaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Jesus continues speaking to His opponents, His words extend to every person who has ever lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This discourse reaches beyond first-century Jerusalem to the final day of human history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing His response to the religious leaders, Jesus declares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explains that just as the Father possesses life in Himself, He has granted the Son to possess life in Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father has also given the Son authority to execute judgment because He is the Son of Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then speaks of a future resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A time is coming when: <strong>&#8220;All who are in the tombs will hear His voice.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some will rise to the resurrection of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others to the resurrection of judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes by affirming that His judgment is perfectly just because He does not seek His own will but the will of the Father who sent Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-resurrection-and-judgment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Resurrection and Judgment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-an-hour-is-coming-and-now-is\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;An Hour Is Coming\u2014and Now Is&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement is one of John&#8217;s favorite expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the two time frames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;An hour is coming&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;&#8230;and now is.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is speaking about two different realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is happening now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is still to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The present reality is spiritual resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future reality is bodily resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally intertwines both because eternal life begins before physical death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believers do not wait until heaven to begin living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They receive new life the moment they believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resurrection has already begun in one sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its fullness awaits Christ&#8217;s return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-dead-who-hear\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dead Who Hear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus first speaks about spiritually dead people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul later explains: <strong>&#8220;You were dead in your trespasses and sins.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritual death is not the absence of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is separation from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dead people cannot revive themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as Lazarus could not call himself from the tomb&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sinners cannot produce spiritual life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;The dead will hear the voice of the Son of God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The voice itself creates the ability to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, God&#8217;s Word accomplishes what it commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creation came into existence by His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus walked out of the tomb by His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spiritually dead receive life by His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salvation is ultimately God&#8217;s gracious initiative before it is our response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-life-in-himself\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life in Himself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus declares: <strong>&#8220;Just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the deepest statements in John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Created beings receive life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus possesses life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Theologians call this <strong>aseity<\/strong>\u2014self-existent life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only God possesses life that depends on no one else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not merely alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is <strong>Life itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has already introduced this theme: <strong>&#8220;In Him was life.&#8221;<\/strong> (John 1:4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later Jesus will declare: <strong>&#8220;I am the resurrection and the life.&#8221;<\/strong> (John 11:25)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not simply give life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is its eternal source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-the-son-judges\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Son Judges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says the Father gave Him authority to judge: <strong>&#8220;Because He is the Son of Man.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This title reaches back to <strong>Daniel 7:13\u201314<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel saw: <strong>&#8220;One like a Son of Man&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">coming before the Ancient of Days and receiving everlasting dominion, glory, and a kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders would have recognized the reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus identifies Himself as the fulfillment of Daniel&#8217;s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Judge of history is standing before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, they believe they are putting Jesus on trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, they stand before their own Judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-two-resurrections\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Resurrections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus now shifts to the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;All who are in the tombs will hear His voice.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the universality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No grave is beyond Christ&#8217;s authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No ocean can hide the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And no fire can destroy His ability to raise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every human being who has ever lived will hear His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes one of Scripture&#8217;s clearest teachings on the final resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two destinies emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resurrection of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resurrection of judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not teach universal salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither does He teach annihilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every person will be raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not <strong>whether<\/strong> we will stand before Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is <strong>how<\/strong> we will stand before Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-resurrection-of-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Resurrection of Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Those who did the good deeds&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">will enter the resurrection of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this may seem to contradict salvation by grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s Gospel has repeatedly emphasized faith alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solution lies in understanding biblical evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good works do not produce salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reveal it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is describing the outward evidence of inward faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A transformed life demonstrates genuine belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus taught the same principle elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees are known by their fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fruit does not make the tree alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It proves it is alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-resurrection-of-judgment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Resurrection of Judgment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, Jesus speaks of those:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;who committed the evil deeds.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persistent unbelief ultimately produces a life characterized by rebellion against God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, works reveal the condition of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judgment exposes what faith\u2014or unbelief\u2014has already produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This aligns perfectly with the rest of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belief leads to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unbelief remains under condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-perfect-justice\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perfect Justice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;My judgment is just.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human judges possess limited knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They misinterpret motives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Witnesses lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of those limitations exist for Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knows every thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every hidden act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And every opportunity received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every response to God&#8217;s grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His judgment is not merely fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one will ever question His verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-harmony-of-the-father-and-the-son\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Harmony of the Father and the Son<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again Jesus returns to His relationship with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says: <strong>&#8220;I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not imply separate competing desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, it reveals perfect harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Son delights in accomplishing the Father&#8217;s will because Their purpose is eternally one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judgment itself flows from divine love and justice working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-two-voices-of-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Two Voices of Christ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One fascinating pattern emerges in this passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus speaks of His voice twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice calls spiritually dead people into eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice calls physically dead people from their graves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same voice that awakens faith today will awaken every cemetery tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one else in history has ever made such a claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>invitation \u2192 authority \u2192 hope \u2192 solemn accountability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus offers eternal life while simultaneously revealing Himself as the Judge before whom every person will one day stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the source of life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Son of
