It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. But He said to them, &#8220;It is I; do not be afraid.&#8221; So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were Him into the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John then records a remarkable detail: <strong>&#8220;Immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storm narrative ends almost as suddenly as it began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John&#8217;s attention never description of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout his Gospel, darkness symbolizes a world separated from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nicodemus came by night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judas leaves into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is the Light shining in darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the disciples find themselves surrounded by darkness before Jesus appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is more than weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reflects the human condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life apart from Christ is often marked by uncertainty, fear, and limited vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Light enters that darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-sea-represents-chaos\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sea Represents Chaos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To modern readers, the sea is often beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the ancient Jewish mind, it symbolized danger and chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Old Testament:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The deep waters represent forces beyond human control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The sea often pictures disorder and opposition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Leviathan emerges from the sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jonah is swallowed in the sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Psalms describe God ruling over the raging waters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only God exercises complete authority over the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes Jesus&#8217; actions profoundly significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not merely survive the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He walks upon it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very forces that terrify humanity exist beneath His feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-only-god-walks-upon-the-waters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Only God Walks Upon the Waters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Old Testament repeatedly attributes this authority to God alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Job declares: <strong>&#8220;He alone stretches out the heavens and tramples down the waves of the sea.&#8221; (Job 9:8)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Psalms proclaim that God rules the roaring seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah describes the Lord making a path through mighty class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;It Is I&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek phrase is: <strong>Ego eimi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Literally: <strong>&#8220;I AM.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the phrase can simply mean &#8220;It is I&#8221; in ordinary conversation, John consistently uses <strong>ego eimi<\/strong> with deeper theological significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier Jesus declared: &#8220;I AM.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later He will say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">I AM the Bread of Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I AM the Light of the World.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I AM the Good Shepherd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I AM the Resurrection and the Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Before Abraham was born&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I AM.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally echoes God&#8217;s self-revelation to Moses in <strong>Exodus 3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standing upon the waters, Jesus identifies Himself with the covenant God of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle and the declaration belong together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-do-not-be-afraid\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Do Not Be Afraid&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, whenever God draws near, fear often follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shepherds at Bethlehem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The women at the empty tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again and again, God&#8217;s first words are: <strong>&#8220;Do not be afraid.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear gives way to peace not because circumstances immediately change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear fades because God is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples are still in the storm when Jesus speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His presence becomes their confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-they-willingly-received-him\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">They Willingly Received Him<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes: <strong>&#8220;They were willing to receive Him into the boat.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That wording deserves attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Receiving Jesus becomes another major theme in John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John began by writing: <strong>&#8220;As many as received Him&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the disciples receive Him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is both a literal and symbolic dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The safest place in the storm is wherever Christ is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-immediately-they-reached-the-shore\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immediately They Reached the Shore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John concludes with another miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately the boat reaches its destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He offers no explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No elaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply the fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the destination is less important than the Traveler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once Christ enters the boat, the journey reaches its intended end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some scholars see symbolic meaning here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Christian life is not free from storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Christ Himself guarantees the arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether John intended that application or not, it harmonizes beautifully with the broader themes of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-miracle-between-two-sermons\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Miracle Between Two Sermons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice John&#8217;s literary structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus feeds the multitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus walks upon the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He knows the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knows their fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He comes before they even understand what they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reflects the entire Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The incarnation itself is God coming to humanity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grace always begins with God&#8217;s initiative.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>darkness \u2192 fear Christ Comes to His People<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace begins with God&#8217;s initiative, not ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples believed they were alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The darkness hid Jesus from their sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storm exhausted their strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The waves reminded them how small they really were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something impossible appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One they had left behind came walking across the very thing they feared most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What terrified them became the pathway by which Christ reached them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be one of the most comforting truths in all of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obstacles that seem impossible to us are never obstacles to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storm that threatens to overwhelm us remains beneath His feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The darkness that limits our vision never limits His.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what Jesus does not say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not first explain the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He does not answer every question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He simply reveals Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I AM. Do not be afraid.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That order matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peace does not come from understanding every circumstance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peace comes from knowing the One who stands sovereign over every circumstance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to see that the greatest miracle is not that Jesus walked upon the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest miracle is that God Himself came to frightened people and invited them to trust His presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That invitation remains just as real today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The storms may differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Savior has not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When the storms of life reveal how little control I truly possess, will I fix my attention on the wind and the waves, or on the Savior who still comes to His people saying, &#8220;I AM.
