{"id":4161,"date":"2026-08-29T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4161"},"modified":"2026-08-23T11:51:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T15:51:33","slug":"my-teaching-is-not-mine-john-7-14-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/my-teaching-is-not-mine-john-7-14-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Teaches at the Feast: &#8220;My Teaching Is Not Mine&#8221; (John 7:14\u201324)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has quietly arrived in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city is filled with pilgrims celebrating the Feast of Booths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rumors about Him spread everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some wonder where He is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others whisper about His identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still others fear speaking His name publicly because of the religious leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, halfway through the feast, Jesus suddenly appears in the Temple and begins teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not come when His brothers expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He came when the Father determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John continues emphasizing one of his central themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus never acts according to human expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything He does unfolds according to heaven&#8217;s perfect timetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 7:14-24 NASB<br>But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. The Jews then were astonished, saying, &#8220;How has this man become learned, having never been educated?&#8221; So Jesus answered them and said, &#8220;My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. &#8220;Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?&#8221; The crowd answered, &#8220;You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?&#8221; Jesus answered them, &#8220;I did one deed, and you all marvel. For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the divine authority of Jesus&#8217; teaching, the relationship between obedience and understanding, and the necessity of righteous judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Teacher sent from the Father,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the perfectly obedient Son,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the embodiment of truth,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the righteous Judge who exposes superficial religion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage reminds us that spiritual understanding begins not merely with intelligence, but with a heart willing to obey God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Jewish religious leaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The crowds gathered in Jerusalem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the middle of the Feast of Booths, Jesus begins teaching publicly in the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders are astonished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ask: <strong>&#8220;How has this man become learned, having never been educated?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers: <strong>&#8220;My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continues: <strong>&#8220;If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus explains that those seeking their own glory speak on their own authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He, however, seeks the glory of the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He then confronts the religious leaders directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They claim to honor Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet they do not keep Moses&#8217; Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are even seeking to kill Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd reacts with surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some accuse Jesus of being demon-possessed because they are unaware of the leaders&#8217; plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus points back to the healing at the Pool of Bethesda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders were willing to circumcise on the Sabbath to fulfill the Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why, then, were they angry because He made an entire man well on the Sabbath?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes with one of the most important commands in John&#8217;s Gospel: <strong>&#8220;Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-divine-authority\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Divine Authority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-has-this-man-become-learned\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;How Has This Man Become Learned?&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders are genuinely amazed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus teaches with extraordinary depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet He has never studied under one of the famous rabbis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In first-century Judaism, authority normally flowed through recognized schools and respected teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus possesses neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or so they think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to see the irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One through whom all wisdom was created is being questioned about His education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Creator of truth is being examined by students of truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source of wisdom does not need human accreditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-my-teaching-is-not-mine\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;My Teaching Is Not Mine&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement beautifully illustrates the unity between the Father and the Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not denying ownership of His teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is revealing its source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything He teaches perfectly reflects the Father&#8217;s heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no contradiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel, Jesus repeatedly says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">My teaching comes from the Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">My works come from the Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">My words come from the Father.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">My mission comes from the Father.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Son perfectly reveals the Father because He eternally shares His nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-obedience-before-understanding\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obedience Before Understanding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most profound statement in the passage is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people assume understanding comes before obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reverses the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A willing heart receives greater light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean blind obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those genuinely willing to follow God become increasingly able to recognize His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest obstacle to understanding is often not intellectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is moral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A heart determined to resist God&#8217;s will will continually find reasons to reject His truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-seeking-god-s-glory\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeking God&#8217;s Glory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus contrasts two kinds of teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One seeks personal recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other seeks God&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">False teachers ultimately point people toward themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faithful teachers disappear behind the truth they proclaim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This perfectly reflects John the Baptist&#8217;s earlier words: <strong>&#8220;He must increase, but I must decrease.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus Himself lives according to the same principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His entire earthly ministry seeks the Father&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes the pattern for every Christian leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-irony-of-moses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Irony of Moses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus asks: <strong>&#8220;Did not Moses give you the Law?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He adds: <strong>&#8220;Yet none of you carries out the Law.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a devastating statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders prided themselves on defending Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet they ignored the very Law they claimed to protect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They condemned Jesus for healing on the Sabbath while secretly plotting murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sixth Commandment forbids murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fourth Commandment governs the Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their zeal for one command caused them to violate another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legalism often loses sight of God&#8217;s larger purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-you-seek-to-kill-me\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You Seek to Kill Me&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd responds: <strong>&#8220;You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many pilgrims from outside Jerusalem genuinely do not know about the leaders&#8217; growing hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John allows readers to see the tragic irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd unknowingly denies the very conspiracy already developing behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus knows the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders know the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd remains unaware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reminds us once again of Christ&#8217;s perfect knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing escapes Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-circumcision-on-the-sabbath\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Circumcision on the Sabbath<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus presents a brilliant argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Law required circumcision on the eighth day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the eighth day fell on the Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders permitted circumcision because obeying God&#8217;s covenant took priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If one part of the body may be healed on the Sabbath through circumcision&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why should restoring an entire person be considered sinful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His argument exposes their inconsistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had become more committed to preserving tradition than understanding God&#8217;s heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sabbath was given to bless humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healing fulfills that purpose rather than violating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-judge-with-righteous-judgment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Judge With Righteous Judgment&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the Bible&#8217;s most misunderstood commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many quote Jesus saying: &#8220;Judge not.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet here Jesus commands: <strong>&#8220;Judge.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is not whether we make judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The issue is how.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Superficial judgment evaluates appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Righteous judgment evaluates according to God&#8217;s truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders judged Jesus by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">His hometown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">His education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">His appearance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">His association with ordinary people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God evaluates according to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church must learn to do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-truth-and-the-human-heart\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Truth and the Human Heart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus repeatedly demonstrates that the greatest barrier to truth is not a lack of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an unwilling heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those determined to preserve their own authority continually find reasons to reject Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those willing to obey increasingly recognize His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue has never been merely information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has always been transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>amazement \u2192 revelation \u2192 confrontation \u2192 invitation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus exposes false assumptions while inviting people to evaluate Him in light of God&#8217;s truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Teacher sent from heaven,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the perfect revealer of the Father,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the obedient Son,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the righteous Judge,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the fulfillment of the Law of Moses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-religious-leaders\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Religious Leaders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They marvel at Jesus&#8217; wisdom while refusing to acknowledge its divine source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-crowd\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Crowd<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They remain divided, struggling to understand both Jesus&#8217; teaching and the leaders&#8217; hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He patiently reveals the Father&#8217;s truth while exposing superficial judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-true-wisdom-comes-from-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. True Wisdom Comes From God<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education is valuable, but <strong>divine truth<\/strong> ultimately comes through God&#8217;s revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-obedience-opens-the-door-to-deeper-understanding\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.
