No.

Most conservative evangelical scholars believe the event itself is authentic and reflects the character and teaching of Jesus. The early church was familiar with this account, and it appears in several ancient sources. The primary question is not whether the event happened, but whether John originally included it at this exact location in his Gospel.

Because of that uncertainty, we should be careful not to build major doctrines solely upon this passage.

At the same time, nothing in this account contradicts the rest of Scripture.

In fact, everything Jesus does here beautifully harmonizes with His character throughout the Gospels.

He consistently:

upholds God’s holiness,

exposes hypocrisy,

extends grace to repentant sinners,

and calls people to transformed lives.

Whether this account originally stood here or circulated independently before being preserved in John’s Gospel, it faithfully reflects the Jesus revealed throughout the New Testament.

With that understanding, we can study it with confidence while appreciating the remarkable picture of Christ it provides.

The Audience John Is Writing To

The Feast of Booths has ended.

The crowds disperse.

The religious leaders have failed repeatedly to arrest Jesus.

Yet their hostility continues growing.

Early the next morning, Jesus returns to the Temple.

People gather around Him.

He begins teaching.

Then the atmosphere changes.

The religious leaders interrupt His teaching by dragging a woman into the center of the crowd.

They care little about the woman herself.

She has become a weapon.

Their real target is Jesus.

John presents one of the most dramatic confrontations in the Gospels.

The issue appears to be adultery.

In reality, the issue is Christ’s identity.

Can He uphold God’s Law while extending mercy?

Only Jesus perfectly accomplishes both.

John 7:53 – 8:11 NASB
[Everyone went to his home. Deuteronomy 22:22).

Yet only the woman appears.

This immediately exposes the hypocrisy of the religious leaders.

Their concern is not justice.

It is trapping Jesus.

The woman has become a means to an end.

Religion without compassion often treats people as objects.

Jesus never does.

Even before speaking to her, He restores her dignity simply by refusing to participate in their manipulation.

A Carefully Constructed Trap

The leaders believe they have created an impossible situation.

If Jesus rejects stoning, He appears to reject Moses.

If He endorses it, He appears to contradict His own ministry of mercy.

More importantly, He could be accused before the Romans.

The trap assumes justice and mercy cannot coexist.

Only Jesus demonstrates that both can be perfectly upheld.

The Cross will ultimately become the greatest demonstration of that truth.

Why Did Jesus Write on the Ground?

John never tells us.

Countless theories have been suggested.

Perhaps He wrote the accusers’ sins.

Perhaps He wrote passages from the Law.

And perhaps He simply refused to participate in their frenzy.

The truth is: We do not know.

John’s silence may actually be intentional.

The emphasis is not what Jesus wrote.

It is what Jesus said.

Speculation should never overshadow the clear teaching of the passage.

“He Who Is Without Sin”

Jesus does not say: “Only sinless people may judge.”

Scripture clearly teaches that human courts possess legitimate authority.

Rather, Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of these particular accusers.

The Law required truthful witnesses.

Honest motives.

Equal justice.

These men possessed none of those things.

They were using God’s Law while violating its heart.

Jesus forces each accuser to examine himself before condemning another.

The result is silence.

When the Witnesses Walked Away, the Case Collapsed

Under the Mosaic Law, a person could not be executed on the testimony of a single individual.

God required two or three witnesses to establish a capital offense (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15), and those very witnesses were required to cast the first stones (Deuteronomy 17:7). This protected justice by ensuring that accusations carried personal responsibility and could not be made carelessly or maliciously.

When Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her,”

He was not dismissing the Law.

He was calling the witnesses to uphold it with integrity.

As one accuser after another walked away, the legal case itself unraveled.

The witnesses abandoned their testimony.

Without qualified witnesses willing to stand behind their accusation, there was no lawful basis for carrying out the sentence prescribed by Moses.

This reveals something remarkable.

Jesus did not set God’s Law aside.

He upheld it more faithfully than the very men who claimed to defend it.

The only person left who truly possessed both the legal and moral authority to condemn the woman was Jesus Himself.

He alone was without sin.

He alone perfectly fulfilled the Law.

Yet instead of throwing the first stone, He chose to extend mercy.

Not because her sin was insignificant.

But because He Himself would soon bear the condemnation her sin deserved at the Cross.

In that moment, justice was not ignored.

It was postponed until Calvary, where the holy Judge would willingly become the sacrifice for guilty sinners.

One by One

John notes that they leave beginning with the oldest.

Why?

Perhaps age brought greater awareness of personal sin.

Perhaps the older leaders understood more quickly that Jesus had exposed them.

Whatever the reason, the scene is powerful.

The crowd that arrived eager to condemn quietly disappears.

Only two people remain.

The guilty woman.

And the only truly sinless Man.

“Neither Do I Condemn You”

These words have often been misunderstood.

Jesus is not declaring the woman innocent.

She is guilty.

Nor is He denying the seriousness of adultery.

Instead, He is revealing His mission.

Earlier John wrote: “God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” (John 3:17)

Jesus does not ignore justice.

He postpones its execution because He Himself will soon bear it.

The Cross makes this statement possible.

Grace is never free.

It is purchased.

“Go and Sin No transformation.

He does not say: “Your sin doesn’t matter.”

He says: “Sin no more.”

This is neither legalism nor permissiveness.

It is grace producing holiness.

True forgiveness never encourages continued rebellion.

It empowers a new way of living.

Jesus accepts the sinner.

He refuses to affirm the sin.

This perfect balance continues defining Christian ethics today.

Grace Without Truth?

Modern culture often separates grace and truth.

Some emphasize acceptance while avoiding holiness.

Others emphasize holiness while forgetting mercy.

Jesus does neither.

He neither excuses adultery nor destroys the adulterer.

He exposes hypocrisy.

Extends mercy.

Calls for repentance.

This is exactly what John declared in chapter one:

Jesus came full of grace and truth.

This story beautifully illustrates class="wp-block-paragraph">Although the Cross is never mentioned explicitly, it stands behind every word Jesus speaks.

How can a holy Judge say, “Neither do I condemn you”?

Only because one day He Himself will stand condemned in her place.

Justice is not ignored.

It is transferred.

Grace is not sentimental.

It is costly.

The One who refuses to throw a stone will soon carry a cross.

<hr
