{"id":4088,"date":"2026-08-16T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4088"},"modified":"2026-08-09T13:28:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T17:28:50","slug":"why-people-reject-jesus-john-5-41-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/why-people-reject-jesus-john-5-41-47\/","title":{"rendered":"Why People Reject Jesus Despite the Evidence (John 5:41\u201347)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has now presented His case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has called witness after witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John the Baptist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A verdict should naturally follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the religious leaders remain unconvinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the question Jesus now answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His answer is one of the most penetrating diagnoses of the human heart in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest barrier to faith is not intellectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is not that people cannot find enough evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that, apart from God&#8217;s grace, people often do not want the implications of that evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John records these verses because this issue reaches far beyond first-century Judaism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every generation asks why people reject Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus Himself provides the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 5:41-47 NASB<br>I do not receive glory from men; but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. I have come in My Father&#8217;s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the true nature of unbelief, the danger of loving human approval more than God, and the testimony of Moses concerning Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the One sent by the Father,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Moses&#8217; writings,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the object of genuine faith,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the revealer of the human heart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage explains why even overwhelming evidence cannot produce saving faith apart from a heart willing to receive God&#8217;s truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Jewish religious leaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Moses<\/strong> (referenced)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes His discourse by explaining that He does not seek glory from people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He exposes the religious leaders&#8217; hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They claim to love God, yet they reject the One whom God has sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells them they are willing to receive those who come seeking their own glory but reject the One who comes in the Father&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks a searching question: <strong>&#8220;How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Jesus addresses the one figure they believed would defend them before God: <strong>Moses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of defending them, Moses will stand as their accuser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if they truly believed Moses, they would believe Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses wrote about Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes with sobering words: <strong>&#8220;If you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-unbelief\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Unbelief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-do-not-receive-glory-from-men\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I Do Not Receive Glory From Men&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins with an astonishing statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I do not receive glory from men.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean human worship is unimportant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture repeatedly commands people to glorify Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, Jesus is declaring that His identity does not depend upon human recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kings often sought public approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious leaders frequently pursued honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father&#8217;s approval is sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reveals one of the greatest differences between Christ and fallen humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our sinful nature craves recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus lives entirely for the Father&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His security rests in His relationship with the Father, not in the applause of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-know-you\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I Know You&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most sobering words in this passage are these: <strong>&#8220;I know you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders knew theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They knew Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They knew tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus knew them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a profound difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sees beneath public appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond outward obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past carefully maintained reputations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Into the motives of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says: <strong>&#8220;You do not have the love of God in yourselves.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most devastating spiritual diagnoses in Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They loved religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they did not truly love God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two are not always the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-loving-human-glory\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loving Human Glory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus identifies one of the deepest roots of unbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;You receive glory from one another.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders had become trapped in a system of mutual admiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These things had become more precious than truth itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus exposes a timeless temptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The desire for human approval can become one of the greatest obstacles to genuine faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pride rarely announces itself openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It often disguises itself as respectability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet when maintaining our reputation becomes more important than submitting to God&#8217;s truth, pride has taken the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-can-you-believe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;How Can You Believe?&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that Jesus does not ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Why don&#8217;t you believe?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks: <strong>&#8220;How can you believe?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As long as they continue to seek human approval over God&#8217;s approval, genuine faith becomes impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith requires humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires admitting that we need grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires surrendering control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proud heart resists each of those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This explains why Jesus consistently praised childlike faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children come empty-handed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proud come carrying their own achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one leaves justified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-receiving-false-messiahs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Receiving False Messiahs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus makes a remarkable prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History proved Him right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Jesus&#8217; resurrection, several false messianic figures attracted followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More broadly, humanity has consistently embraced leaders who promise power, prosperity, or national glory while rejecting the humble Messiah who calls for repentance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because false messiahs often affirm human pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true Messiah calls us to die to ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This warning remains relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever people desire a savior who simply validates their existing desires rather than transforms their hearts, they become vulnerable to deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-moses-the-accuser\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moses the Accuser<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the greatest irony in the passage appears here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders believed Moses would defend them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very person whose authority they claimed becomes the witness against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Moses consistently pointed beyond himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider just a few examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The Passover lamb pointed to Christ.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The bronze serpent pointed to Christ.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The manna pointed to Christ as the Bread of Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Tabernacle pointed to Christ dwelling among His people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The sacrificial system pointed to Christ&#8217;s atoning death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The promised Prophet like Moses pointed directly to Christ.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every page of the Pentateuch anticipates the coming Redeemer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rejecting Jesus is therefore rejecting the very fulfillment of Moses&#8217; writings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-scripture-is-unified\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scripture Is Unified<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of John&#8217;s major themes reaches its climax here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bible tells one story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was written over centuries by many human authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet it possesses one divine Author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture consistently points toward Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Old Testament is preparation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Gospels are revelation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Epistles are explanation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Revelation is consummation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unity of Scripture is one of its greatest testimonies to divine inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus Himself understood the Bible this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, so should we.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-heart-of-unbelief\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Heart of Unbelief<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus ultimately exposes unbelief as a heart issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean evidence is irrelevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has already supplied abundant evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, evidence alone cannot overcome a heart unwilling to surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith involves both mind and heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth must be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it must also be embraced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders possessed the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They lacked the humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-great-irony\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Great Irony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout this entire discourse, the religious leaders believed they were examining Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, Jesus has been examining them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They placed Him on trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He revealed their hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pattern continues throughout John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever people believe they are evaluating Christ, they eventually discover that Christ is evaluating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every encounter with Jesus becomes a mirror revealing the true condition of the human heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>evidence \u2192 exposure \u2192 warning \u2192 invitation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus&#8217; words become increasingly personal as He lovingly confronts the deepest barriers to faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the One who seeks the Father&#8217;s glory,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Moses,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the center of all Scripture,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the only true object of saving faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-religious-leaders\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Religious Leaders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They continue rejecting Jesus despite overwhelming evidence because they value human praise more than God&#8217;s approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He concludes not with condemnation alone but with another invitation to believe the Scriptures that testify about Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-pride-is-a-greater-barrier-than-ignorance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.
