{"id":4193,"date":"2026-09-04T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4193"},"modified":"2026-08-30T13:54:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T17:54:53","slug":"the-truth-will-set-you-free-john-8-31-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-truth-will-set-you-free-john-8-31-47\/","title":{"rendered":"The Truth Will Set You Free: True Discipleship and True Freedom (John 8:31\u201347)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most surprising details in this passage appears in its opening sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John tells us: <strong>&#8220;So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That statement should make us pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not addressing hostile outsiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is speaking to people who have, in some sense, believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet as the conversation unfolds, many of these same listeners become increasingly resistant until, by the end of the chapter, they are attempting to stone Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally records this progression to help readers understand an essential truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a kind of belief that begins with interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another kind of belief that continues in faithful obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between the two is the subject of this passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 8:31-47 NASB<br>So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, \u201cIf you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.\u201d They answered Him, \u201cWe are Abraham\u2019s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, \u2018You will become free\u2019?\u201d Jesus answered them, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. Now the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free. I know that you are Abraham\u2019s descendants; yet you are seeking to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. I speak of the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.\u201d They answered and said to Him, \u201cAbraham is our father.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cIf you are Abraham\u2019s children, do the deeds of Abraham. But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. You are doing the deeds of your father.\u201d They said to Him, \u201cWe were not born as a result of sexual immorality; we have one Father: God.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cIf God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from God and am here; for I have not even come on My own, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I say the truth, you do not believe Me. Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the nature of true discipleship, genuine freedom, spiritual slavery, and the marks of belonging to God&#8217;s family.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Truth,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Liberator,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the true Son,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the One who alone frees sinners from the bondage of sin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage contains one of the most quoted verses in the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet it is also one of the most frequently misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jews who had believed Him<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The broader crowd listening in the Temple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells those who have believed: <strong>&#8220;If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continues: <strong>&#8220;You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His listeners object immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reply: <strong>&#8220;We are Abraham&#8217;s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus responds by exposing a deeper slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explains that slaves do not remain permanently in the household.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only the Son does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes another remarkable promise: <strong>&#8220;If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus acknowledges that they are physical descendants of Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet He explains that their actions reveal a different spiritual condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of responding as Abraham did, they seek to kill the One who speaks God&#8217;s truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation grows increasingly direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells them that their actions reveal the identity of their true spiritual father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-true-freedom\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of True Freedom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-belief-that-continues\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belief That Continues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins with a condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;If you continue in My word&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that He does not say: &#8220;If you once agreed with Me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or: &#8220;If you once attended.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or: &#8220;If you once made a profession.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence of genuine discipleship is perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean believers earn salvation by endurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, endurance reveals authentic faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel, true believers continue to abide in Christ because Christ continually preserves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fruit does not produce the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reveals the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-continuing-in-his-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continuing in His Word<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word translated <strong>continue<\/strong> is one of John&#8217;s favorite expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsewhere it is translated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">abide,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">remain,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">dwell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipleship is not a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a lifelong relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing in Christ&#8217;s Word means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">trusting it,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">obeying it,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">allowing it to shape every area of life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is far more than reading Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is allowing Scripture to read us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-knowing-the-truth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knowing the Truth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;You will know the truth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth here is not merely information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In John&#8217;s Gospel, truth is ultimately personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later Jesus will declare: <strong>&#8220;I am the truth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To know the truth is therefore to know Christ Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Christian life is not built upon mastering theological concepts alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is built upon growing communion with the One who perfectly embodies truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-truth-will-set-you-free\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Truth Will Set You Free<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps no verse is quoted more frequently apart from its context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people assume Jesus is speaking about intellectual freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educational freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The context makes His meaning unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is speaking about freedom from sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest prison is not external oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is internal bondage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person may be politically free while remaining enslaved spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Christ breaks those chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-we-have-never-been-enslaved\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;We Have Never Been Enslaved&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd&#8217;s response is astonishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel had experienced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">slavery in Egypt,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">captivity in Babylon,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">domination by Persia,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">rule under Greece,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and Roman occupation at that very moment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can they say they have never been enslaved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not discussing political history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither are they.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They appeal to their covenant identity as descendants of Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They believe their heritage guarantees spiritual security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus exposes the error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious heritage can never replace personal faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-slavery-to-sin\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slavery to Sin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;Everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the universality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin is not merely something we occasionally do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from Christ, it is a master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity often believes freedom means doing whatever we desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals a painful reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from God, our desires themselves have become enslaved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True freedom is not the ability to sin without restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the ability to obey God with joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-son-and-the-slave\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Son and the Slave<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus introduces an illustration from ancient households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A slave possessed no permanent inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A son belonged forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast is profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religion may produce servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Christ produces sons and daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel does not merely improve our standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It changes our family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The believer is adopted into God&#8217;s household forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-free-indeed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Free Indeed&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not promise partial freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says: <strong>&#8220;You will be free indeed.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is freedom at the deepest level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">from sin&#8217;s penalty,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">from sin&#8217;s dominion,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">from condemnation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and ultimately, one day, from sin&#8217;s very presence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel addresses humanity&#8217;s greatest bondage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-children-of-abraham\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children of Abraham<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus acknowledges: <strong>&#8220;I know that you are Abraham&#8217;s descendants.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physically, this is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spiritually, another question remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, true children resemble their father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham believed God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He welcomed God&#8217;s messengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He rejoiced in God&#8217;s promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells the crowd that their actions reveal a different spiritual family resemblance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genealogy cannot substitute for faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes one of John&#8217;s most searching themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God has children not merely by birth but by new birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-they-cannot-hear\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why They Cannot Hear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;My word has no place in you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is not hearing with the ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is receiving with the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Gospel, people hear Jesus&#8217; voice physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only believers hear Him spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same words soften some hearts and harden others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference lies not in Christ&#8217;s message but in the listener&#8217;s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-freedom-redefined\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Freedom Redefined<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world defines freedom as autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doing whatever we want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture defines freedom very differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom is becoming what we were created to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fish is free in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bird is free in the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human beings are truly free only when living in fellowship with their Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin promises freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It always produces slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ appears to demand surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He always produces freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>invitation \u2192 revelation \u2192 confrontation \u2192 exposure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus patiently leads His listeners from superficial confidence to the deeper reality of their spiritual condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Truth,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Son who liberates,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the giver of genuine freedom,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the One who alone can break the bondage of sin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-those-who-initially-believed\"
