{"id":4098,"date":"2026-08-19T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4098"},"modified":"2026-08-09T14:41:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T18:41:59","slug":"the-greater-moses-john-6-feeding-five-thousand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-greater-moses-john-6-feeding-five-thousand\/","title":{"rendered":"The Miracle Behind the Miracle: Five Loaves, Two Fish, and the Greater Moses (John 6:1\u201315)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the remarkable features of John&#8217;s Gospel is that he often says very little while expecting his readers to remember very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John assumes his readers know Israel&#8217;s Scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He deliberately includes details that seem ordinary at first glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve baskets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each detail functions like a doorway leading back into the Old Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is quietly telling us: <strong>&#8220;You&#8217;ve seen this story before.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only this time, Someone greater than Moses has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feeding of the five thousand is not merely an isolated miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a tapestry woven together from centuries of biblical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every thread points to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 6:1-15 NASB<br>After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, &#8220;Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?&#8221; This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. Philip answered Him, &#8220;Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.&#8221; One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter&#8217;s brother, said to Him, &#8220;There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?&#8221; Jesus said, &#8220;Have the people sit down.&#8221; Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. When they were filled, He said to His disciples, &#8220;Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.&#8221; So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, &#8220;This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.&#8221; So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel&#8217;s history, the greater Moses, the greater Elisha, the true Shepherd, and the ultimate Provider.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the new Moses,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the true Bread from Heaven,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Shepherd of Psalm 23,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Lord of Creation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the fulfillment of God&#8217;s covenant promises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to understand that every great figure in Israel&#8217;s history was preparing God&#8217;s people for Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-behind-the-miracle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology Behind the Miracle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-passover-is-not-an-accidental-detail\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Passover Is Not an Accidental Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes: <strong>&#8220;Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why mention Passover?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Passover immediately calls Israel to remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">slavery in Egypt,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the blood of the lamb,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Exodus,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the wilderness,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the manna.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything that follows should therefore be interpreted through that lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing is deliberate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Israel once prepared to remember God&#8217;s deliverance through Moses, Jesus now performs a miracle that reveals Himself as the greater Deliverer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is preparing us for the Bread of Life discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Passover lamb pointed forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manna pointed forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the One to whom both pointed is standing before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus-goes-up-the-mountain\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Goes Up the Mountain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John says: <strong>&#8220;Jesus went up on the mountain.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, this seems like a geographical detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet throughout Scripture, mountains are places of divine revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses received the Law on Mount Sinai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elijah encountered God on Mount Horeb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus ascends a mountain before revealing Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parallels are intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John presents Jesus as the new and greater Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet there is an important difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses climbed the mountain to receive God&#8217;s Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus ascends the mountain because <strong>He is God&#8217;s Word.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-moses-and-the-manna\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moses and the Manna<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No Old Testament event lies closer beneath this miracle than Exodus 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel was hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God provided bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now another multitude is hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus provides bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The similarities are obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The differences are even more significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses prayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus simply gives thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses received manna from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus creates bread Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses pointed to God&#8217;s provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is God&#8217;s provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd immediately senses the connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why they proclaim: <strong>&#8220;This is truly the Prophet.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They recognize another Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply fail to realize He is infinitely greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-greater-elisha\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Greater Elisha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many readers overlook another important Old Testament connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>2 Kings 4:42\u201344<\/strong>, the prophet Elisha feeds one hundred men using twenty barley loaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The servant protests: <strong>&#8220;How can I set this before a hundred men?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elisha answers: <strong>&#8220;They shall eat and have some left over.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone eats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s readers would immediately recognize the similarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet notice the escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elisha feeds one hundred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus feeds thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elisha uses twenty loaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus uses five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elisha performs the miracle through prophetic authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus performs it through His own divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John consistently presents Jesus as greater than every Old Testament prophet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-green-grass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Green Grass<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John alone records: <strong>&#8220;There was much grass in the place.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of those details readers often skip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately, Psalm 23 comes to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;He makes me lie down in green pastures.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shepherd gathers His sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shepherd feeds them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Shepherd provides abundant rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John quietly reveals Jesus fulfilling David&#8217;s great Shepherd Psalm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people think they are attending a miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John knows they are witnessing the Shepherd promised centuries earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-barley-loaves\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Barley Loaves?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John specifically identifies the bread as <strong>barley loaves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barley was the bread of ordinary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reminds us of several important biblical themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God delights in working through humble means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Messiah identifies with ordinary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kingdom does not advance through earthly prestige.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ begins with what appears insignificant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A manger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A carpenter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Fishermen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Barley bread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God consistently chooses what the world overlooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus-gives-thanks\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Gives Thanks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek word John uses is <strong>euchariste\u014d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means <strong>&#8220;to give thanks.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is more than good manners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, thanksgiving acknowledges God&#8217;s faithful provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus gives thanks <strong>before<\/strong> the multiplication occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith expresses gratitude before visible provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes a pattern throughout Christ&#8217;s ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His confidence never rests in visible resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It rests in the Father&#8217;s faithfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-twelve-baskets\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Twelve Baskets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally records the number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Twelve.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, twelve represents the covenant people of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Twelve tribes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, twelve apostles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbolism is difficult to miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus provides more than enough for all Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the baskets also hint toward something larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Messiah&#8217;s provision will ultimately overflow beyond Israel into the nations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is no shortage in Christ&#8217;s Kingdom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-bread-that-cannot-satisfy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bread That Cannot Satisfy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, the crowd misunderstands the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They focus on the bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus focuses on what the bread represents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physical bread satisfies temporarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the next morning&#8230; Everyone is hungry again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This temporary satisfaction becomes the perfect illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything earthly eventually leaves us hungry again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Achievement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Pleasure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None permanently satisfies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle intentionally leaves people wanting more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the bread itself was never the destination&#8230; <strong>The Bread-Giver was.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-prophet-like-moses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Prophet Like Moses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd&#8217;s conclusion comes directly from <strong>Deuteronomy 18<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses promised: <strong>&#8220;The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries Israel waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would another Moses come?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would another Exodus occur?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And would God again feed His people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John answers: Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something even greater has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promised Prophet has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely another servant of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God Himself has come among His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-king-they-wanted\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The King They Wanted<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle ends with a misunderstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd attempts to seize Jesus and make Him king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their theology is partly correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus is King.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their expectations are completely wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They want political freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus offers freedom from sin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They want bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus offers Himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They want another earthly kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus has come to establish the Kingdom of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The temptation to reshape Jesus according to our desires remains one of humanity&#8217;s greatest spiritual dangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
