{"id":4199,"date":"2026-09-06T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4199"},"modified":"2026-08-30T14:46:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T18:46:53","slug":"jesus-heals-the-man-born-blind-john-9-1-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/jesus-heals-the-man-born-blind-john-9-1-41\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind: The Light Gives Sight (John 9:1\u201341)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally places this miracle immediately after Jesus declares: <strong>&#8220;I am the Light of the world.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is no accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel, Jesus&#8217; miracles serve as visible illustrations of His teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has just claimed to be the Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now John shows us what happens when the Light shines into darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet this miracle contains an unexpected reversal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blind man gradually begins to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders, who assume they already see perfectly, become increasingly blind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of the chapter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blind man worships Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders reject Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John presents one of the greatest living parables in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle of physical sight becomes a picture of spiritual salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 9:1-41 NASB<br>As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, \u201cRabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cIt was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.\u201d When He had said this, He spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, and said to him, \u201cGo, wash in the pool of Siloam\u201d (which is translated, Sent). So he left and washed, and came back seeing. So the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, \u201cIs this not the one who used to sit and beg?\u201d Others were saying, \u201cThis is he,\u201d still others were saying, \u201cNo, but he is like him.\u201d The man himself kept saying, \u201cI am the one.\u201d So they were saying to him, \u201cHow then were your eyes opened?\u201d He answered, \u201cThe Man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, \u2018Go to Siloam and wash\u2019; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.\u201d And they said to him, \u201cWhere is He?\u201d He said, \u201cI do not know.\u201d They brought the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees. Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, \u201cHe applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.\u201d Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, \u201cThis Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.\u201d But others were saying, \u201cHow can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?\u201d And there was dissension among them. So they said again to the man who was blind, \u201cWhat do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?\u201d And he said, \u201cHe is a prophet.\u201d The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, and they questioned them, saying, \u201cIs this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?\u201d His parents then answered and said, \u201cWe know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.\u201d His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already reached the decision that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be excommunicated from the synagogue. It was for this reason that his parents said, \u201cHe is of age; ask him.\u201d So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind, and said to him, \u201cGive glory to God; we know that this Man is a sinner.\u201d He then answered, \u201cWhether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.\u201d So they said to him, \u201cWhat did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?\u201d He answered them, \u201cI told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?\u201d They spoke abusively to him and said, \u201cYou are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this Man, we do not know where He is from.\u201d The man answered and said to them, \u201cWell, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes! We know that God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.\u201d They answered him, \u201cYou were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?\u201d So they put him out. Jesus heard that they had put him out, and upon finding him, He said, \u201cDo you believe in the Son of Man?\u201d He answered by saying, \u201cAnd who is He, Sir, that I may believe in Him?\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cYou have both seen Him, and He is the One who is talking with you.\u201d And he said, \u201cI believe, Lord.\u201d And he worshiped Him. And Jesus said, \u201cFor judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.\u201d Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, \u201cWe are not blind too, are we?\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cIf you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, \u2018We see,\u2019 your sin remains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Jesus as the Light of the World, the purpose of suffering, spiritual blindness, and the transformation that comes through faith.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Light of the World,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Creator,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the compassionate Savior,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the giver of both physical and spiritual sight,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the righteous Judge who exposes the blindness of unbelief.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chapter beautifully illustrates the entire Gospel in narrative form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The man born blind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The neighbors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The man&#8217;s parents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Pharisees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Jesus passes by, He notices a man blind from birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples ask: <strong>&#8220;Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers: <strong>&#8220;It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then declares once again: <strong>&#8220;I am the Light of the world.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He spits on the ground, makes clay, places it upon the man&#8217;s eyes, and tells him: <strong>&#8220;Go, wash in the pool of Siloam.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man obeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He washes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He returns seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle astonishes everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neighbors debate whether he is the same man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pharisees interrogate him repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His parents fear the religious leaders and refuse to answer fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healed man boldly testifies about Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the Pharisees cast him out of the synagogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus seeks him, reveals Himself as the Son of Man, and receives the man&#8217;s worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Jesus declares: <strong>&#8220;For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-blindness-and-light\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Blindness and Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-who-sinned\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Sinned?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples ask a question many people still ask today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do people suffer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their assumptions reflect common Jewish thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If suffering exists, someone must have committed a particular sin causing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus rejects that simplistic explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does <strong>not<\/strong> mean suffering is unrelated to humanity&#8217;s fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All suffering ultimately exists because sin entered the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus denies that every individual hardship is the direct result of a specific personal sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He introduces another possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God can display His glory through suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This transforms the entire discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest question is not: &#8220;Who is to blame?