{"id":4240,"date":"2026-09-15T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T10:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/?p=4240"},"modified":"2026-09-05T13:48:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T17:48:09","slug":"the-triumphal-entry-john-12-12-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standingfirminfaith.com\/blog\/the-triumphal-entry-john-12-12-19\/","title":{"rendered":"The Triumphal Entry: The King Who Rode a Donkey (John 12:12\u201319)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-audience-john-is-writing-to\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Audience John Is Writing To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John now begins the final week of Jesus&#8217; earthly ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything has been leading to this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signs have been given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public ministry has reached its climax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sanhedrin has already decided Jesus must die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Jesus enters Jerusalem publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not secretly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the one occasion in His earthly ministry when Jesus deliberately presents Himself as Israel&#8217;s Messiah before the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet even here, He controls every detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manner of His arrival reveals the kind of King He truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowds expect political revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus comes to accomplish spiritual redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to understand that this entrance is indeed triumphant\u2014but not for the reasons the crowd imagines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true victory will come at Calvary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 12:12-19 NASB<br>On the next day, when the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, \u201cHosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the King of Israel!\u201d Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: \u201cDo not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey\u2019s colt.\u201d These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him. So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. For this reason also the people went to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, \u201cYou see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-key-focus-of-the-passage-and-jesus-character\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus&#8217; Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is <strong>Jesus&#8217; public presentation as Israel&#8217;s King, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, and the contrast between human expectations and God&#8217;s redemptive plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the promised King,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the humble Messiah,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Zechariah&#8217;s prophecy,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the true Passover Lamb,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the sovereign Lord who willingly enters Jerusalem to die.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This event begins the final public movement toward the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-people-in-the-interaction\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The People in the Interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jesus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The disciples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The crowds from Jerusalem<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Pilgrims arriving for Passover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Pharisees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Lazarus of Bethany<\/strong> (whose resurrection influenced the crowd)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happened in the Scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day after the supper in Bethany, large crowds hear that Jesus is coming to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They take palm branches and go out to meet Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They cry: <strong>&#8220;Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus finds a young donkey and sits upon it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John explains that this fulfills the prophecy of Zechariah: <strong>&#8220;Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey&#8217;s colt.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disciples do not fully understand the significance of these events until after Jesus is glorified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd continues praising Him because many had witnessed the raising of Lazarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Pharisees become increasingly frustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say to one another: <strong>&#8220;You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-deep-theology-of-the-king-s-arrival\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deep Theology of the King&#8217;s Arrival<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-palm-branches\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Palm Branches?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palm branches were not chosen randomly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout Jewish history, they symbolized:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">victory,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">deliverance,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">national freedom,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and joyful celebration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Maccabean Revolt, palm branches became associated with Israel&#8217;s liberation from foreign oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By waving palms before Jesus, the crowd is proclaiming Him as the long-awaited King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their enthusiasm is genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their expectations are incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They hope for freedom from Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus comes to bring freedom from sin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-hosanna\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Hosanna&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, <strong>Hosanna<\/strong> meant: <strong>&#8220;Save us now!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes from Psalm 118, one of the great Messianic psalms sung during Passover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the expression became both a plea for salvation and a shout of joyful praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd unknowingly speaks profound truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus has indeed come to save.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just not in the way they expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The salvation He brings reaches far beyond national independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It extends to eternal redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-blessed-is-he-who-comes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Blessed Is He Who Comes&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd quotes Psalm 118.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This psalm had long been associated with the coming Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John intentionally connects Jesus with Israel&#8217;s great hopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Passover generation had sung these words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the One to whom they pointed finally arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scriptures are not merely being quoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are being fulfilled before the people&#8217;s eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-donkey\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Donkey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be the most important detail in the entire passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kings entered cities on horses when coming for war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They entered on donkeys when coming in peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus deliberately chooses the donkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His kingdom will not be established through military conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will be established through sacrificial love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross, not the sword, becomes His throne of victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-zechariah-9-fulfilled\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zechariah 9 Fulfilled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John explicitly quotes Zechariah 9:9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Zechariah 9:9 NASB<br>Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This prophecy had been written more than five hundred years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It describes Israel&#8217;s King as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">righteous,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">bringing salvation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">humble,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">riding upon a donkey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus fulfills every detail intentionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice especially the word <strong>humble<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything about Jesus&#8217; kingship differs from worldly expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He conquers by serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He reigns by sacrificing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And He triumphs by dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-disciples-did-not-understand\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Disciples Did Not Understand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John honestly admits: <strong>&#8220;These things His disciples did not understand at first.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This admission strengthens the credibility of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John does not portray the disciples as immediately understanding everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only after the Resurrection do they recognize how perfectly Scripture had been fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reminds us that God&#8217;s purposes often become clearer in hindsight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith frequently precedes understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-lazarus-testimony\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lazarus&#8217; Testimony<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John reminds us why the crowds are growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazarus is alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people have either witnessed or heard reliable testimony concerning his resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle continues producing fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One transformed life points thousands toward Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This illustrates the enduring power of testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God often uses visibly changed lives to awaken faith in others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-world-has-gone-after-him\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;The World Has Gone After Him&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pharisees speak with frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, they unknowingly prophesy again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John loves this kind of irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the moment they exaggerate: <strong>&#8220;The world has gone after Him.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within only a few verses, Greeks will begin seeking Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel is indeed moving toward the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pharisees mock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God&#8217;s redemptive plan quietly unfolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-hidden-tragedy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hidden Tragedy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the greatest irony of the Triumphal Entry is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd is right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet they misunderstand the kind of King He is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within days, many of the same voices celebrating Him will fall silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some may even join the cries demanding His crucifixion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Superficial enthusiasm cannot replace genuine faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John continues distinguishing between excitement over miracles and true discipleship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-true-triumph\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The True Triumph<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, we call this the Triumphal Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet where is the triumph?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in the applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in the palm branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not even in the fulfilled prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true triumph begins because the King has now entered the city where He will willingly offer Himself as the Passover Lamb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cheers are temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross is eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John wants us to see that Christ&#8217;s greatest victory will look like apparent defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mood-and-tone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mood and Tone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone moves from <strong>celebration \u2192 fulfillment \u2192 misunderstanding \u2192 quiet irony<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joy fills the streets while heaven quietly prepares for the sacrifice that will accomplish humanity&#8217;s redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-jesus-reveals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Jesus Reveals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reveals Himself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the promised King,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the humble Messiah,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the fulfillment of Zechariah,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the Prince of Peace,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and the Passover Lamb entering Jerusalem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-response-of-others\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Response of Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-crowds\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Crowds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They joyfully welcome Jesus while misunderstanding the full nature of His mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-disciples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Disciples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They participate faithfully but only later understand the significance of what they witnessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-pharisees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pharisees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They grow increasingly frustrated as Christ&#8217;s influence spreads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-jesus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He deliberately fulfills Scripture while moving willingly toward the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lesson-for-us-in-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson for Us in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-god-s-promises-are-always-fulfilled\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. God&#8217;s Promises Are Always Fulfilled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every prophecy concerning Christ unfolds exactly as God intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-jesus-defines-his-kingdom-not-our-expectations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Jesus Defines His Kingdom, Not Our Expectations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must follow the biblical Christ rather than creating one in our own image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-humility-is-the-mark-of-god-s-kingdom\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Humility Is the Mark of God&#8217;s Kingdom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The King conquered by serving and sacrificing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-temporary-enthusiasm-is-not-the-same-as-lasting-faith\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Temporary Enthusiasm Is Not the Same as Lasting Faith<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True disciples continue following Christ after the celebration ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-god-s-greatest-victories-often-appear-as-defeat\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
