{"id":4085,"date":"2026-08-15T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4085"},"modified":"2026-08-09T13:05:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T17:05:51","slug":"the-five-witnesses-that-testify-about-jesus-john-5-31-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-five-witnesses-that-testify-about-jesus-john-5-31-40\/","title":{"rendered":"The Five Witnesses That Testify About Jesus (John 5:31\u201340)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has just declared that He possesses the authority to give life, raise the dead, and judge all humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are extraordinary claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obvious question follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do we know they are true?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers according to Jewish law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Law required multiple witnesses to establish the truth of a matter <strong>(Deuteronomy 19:15)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than asking His listeners to accept His claims blindly, Jesus presents overwhelming evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is as though the courtroom doors open and witness after witness enters to testify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remarkable truth is that Jesus does not rely upon only one witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He presents five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each one is sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together they become undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants every reader to understand that Christian faith is not blind faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It rests upon God&#8217;s own testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 5:31-40 NASB<br>&#8220;If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish-the very works that I do-testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the overwhelming testimony to Christ&#8217;s identity and the tragedy of unbelief despite clear evidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of prophecy,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the One authenticated by the Father,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the center of Scripture,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Messiah whom Israel had long awaited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage teaches that unbelief is rarely caused by insufficient evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is most often rooted in an unwilling heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Jewish religious leaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>John the Baptist<\/strong> (referenced)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Moses (referenced)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Father (spoken of throughout the passage)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus continues responding to the religious leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He acknowledges that, according to their legal standards, testimony requires witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He then presents five sources that testify concerning Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, John the Baptist bore witness that Jesus is the Lamb of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, the miracles Jesus performs testify that the Father sent Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, the Father Himself bears witness through His works and revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fourth, the Scriptures continually testify concerning Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Moses\u2014the very person in whom the religious leaders place their confidence\u2014also wrote about Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all this evidence, the religious leaders refuse to come to Him for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their problem is not ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is unbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-five-witnesses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of the Five Witnesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-courtroom-of-heaven\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Courtroom of Heaven<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John presents this passage almost like a courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not the accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They believe they are evaluating Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, His words expose the condition of their own hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Judge allows the evidence to be heard before rendering His verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, God graciously provides evidence before calling people to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith is never irrational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a reasonable response to divine revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-witness-one-john-the-baptist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Witness One: John the Baptist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins with someone His opponents respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John the Baptist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had once flocked to hear him preach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many even wondered whether John himself was the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet John repeatedly pointed away from himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He declared: <strong>&#8220;Behold, the Lamb of God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He testified: <strong>&#8220;This is the Son of<\/strong> God.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus calls John: <strong>&#8220;The lamp that was burning and was shining.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the wording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John was <strong>a lamp<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is <strong>the Light<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lamp reflects light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It never creates it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s ministry was never intended to become the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its purpose was to illuminate Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This remains the purpose of every faithful preacher, teacher, and believer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our calling is not to attract people to ourselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is to point them to Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-witness-two-the-works-of-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Witness Two: The Works of Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then points to His miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel, miracles are called <strong>signs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sign points beyond itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healing the sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giving sight to the blind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning water into wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeding the multitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each miracle reveals something about Christ&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracles themselves are not the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are evidence of the One who is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every work demonstrates that the Father is acting through the Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No ordinary prophet ever exercised authority like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The works authenticate the Worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-witness-three-the-father\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Witness Three: The Father<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus next declares that the Father Himself testifies concerning Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This testimony was visibly given at Jesus&#8217; baptism, when the Father announced: <strong>&#8220;This is My beloved Son.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus seems to point beyond that single event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father&#8217;s testimony is woven throughout His entire ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every fulfilled prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And every word spoken by Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every act of divine compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All reveal the Father&#8217;s approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus tells the religious leaders something sobering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have neither heard His voice nor seen His form because His Word does not dwell within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They claim to know God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they reject the One whom God has sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True knowledge of the Father always leads to the Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-witness-four-the-scriptures\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Witness Four: The Scriptures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most powerful witness is Scripture itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement transforms how we read the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scriptures are not merely a collection of moral lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not simply Israel&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are God&#8217;s unified story pointing to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis anticipates Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sacrifices foreshadow Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The priesthood pictures Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kings point toward Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophets announce Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Psalms sing of Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wisdom literature prepares for Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Old Testament is not complete without Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not diminish Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He reveals its ultimate purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every page ultimately finds its fulfillment in Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-tragedy-of-biblical-knowledge-without-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tragedy of Biblical Knowledge Without Christ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells the religious leaders something shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They study the Scriptures diligently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet they miss the Savior standing before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the greatest warnings in all of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to know the Bible extensively while failing to know its Author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowledge alone does not save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Christ does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of Bible study is not merely increased information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is deeper communion with the One to whom the Scriptures point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every sermon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And every devotional reading should ultimately lead us toward Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-you-are-unwilling-to-come-to-me\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You Are Unwilling to Come to Me&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be the saddest sentence in the passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not say: &#8220;You are unable because there is insufficient evidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says: <strong>&#8220;You are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obstacle is not intellectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is volitional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence has already been presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is the human will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often reject Christ not because He is unconvincing but because surrendering to Him requires repentance, humility, and a willingness to relinquish self-rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus lovingly exposes the real issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-witness-five-moses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Witness Five: Moses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Jesus mentions Moses more fully in verses 45\u201347, he begins preparing the reader here by emphasizing the testimony of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the religious leaders, Moses represented the highest earthly authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the writings of Moses consistently anticipate Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Passover lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bronze serpent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tabernacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sacrificial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coming Prophet like Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every one of these finds fulfillment in Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The irony is profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who claimed to defend Moses were actually rejecting the One Moses proclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-evidence-and-the-human-heart\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evidence and the Human Heart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the great lessons of this passage is that evidence alone never guarantees belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">John&#8217;s testimony.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Miracles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Father&#8217;s witness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Scriptures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Moses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still they refused Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John continually reminds us that faith involves more than accumulating evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires a heart willing to respond to God&#8217;s revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem has never been that God remained silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that sinful humanity often refuses to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>legal testimony \u2192 gracious invitation \u2192 solemn exposure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus patiently presents overwhelming evidence before revealing the deeper issue of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of all Scripture,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the One authenticated by heaven,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the promised Messiah,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the only source of eternal life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-religious-leaders\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Religious Leaders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They continue searching the Scriptures while refusing the One to whom the Scriptures point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He lovingly presents overwhelming evidence while still inviting His opponents to receive life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
