{"id":4219,"date":"2026-09-09T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4219"},"modified":"2026-09-05T10:31:22","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T14:31:22","slug":"the-death-of-lazarus-john-11-1-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-death-of-lazarus-john-11-1-16\/","title":{"rendered":"The Death of Lazarus: When God Delays for Greater Glory (John 11:1\u201316)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now begins the final and greatest sign before the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything since Cana has been moving toward this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water became wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official&#8217;s son was healed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disabled man walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five thousand were fed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blind man saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now death itself will be confronted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before resurrection comes&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally begins this story not with a miracle, but with unanswered prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That alone should capture our attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every believer has experienced seasons when God seemed slow to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reveals that those moments are often the stage upon which God displays His greatest glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 11:1-16 NASB<br>Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. And it was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, \u201cLord, behold, he whom You love is sick.\u201d But when Jesus heard this, He said, \u201cThis sickness is not meant for death, but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.\u201d (Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. Then after this He said to the disciples, \u201cLet\u2019s go to Judea again.\u201d The disciples said to Him, \u201cRabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and yet You are going there again?\u201d Jesus replied, \u201cAre there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.\u201d This He said, and after this He said to them, \u201cOur friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.\u201d The disciples then said to Him, \u201cLord, if he has fallen asleep, he will come out of it.\u201d Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about actual sleep. So Jesus then said to them plainly, \u201cLazarus died, and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let\u2019s go to him.\u201d Therefore Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, \u201cLet\u2019s also go, so that we may die with Him!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Christ&#8217;s sovereign timing, His love for His people, and God&#8217;s purpose in allowing suffering before displaying His glory.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the loving Friend,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the sovereign Lord over time,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the One who never arrives late,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Son whose every action serves the Father&#8217;s glory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage teaches that divine delay is never divine neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Lazarus of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Mary of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Martha of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John introduces Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus becomes seriously ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sisters send word to Jesus: <strong>&#8220;Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not tell Jesus what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply place their need before Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus responds: <strong>&#8220;This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John then emphasizes something extraordinary: <strong>&#8220;Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately afterward we read something unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only after those two days does Jesus announce that they will return to Judea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples object because the religious leaders have recently tried to stone Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus replies that those who walk in the Father&#8217;s appointed time do not stumble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, He tells them plainly: <strong>&#8220;Lazarus is dead.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He adds: <strong>&#8220;I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-divine-delay\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Divine Delay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-he-whom-you-love\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;He Whom You Love&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sisters never appeal to their own worthiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They appeal to Jesus&#8217; love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is genuine faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their confidence rests not in themselves but in Christ&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Christian prayer ultimately rests upon the same foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We come because He is compassionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because we deserve an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-most-surprising-word-in-the-story\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Most Surprising Word in the Story<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John writes: <strong>&#8220;Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes one of the most unexpected words in the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;So&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because He loved them&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human logic expects: &#8220;He loved them, therefore He hurried.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John says: <strong>&#8220;He loved them, therefore He waited.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This completely reshapes how believers understand God&#8217;s delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love and delay are not opposites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes love chooses delay because immediate relief would accomplish something far smaller than God&#8217;s eternal purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-god-s-delays-are-not-god-s-denials\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">God&#8217;s Delays Are Not God&#8217;s Denials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus could have healed Lazarus from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had already done so with the official&#8217;s son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His delay is therefore intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is not ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God often answers prayers differently than we expect because He sees the entire story while we see only the present chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delay becomes the pathway to a greater revelation of Christ&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-for-the-glory-of-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;For the Glory of God&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This statement becomes the interpretive key for the entire chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything that follows serves one supreme purpose: <strong>The glory of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Notice that God&#8217;s glory and human good are not competing purposes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest blessing believers can receive is a deeper knowledge of Christ&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes that glory is revealed through healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes through waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes through resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>God always works toward the highest possible good for His people, even when that path includes temporary sorrow.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-walking-in-the-day\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walking in the Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says: <strong>&#8220;Are there not twelve hours in the day?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is not giving a lesson about timekeeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is teaching divine providence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every moment of His earthly ministry unfolds according to the Father&#8217;s timetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until His appointed hour arrives, no enemy can shorten His life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believers are likewise called to walk faithfully in the light God provides rather than fearfully imagining what might happen tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-lazarus-has-fallen-asleep\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Lazarus Has Fallen Asleep&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus initially describes death as sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture often uses this language for believers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sleep is temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It anticipates awakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not denying the reality of physical death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is redefining its permanence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who belong to Christ, death no longer possesses the final word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-am-glad\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I Am Glad&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most difficult sentence is this: <strong>&#8220;I am glad&#8230; that I was not there.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not glad that Lazarus suffered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor that Mary and Martha grieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is glad because what is about to happen will strengthen the faith of His disciples and reveal His glory in a way that healing alone never could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God&#8217;s greatest purposes often extend beyond the immediate crisis into the eternal formation of His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>love \u2192 concern \u2192 delay \u2192 trust \u2192 anticipation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apparent silence of God prepares the way for His greatest public revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the sovereign Lord over time,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the loving Friend,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the One who never acts outside the Father&#8217;s will,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Savior whose delays serve a greater glory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-mary-and-martha\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mary and Martha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They entrust their need to Jesus while waiting for His response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-disciples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Disciples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They struggle to understand both the danger and Jesus&#8217; purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He remains perfectly confident in the Father&#8217;s plan even when everyone else sees only tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-god-s-love-is-not-measured-by-immediate-answers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. God&#8217;s Love Is Not Measured by Immediate Answers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes His greatest expressions of love include waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-christ-is-never-late\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Christ Is Never Late<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His timing is always governed by the Father&#8217;s perfect wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-faith-trusts-god-s-character-during-seasons-of-silence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Faith Trusts God&#8217;s Character During Seasons of Silence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His delays never diminish His love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-god-s-highest-goal-is-his-glory\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. God&#8217;s Highest Goal Is His Glory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And His glory always brings the deepest good to His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-today-s-unanswered-prayer-may-become-tomorrow-s-greatest-testimony\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Today&#8217;s Unanswered Prayer May Become Tomorrow&#8217;s Greatest Testimony<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delay itself may be preparing a greater revelation of Christ than we can presently imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John begins the story of Lazarus with a truth every believer needs to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus loved them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing that follows changes that fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not the tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too often we measure God&#8217;s love by His speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the answer comes quickly, we assume He cares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If He waits, we wonder whether He has forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John destroys that misunderstanding forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest miracle in Jesus&#8217; public ministry begins with two days of silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence was never evidence of indifference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was preparation for glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of God&#8217;s greatest works begin where human hope appears to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary and Martha believed Jesus could heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were about to discover that He could do something infinitely greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same Lord still governs every delay in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His love has not diminished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His timing has not failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And His purposes have not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we cannot understand His schedule, we can still trust His heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The God who delayed at Bethany is the same God who emptied the tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When God seems slow to answer my prayers, will I interpret His silence through my circumstances, or will I interpret my circumstances through the unchanging love and sovereign wisdom of the Savior who never arrives one moment too late?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-suggested-reading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suggested Reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-stand-firm wp-block-embed-stand-firm\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zhUizuno6K\"><a href=\"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-rich-man-and-lazarus-luke-16-19-31\/\">The Rich Man and Lazarus: When Eternity Reverses Everything (Luke 16:19\u201331)<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
