{"id":4237,"date":"2026-09-14T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4237"},"modified":"2026-09-05T13:31:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T17:31:19","slug":"mary-anoints-jesus-john-12-1-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/mary-anoints-jesus-john-12-1-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary Anoints Jesus: Worship That Prepares the King for Burial (John 12:1\u201311)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John has now brought us to the threshold of the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public ministry has ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to kill Jesus has been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final week has begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Jesus enters Jerusalem as King&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before He washes the disciples&#8217; feet&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And before Gethsemane&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Golgotha&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John records one extraordinary act of worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes place in a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not before thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But among friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to understand that before the world rejects Jesus, one disciple recognizes His incomparable worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary becomes the first person in John&#8217;s Gospel to respond appropriately to everything Jesus has revealed about Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 12:1-11 NASB<br>Therefore, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they made Him a dinner there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. Mary then took a pound of very expensive perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to betray Him, said, \u201cWhy was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?\u201d Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he kept the money box, he used to steal from what was put into it. Therefore Jesus said, \u201cLeave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.\u201d The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>extravagant worship, the preparation for Christ&#8217;s burial, and the contrast between genuine love and false devotion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the worthy King,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the sacrificial Lamb,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the One preparing to die,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Savior deserving our complete devotion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage contrasts two hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary treasures Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judas uses religion to conceal self-interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six days before Passover, Jesus returns to Bethany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dinner is prepared in His honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus sits at the table with Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary takes a pound of extremely expensive perfume made from pure nard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She pours it upon Jesus&#8217; feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she wipes His feet with her hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John notes: <strong>&#8220;The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judas immediately objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asks why the perfume was not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reveals Judas&#8217; true motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not care about the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As keeper of the money bag, he regularly stole from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus defends Mary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, large crowds gather not only to see Jesus but also Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief priests begin planning to kill Lazarus as well because many people are believing in Jesus because of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-worship\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of Worship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-six-days-before-passover\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Six Days Before Passover<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John carefully marks the timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six days remain before Passover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every event from this point moves steadily toward the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing is accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lamb of God is approaching the very feast that has pointed toward Him for fifteen centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary&#8217;s act therefore becomes deeply prophetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She prepares the true Passover Lamb for sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-house-in-bethany\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The House in Bethany<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The religious leaders are plotting murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bethany is filled with worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jerusalem is preparing rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bethany is expressing love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally contrasts the two locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One house welcomes Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another city will soon crucify Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The response to Jesus always reveals the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-martha-mary-and-lazarus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martha, Mary, and Lazarus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John quietly reminds us of each sibling&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary worships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus simply enjoys fellowship with Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these responses are criticized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, together they paint a beautiful picture of Christian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every believer is called to all three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-cost-of-the-perfume\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cost of the Perfume<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three hundred denarii represented approximately one year&#8217;s wages for an ordinary laborer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was an extraordinary gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many scholars believe such perfume was a treasured family possession or part of a woman&#8217;s future financial security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary pours out what many would have considered her most valuable earthly possession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True worship always involves sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because Christ needs our possessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because worship reveals what we value most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-the-feet\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Feet?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the ancient world, washing feet was the work of the lowest servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kings were typically anointed on the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary anoints Jesus&#8217; feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether she fully understood it or not, her act beautifully anticipates what Jesus Himself will soon do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The King who receives humble devotion is about to humble Himself even further by washing His disciples&#8217; feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The humility of Christ invites humble worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-wiping-his-feet-with-her-hair\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wiping His Feet with Her Hair<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This detail is extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jewish women ordinarily kept their hair covered in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary&#8217;s action is deeply personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deeply humble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deeply devoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She willingly embraces what others might consider socially embarrassing because her attention is fixed entirely upon Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love often appears extravagant to those who do not share it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-fragrance-filled-the-house\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fragrance Filled the House<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John rarely includes unnecessary details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fragrance fills the entire house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This detail carries beautiful symbolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True worship always influences others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aroma cannot remain hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later the New Testament describes believers themselves as the fragrance of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary&#8217;s worship becomes a picture of a life so devoted to Christ that its influence reaches everyone nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-judas-objection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Judas&#8217; Objection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, Judas sounds remarkably compassionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He speaks about helping the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John immediately removes the mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judas&#8217; concern is not generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is greed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most sobering truths in the Gospels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious language can hide selfish motives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only Jesus perfectly sees the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast could not be sharper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary gives everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judas wants to take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-does-jesus-minimize-care-for-the-poor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Jesus Minimize Care for the Poor?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some have misunderstood Jesus&#8217; statement: <strong>&#8220;You always have the poor with you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not diminishing compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Old Testament repeatedly commands care for the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus Himself consistently demonstrates such compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, He is recognizing a unique historical moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His sacrificial death is only days away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary&#8217;s opportunity to prepare Him for burial will never come again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts of worship and acts of mercy are not competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both honor God when rightly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-preparing-for-burial\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing for Burial<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the passage is that Mary appears to understand something the disciples still struggle to grasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is going to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether through spiritual insight or simple love, her actions align perfectly with God&#8217;s redemptive plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples continue debating greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary quietly prepares the Savior for burial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes love understands what intellect has not yet grasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-plot-against-lazarus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Plot Against Lazarus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chapter ends with another irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus has already experienced death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the religious leaders seek to kill him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because his very existence testifies to Christ&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darkness always seeks to silence testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet every attempt only magnifies God&#8217;s glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus never preaches a sermon in John&#8217;s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His transformed life becomes his testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That remains true for believers today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Changed lives remain among the strongest evidence of the Gospel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-worship-and-worth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worship and Worth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary&#8217;s offering only appears extravagant until we understand the worth of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once Jesus is seen for who He truly is&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No sacrifice seems excessive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of worship is always determined by the value of the One being worshiped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary&#8217;s gift says something profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is worth everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>fellowship \u2192 worship \u2192 conflict \u2192 preparation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fragrance of devotion stands in striking contrast to the growing darkness surrounding Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the worthy King,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Passover Lamb,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the object of true worship,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Savior moving willingly toward the Cross.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-mary\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She responds with extravagant worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-martha\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Martha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She faithfully serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-lazarus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lazarus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His transformed life continues pointing people to Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-judas\"
