{"id":4196,"date":"2026-09-05T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4196"},"modified":"2026-08-30T14:23:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T18:23:49","slug":"before-abraham-was-i-am-john-8-44-59","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/before-abraham-was-i-am-john-8-44-59\/","title":{"rendered":"Before Abraham Was, I AM: The Climactic Revelation of Christ&#8217;s Deity (John 8:44\u201359)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now brings one of the longest public conversations in his Gospel to its dramatic conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion has steadily intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It began with questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moved to disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it reaches open hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is no longer simply whether Jesus is a prophet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or even whether He is the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question now becomes unmistakable: <strong>Is Jesus claiming to be God?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants there to be no uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage contains one of the clearest declarations of Christ&#8217;s deity in the entire Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reaction of the religious leaders proves they understood exactly what Jesus meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 8:44-59 NASB<br>You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I say the truth, you do not believe Me. Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.\u201d The Jews answered and said to Him, \u201cDo we not rightly say that You are a Samaritan, and You have a demon?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cI do not have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. But I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone follows My word, he will never see death.\u201d The Jews said to Him, \u201cNow we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, \u2018If anyone follows My word, he will never taste of death.\u2019 You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cIf I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, \u2018He is our God\u2019; and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you; but I do know Him, and I follow His word. Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.\u201d So the Jews said to Him, \u201cYou are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.\u201d Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and left the temple grounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>the spiritual source of unbelief, the identity of Jesus as the eternal I AM, and the contrast between Abraham&#8217;s faith and the religious leaders&#8217; rejection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the eternal Son,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the covenant God of Israel,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the giver of eternal life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the One who existed before Abraham.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage forms one of the theological summits of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Jewish religious leaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The crowd listening in the Temple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus continues responding to those claiming Abraham as their father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explains that if they truly belonged to Abraham, they would imitate Abraham&#8217;s faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, they seek to kill the One who tells them the truth from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells them: <strong>&#8220;You are doing the deeds of your father.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders insist: <strong>&#8220;We have one Father: God.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers: <strong>&#8220;If God were your Father, you would love Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He makes one of the strongest statements in the Gospels: <strong>&#8220;You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus declares that whoever keeps His word will never see death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders accuse Him of being demon-possessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ask: <strong>&#8220;Are You greater than our father Abraham?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus explains that Abraham rejoiced to see His day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd responds: <strong>&#8220;You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers: <strong>&#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders immediately pick up stones to execute Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus departs from the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-great-i-am\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of the Great I AM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-spiritual-parentage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spiritual Parentage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion begins with Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders proudly claim him as their father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus distinguishes between physical ancestry and spiritual resemblance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True children resemble their father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham believed God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham welcomed God&#8217;s revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Abraham rejoiced in God&#8217;s promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders reject God&#8217;s revelation standing before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their actions reveal another spiritual influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, family resemblance is measured by character more than genealogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest question is not: &#8220;Who are my ancestors?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is: &#8220;Whom do I resemble?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-your-father-the-devil\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Your Father the Devil&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These words sound shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Jesus is not engaging in personal insults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is making a theological diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The devil is characterized by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">murder,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">lies,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">rebellion against God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders seek murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reject truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they oppose God&#8217;s Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their actions mirror the devil&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is exposing the spiritual source behind their unbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reminds us that the conflict surrounding Christ is never merely intellectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-they-cannot-hear\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why They Cannot Hear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, inability appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is not language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is the heart&#8217;s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin deafens humanity to God&#8217;s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only God&#8217;s grace opens ears to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This continues the same theme introduced throughout John&#8217;s Gospel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Father draws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spirit gives life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-if-anyone-keeps-my-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;If Anyone Keeps My Word&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus promises: <strong>&#8220;If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders immediately misunderstand Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Nicodemus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Samaritan woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bread of Life discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They interpret Jesus physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus speaks spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physical death still comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But believers never experience eternal separation from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death itself has lost its final victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-abraham-rejoiced\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abraham Rejoiced<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most beautiful statement before the climax is this: <strong>&#8220;Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does Jesus mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Abraham&#8217;s life, God repeatedly revealed promises concerning the coming Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Genesis 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genesis 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particularly on Mount Moriah, when God provided the ram in place of Isaac, Abraham glimpsed the coming provision of God&#8217;s ultimate Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says Abraham saw beyond the immediate event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He anticipated the day of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father of Israel looked forward with joy to the Savior standing before his descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How tragic that Abraham recognized by faith what many of his own descendants rejected by sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-before-abraham-was\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before Abraham Was&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the grammar carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does <strong>not<\/strong> say: &#8220;Before Abraham was, I was.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That alone would have declared preexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead He says: <strong>&#8220;Before Abraham was, I AM.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast is deliberate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham <strong>came into existence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus simply <strong>is<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John uses different verbs intentionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham had a beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He exists eternally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not poor grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is profound theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-am\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I AM&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here John reaches one of the greatest moments in his Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus uses the divine name revealed to Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exodus 3: <strong>&#8220;I AM WHO I AM.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connection is unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not merely claim to predate Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He claims the eternal identity of Yahweh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The God who spoke from the burning bush now speaks from the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has been preparing readers for this moment since chapter one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eternal Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bread of Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the veil is completely removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus openly identifies Himself with the covenant God of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-crowd-s-response\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Crowd&#8217;s Response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reaction confirms they understood perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not ask for clarification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not debate grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they pick up stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Leviticus prescribed stoning for blasphemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Jesus were merely claiming old age, such a response would make no sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders understood exactly what He claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They rejected it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, the very people defending God&#8217;s honor attempted to stone God incarnate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus-hid-himself\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Hid Himself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John simply says: <strong>&#8220;Jesus hid Himself and went out of the Temple.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, His hour had not yet come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same God who passed through the midst of Israel in the wilderness now passes unharmed through the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one arrests Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one stones Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History remains under the Father&#8217;s sovereign control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross will come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But only at the appointed hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-john-s-literary-masterpiece\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">John&#8217;s Literary Masterpiece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider how beautifully John has structured these chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus declares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">I am the Bread of Life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the Light of the World.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Before Abraham was&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I AM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declarations steadily increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each reveals more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until the divine name itself is spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything since John 1 has been leading up to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word who was with God&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Word who was God&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now openly identifies Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>confrontation <\/strong>to revelation to worship to<strong> rejection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clearest revelation of Christ&#8217;s identity produces the strongest opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2
