The Seventh Sign and the Defeat of Death (John 11:38\u201344)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything in John&#8217;s Gospel has been building toward this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has recorded six signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each one revealed another aspect of Christ&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now comes the seventh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greatest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final public sign before the Passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that Jesus does not perform this miracle privately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor in a distant village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor before only His disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He performs it before mourners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious observers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And people who would soon report what they had seen to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John understands that this miracle changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After this moment, the religious leaders no longer debate whether Jesus should die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They decide that He <strong>must<\/strong> die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, the miracle that most clearly reveals Jesus as the Author of Life becomes the event that seals the conspiracy to take His life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 11:38-44 NASB<br>So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, \u201cRemove the stone.\u201d Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, \u201cLord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.\u201d Jesus said to her, \u201cDid I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?\u201d So they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes, and said, \u201cFather, I thank You that You have heard Me. But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.\u201d And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, \u201cLazarus, come out!\u201d Out came the man who had died, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, \u201cUnbind him, and let him go.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Christ&#8217;s absolute authority over death, the glory of God revealed through resurrection, and the seventh climactic sign of John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the Resurrection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Lord of Life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Creator,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Ezekiel&#8217;s vision of new life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the sovereign King before whom death itself must obey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This miracle stands as the greatest public demonstration of Christ&#8217;s power before His own death and resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Lazarus of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Martha of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Mary of Bethany<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The mourners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deeply moved once again, Jesus approaches the tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a cave with a stone lying against its entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus commands: <strong>&#8220;Remove the stone.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus has been dead four days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She says: <strong>&#8220;Lord, by this time there will be a stench.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reminds her: <strong>&#8220;Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stone is removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus lifts His eyes toward heaven and prays aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He thanks the Father for always hearing Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explains that His prayer is spoken for the benefit of the crowd so they may believe the Father sent Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Jesus cries out with a loud voice: <strong>&#8220;Lazarus, come forth!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately the dead man emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His hands and feet remain wrapped with burial cloths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face is still covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus gives His final command: <strong>&#8220;Unbind him, and let him go.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death has been defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life stands before the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-seventh-sign\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of the Seventh Sign<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-stone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Stone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus begins with an unexpected command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Remove the stone.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Could He have removed it Himself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet He chooses to involve others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pattern appears throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God alone accomplishes the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet He graciously invites His people to participate in preparing the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd cannot raise Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they can remove the obstacle that hides the tomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church still serves in that role today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot regenerate hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Only Christ gives life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But we remove obstacles through faithful witness, prayer, and proclamation of the Gospel so people may hear the voice of the Savior.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-martha-s-honest-faith\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martha&#8217;s Honest Faith<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha&#8217;s objection is wonderfully human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She believes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet she also knows reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four days have passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decay has begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her statement reminds us that biblical faith never ignores reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply believes that God&#8217;s power is greater than reality as we presently understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Faith does not deny the impossible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It trusts the God for whom nothing is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-you-will-see-the-glory-of-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You Will See the Glory of God&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice once again John&#8217;s central theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle is not ultimately about Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is about God&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout John&#8217;s Gospel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Water becomes wine&#8230; That His glory might be seen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The blind receive sight&#8230; That His glory might be seen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Now the dead are raised&#8230; That His glory might be seen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God&#8217;s glory and humanity&#8217;s greatest good always meet in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 Corinthians 1:20 NASB<br>For as many as the promises of God are, in Him they are yes; therefore through Him also is our Amen to the glory of God through us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-does-jesus-pray\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does Jesus Pray?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has never needed to pray publicly before performing miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He tells us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Because of the people standing around&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prayer is not for the Father&#8217;s benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor for Jesus&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is for the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus allows them to hear His intimate relationship with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wants them to understand that everything He does flows from perfect unity with the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle about to occur is not independent power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the Father&#8217;s work revealed through the Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-lazarus-come-forth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Lazarus, Come Forth!&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many preachers have observed something both beautiful and humorous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus calls Lazarus by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why? Because had He simply commanded, &#8220;Come forth,&#8221; every grave might have emptied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While that observation goes beyond what John explicitly states, it highlights an important theological truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The voice calling Lazarus is the same voice that one day will call every believer from the grave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not merely reviving life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is exercising the authority He claimed in John 5: <strong>&#8220;All who are in the tombs will hear His voice.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus becomes the first public demonstration of that promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-death-obeys-its-creator\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Death Obeys Its Creator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, only God possesses authority over life and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prophets prayed for resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus commands it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elijah prayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elisha prayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus simply speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference is profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophets depended upon God&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus exercises divine authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death itself recognizes the voice of its Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-lazarus-comes-out-bound\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lazarus Comes Out Bound<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John carefully records that Lazarus emerges still wrapped in grave clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why mention this? Because Lazarus has truly returned from death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has not escaped burial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has passed through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet there is another reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Jesus Himself rises, the grave clothes remain behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus returns to ordinary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He will one day die again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus rises into glorified, resurrection life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus&#8217; resurrection points forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ&#8217;s resurrection completes the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-unbind-him\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Unbind Him&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus could have caused the grave clothes to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead He commands: <strong>&#8220;Unbind him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again Christ involves His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Jesus gives life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His followers help others walk in the freedom life brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many have seen a beautiful picture of discipleship here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Christ saves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church helps believers leave behind the remnants of the old life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While John does not explicitly make that application, it harmonizes well with the broader teaching of the New Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-seventh-sign\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Seventh Sign<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does John record exactly seven major signs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Scripture, seven represents completeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This final sign reveals Christ&#8217;s complete authority over creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every previous miracle builds toward this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He changes nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He heals disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He feeds multitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He restores sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now He conquers death itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing remains outside His authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one sign remains greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His own resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-new-creation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The New Creation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John began his Gospel with creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now he points toward new creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The same voice that once said, &#8220;Let there be light,&#8221;
