{"id":4203,"date":"2026-09-07T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4203"},"modified":"2026-08-30T15:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T19:01:14","slug":"i-am-the-good-shepherd-john-10-1-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/i-am-the-good-shepherd-john-10-1-21\/","title":{"rendered":"I Am the Good Shepherd: The Shepherd Who Lays Down His Life (John 10:1\u201321)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not begin a new subject in chapter ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation continues directly from chapter nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pharisees have just cast a healed man out of the synagogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders\u2014who should have cared for God&#8217;s people like faithful shepherds\u2014have instead abused the very sheep entrusted to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus now explains what has just happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healed man was not rejected for failing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was rejected because the shepherds of Israel had become false shepherds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against that backdrop, Jesus makes two of His most beloved declarations: <strong>&#8220;I am the door of the sheep.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And: <strong>&#8220;I am the Good Shepherd.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To fully understand these statements, we must remember that Israel had been waiting for centuries for God to fulfill an extraordinary promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He Himself would come and shepherd His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 10:1-21 NASB<br>\u201cTruly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. But the one who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he puts all his own sheep outside, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. However, a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.\u201d Jesus told them this figure of speech, but they did not understand what the things which He was saying to them meant. So Jesus said to them again, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All those who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly. \u201cI am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock. He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me, just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become one flock, with one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it back. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. This commandment I received from My Father.\u201d Dissension occurred again among the Jews because of these words. Many of them were saying, \u201cHe has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?\u201d Others were saying, \u201cThese are not the words of one who is demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of those who are blind, can it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Jesus as the promised Shepherd of God&#8217;s people, the Door of salvation, the giver of abundant life, and the sacrificial Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Door,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Good Shepherd,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Psalm 23,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Ezekiel 34,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Shepherd-King promised throughout the Old Testament.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the richest Messianic passages in the entire Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Pharisees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The crowds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins by describing a sheepfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True shepherds enter through the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thieves climb over the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sheep recognize the shepherd&#8217;s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They follow him because they know him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strangers cannot lead them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John tells us the listeners fail to understand the illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus therefore explains it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First He declares: <strong>&#8220;I am the door of the sheep.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone entering through Him finds salvation, security, and pasture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He contrasts Himself with thieves who come: <strong>&#8220;Only to steal and kill and destroy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He deepens the illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I am the Good Shepherd.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike hired workers, the Good Shepherd willingly lays down His life for the sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knows His sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His sheep know Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He also has other sheep not yet in this fold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They too will hear His voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will become: <strong>&#8220;One flock with one Shepherd.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus concludes by explaining that He lays down His life voluntarily and takes it up again through the authority given by the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd again becomes divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some accuse Him of being demon-possessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others recognize that His words and miracles cannot come from a demon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-shepherd\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of the Shepherd<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-ezekiel-34-the-background\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ezekiel 34: The Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No Old Testament chapter stands more prominently behind John 10 than Ezekiel 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There God condemns Israel&#8217;s shepherds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of feeding the sheep, they fed themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of protecting the weak, they exploited them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And instead of seeking the lost, they scattered the flock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then God made an astonishing promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: <strong>&#8220;I Myself will search for My sheep.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God did not merely promise to send another shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He promised to come Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John 10 is the fulfillment of that promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not simply another leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is God keeping His own promise to shepherd His people personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-psalm-23-comes-alive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psalm 23 Comes Alive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every reader naturally thinks of Psalm 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lord is my Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David spoke those words a thousand years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the Shepherd stands before His sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He gives life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provides pasture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, He prepares a table through His own sacrificial death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John presents Jesus not merely as a shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is <strong>the Shepherd<\/strong> David celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-am-the-door\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I Am the Door&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This image often surprises readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can Jesus be both Shepherd and Door?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient shepherds often slept across the entrance of the sheepfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their own body became the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing exited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without passing through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus fulfills that role perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shepherd who leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Door through whom salvation comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No wolf reaches the sheep without first passing Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No sheep enters God&#8217;s flock apart from Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-thieves\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Thieves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who are the thieves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the immediate context, Jesus is referring primarily to Israel&#8217;s false spiritual leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They burdened God&#8217;s people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abused their authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rejected the Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than bringing life, they brought fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout history, every false teacher shares the same pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ultimately point people toward themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Good Shepherd always points people toward the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-abundant-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Abundant Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most misunderstood promises in Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some interpret this as prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Material success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The context points elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abundant life is life filled with God Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is eternal life beginning now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communion with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The abundance Jesus offers cannot be measured by possessions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is measured by relationship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-is-jesus-the-good-shepherd\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is Jesus the &#8220;Good&#8221; Shepherd?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek word means more than morally good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It carries the idea of beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is the Shepherd in whom shepherding reaches its perfect expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike every previous shepherd in Israel&#8217;s history, He never fails His flock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-lays-down-his-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Lays Down His Life&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five times in this discourse Jesus repeats this truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repetition matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross is not an interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice something remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient shepherds occasionally died defending sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus dies intentionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not accidentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not tragically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voluntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His death is not the Shepherd&#8217;s failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the very proof that He is the Good Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-know-my-own\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I Know My Own&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps no sentence brings greater comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;I know My own.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merely: &#8220;I know about them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And their wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, God&#8217;s knowledge always implies covenant love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shepherd&#8217;s care is deeply personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No sheep disappears into the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-other-sheep\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Sheep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then makes a stunning announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I have other sheep&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The immediate reference is to the Gentiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now, God&#8217;s covenant people had largely consisted of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus now reveals God&#8217;s eternal plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One flock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel will extend to every nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This fulfills God&#8217;s promise to Abraham that all families of the earth would be blessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-lay-it-down-i-take-it-up-again\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">I Lay It Down&#8230; I Take It Up Again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;No one has taken it away from Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross was never beyond His control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pilate did not ultimately take His life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sanhedrin did not take His life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rome did not take His life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus willingly gave it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more astonishing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says He possesses authority to take it up again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of Scripture&#8217;s clearest declarations of Christ&#8217;s divine authority over death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only God possesses such authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-shepherd-and-the-blind-man\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shepherd and the Blind Man<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember where this conversation began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man cast out by false shepherds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Found by the true Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has intentionally connected the two The Church Is One Flock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every believer belongs to the same Shepherd regardless of background or nationality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps no image in Scripture has brought greater comfort than that of the Good Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheep are not admired for their intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or their independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They survive because they remain near their shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is precisely Jesus&#8217; point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Christian life is not sustained by self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is sustained by staying close to the Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what Jesus never says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never promises that wolves will disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or valleys will cease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or dangers will vanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He promises something infinitely better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shepherd Himself will never leave His flock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He walks ahead of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calls them by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protects them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeds them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when necessary&#8230; <strong>He lays down His own life so that they might live.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every earthly shepherd eventually dies, leaving the flock behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus died <strong>for<\/strong> the flock&#8230;