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greater question becomes: <strong>&#8220;What is God accomplishing?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus-saw-the-man\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Saw the Man<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice something beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blind man never cries out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never asks for healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never seeks Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus notices him first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reflects the pattern throughout John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grace begins with God&#8217;s initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as Jesus sought the Samaritan woman&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disabled man at Bethesda&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now He seeks the blind man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Before anyone seeks Christ&#8230; Christ has already begun seeking them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-creator-at-work-again\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Creator at Work Again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus spits upon the ground and makes clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture never gives a direct explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the imagery immediately recalls Genesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God formed Adam from the dust of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the Creator once again works with earth to restore what creation had lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This miracle is not merely healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is new creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One who formed human eyes in the beginning now restores eyes that never functioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-pool-of-siloam\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pool of Siloam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John alone explains that <strong>Siloam means &#8220;Sent.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This detail is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the Gospel, Jesus repeatedly identifies Himself as the One sent by the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the blind man receives sight by washing in the pool called &#8220;Sent.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John is almost certainly drawing attention to a deeper reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man receives sight through obedience connected with the One whom the Father has sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle itself points beyond the pool to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-obedience-before-sight\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obedience Before Sight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man receives no visible evidence before obeying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine walking through Jerusalem with mud covering your eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet he obeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only afterward does he see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reflects the pattern of faith throughout John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith often walks before it fully understands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obedience becomes the pathway through which God&#8217;s work is experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-growing-understanding\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growing Understanding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most beautiful features of this chapter is watching the man&#8217;s understanding grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first he simply says: <strong>&#8220;The man called Jesus.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later he says: <strong>&#8220;He is a prophet.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later still: <strong>&#8220;If this man were not from God&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally he confesses: <strong>&#8220;Lord, I believe.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he worships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally portrays salvation as growing revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man&#8217;s physical sight arrives instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His spiritual sight develops progressively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more he responds to the truth he has received, the more Christ reveals Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-blindness-of-the-pharisees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Blindness of the Pharisees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite progression occurs among the religious leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence becomes increasingly clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet their blindness deepens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only people in the chapter who confidently claim to see are the ones who remain spiritually blind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pride often blinds more effectively than ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest obstacle to salvation is frequently the belief that we already possess everything we need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-parents-fear\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Parents&#8217; Fear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John records another tragic detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man&#8217;s parents refuse to speak openly because they fear being expelled from the synagogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear of people repeatedly appears throughout John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some recognize Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet remain silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Human approval becomes a powerful obstacle to public faith.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John quietly challenges every reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whose approval matters most?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God&#8217;s?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or people&#8217;s?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus-seeks-him-again\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Seeks Him Again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the religious leaders cast the man out&#8230; Jesus finds him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is profoundly beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world rejects him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Savior seeks him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The synagogue excludes him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ welcomes him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, losing everything for Christ always leads to discovering something infinitely greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man loses his place in the synagogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gains eternal fellowship with the Son of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-worship\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the climax of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healed man says: <strong>&#8220;Lord, I believe.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then: <strong>&#8220;He worshiped Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John records this without correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Jesus deserves worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, angels refuse worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prophets refuse worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apostles refuse worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus receives it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes another unmistakable testimony to His divine identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3
