{"id":4224,"date":"2026-09-10T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4224"},"modified":"2026-09-05T10:56:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T14:56:32","slug":"the-resurrection-and-the-life-john-11-17-27","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-resurrection-and-the-life-john-11-17-27\/","title":{"rendered":"Martha&#8217;s Faith and the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:17\u201327)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples have arrived at Bethany expecting sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now slows the narrative once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before anyone walks to the tomb&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Jesus weeps&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And before the miracle occurs&#8230; John records a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is characteristic of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle never stands alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is always preceded by revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus first teaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then He demonstrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle at Lazarus&#8217; tomb will illustrate what Jesus now declares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resurrection is not primarily an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 11:17-27 NASB<br>So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away; and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother. So then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed in the house. Martha then said to Jesus, \u201cLord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.\u201d Jesus said to her, \u201cYour brother will rise from the dead.\u201d Martha said to Him, \u201cI know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.\u201d Jesus said to her, \u201cI am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?\u201d She said to Him, \u201cYes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, and He who comes into the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life, the nature of biblical hope, and the invitation to personal faith in Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Resurrection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Lord over death,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the object of saving faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage contains one of the greatest <strong>&#8220;I AM&#8221;<\/strong> declarations in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Martha of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Mourners gathered in Bethany<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus arrives in Bethany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John tells us Lazarus has already been in the tomb for <strong>four days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many mourners have come from Jerusalem to comfort Martha and Mary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Martha hears Jesus is approaching, she immediately goes out to meet Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She says: <strong>&#8220;Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she adds: <strong>&#8220;Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus responds: <strong>&#8220;Your brother will rise again.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha answers with sound theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She believes in the future resurrection: <strong>&#8220;I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then makes one of the greatest declarations in the Bible: <strong>&#8220;I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes one of the most personal questions Jesus ever asks: <strong>&#8220;Do you believe this?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha responds with one of the strongest confessions in John&#8217;s Gospel: <strong>&#8220;Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-resurrection-and-the-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of the Resurrection and the Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-four-days\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four Days<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally records the duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus has been dead four days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does that matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By this point, no one could claim Lazarus had merely fainted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one could suggest he had been revived naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death was undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Jewish traditions even suggested that the soul remained near the body for three days before finally departing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether those traditions were correct or not, John emphasizes that every possibility of a natural explanation has disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle about to occur will be unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not rescue a dying man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He calls back one who is unquestionably dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-martha-runs-toward-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martha Runs Toward Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast between Martha and Mary is beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha immediately goes to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She brings her grief directly to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her opening words are filled with both sorrow and faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Lord, if You had been here&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not an accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a lament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She believes Jesus could have healed Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She simply cannot yet imagine what He is about to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith often begins exactly here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trusting Christ while still carrying unanswered questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-even-now\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Even Now&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most remarkable words Martha speaks are these: <strong>&#8220;Even now&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her hope has not died with her brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She does not know how Jesus will act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But she still trusts Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is mature faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biblical faith is not pretending to understand everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is to continue trusting God&#8217;s character even when His purposes remain hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-resurrection-was-already-expected\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resurrection Was Already Expected<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha&#8217;s belief in a future resurrection reflects orthodox Jewish theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Jews believed God would one day raise the righteous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus does not correct her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He expands her understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She believes in resurrection as a future event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals resurrection as a present Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the greatest shifts in all of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hope of believers is not merely a doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is Christ Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-i-am\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;I Am&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the fifth great metaphorical <strong>&#8220;I AM&#8221;<\/strong> statement in John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice once again that Jesus does not merely provide resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He is the Resurrection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He does not merely give life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He is the Life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every blessing believers receive ultimately flows from union with Christ Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is never merely the means to something greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is the greatest gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-resurrection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Resurrection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus completely transforms Martha&#8217;s understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is thinking chronologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Someday.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is thinking personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resurrection is not ultimately about a future calendar date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is about relationship with the One who possesses authority over death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Because Christ lives&#8230; His people will live.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resurrection is guaranteed because the Resurrection Himself stands before Martha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus addresses both believers who die before His return and believers who remain alive until that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physical death cannot destroy those united to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor can physical life apart from Christ produce eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life itself begins with Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has emphasized this from chapter one: <strong>&#8220;In Him was life.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus declares it personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-though-he-dies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Though He Dies&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sentence removes one common misunderstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christians still experience physical death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus never denies that reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He transforms its meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death is no longer the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become a doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The believer dies physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet continues living because eternal life has already begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-will-never-die\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Will Never Die&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this appears contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has just acknowledged physical death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now He says believers never die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer lies in distinguishing physical death from eternal separation from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believers may pass through physical death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They never experience eternal death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second death has lost its power because Christ has conquered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-do-you-believe-this\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Do You Believe This?&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything now becomes personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice Jesus does not ask: &#8220;Do you understand this completely?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks: <strong>&#8220;Do you believe this?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christianity ultimately centers on trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many mysteries remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is whether we trust the One revealing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every reader of John&#8217;s Gospel eventually hears this same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is impossible to remain merely an observer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ calls for a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-martha-s-great-confession\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martha&#8217;s Great Confession<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha&#8217;s confession deserves to stand beside Peter&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She declares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Jesus is the Christ.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jesus is the Son of God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Jesus is the One who came into the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remarkably, she makes this confession before seeing Lazarus raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her faith rests not upon the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It rests upon the Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of John&#8217;s central themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signs strengthen faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-conversation-before-the-miracle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Conversation Before the Miracle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally delays the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because he wants readers to understand something essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest hope in the story is not that Lazarus will live again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus will eventually die a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest hope is that Jesus is the Resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That truth changes every funeral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Christ lives, death itself has become temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>grief to hope to revelation to confession<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus gently leads Martha from sorrow toward one of the greatest declarations of faith in the New Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Resurrection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Israel&#8217;s hope,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the conqueror of death,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Son of God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-martha\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She brings both her grief and her faith to Jesus and responds with one of Scripture&#8217;s greatest confessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He patiently reveals that eternal hope is found not for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-faith-brings-honest-grief-to-christ\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Faith Brings Honest Grief to Christ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God welcomes both our tears and our trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-christian-hope-is-personal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Christian Hope Is Personal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our confidence rests in Jesus Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-death-is-no-longer-the-final-enemy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Death Is No Longer the Final Enemy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ has transformed its meaning forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-faith-often-grows-before-miracles-occur\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Faith Often Grows Before Miracles Occur<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha believed before she saw Lazarus leave the tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-every-believer-must-answer-christ-s-question\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Every Believer Must Answer Christ&#8217;s Question<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Do you believe this?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-reflection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few conversations in Scripture have comforted grieving believers more than this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha expected sympathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus offered hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not superficial optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not denial of pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hope rooted in His own identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that Jesus never tells Martha to stop grieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor does He immediately remove her sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, He reveals Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That remains God&#8217;s pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deepest answer to death is not an explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a Person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every funeral eventually confronts us with the same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens after death?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers not first with a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor with an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I am the resurrection and the life.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything changes because of those words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cemetery is no longer merely a place of endings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It becomes a place awaiting resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grief remains real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death remains painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But despair has lost its final claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Savior standing beside Martha still stands beside every believer today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One who called Lazarus from the tomb has promised to call every one of His people by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Because He lives&#8230;
