And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper and laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and tied it around Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And you are clean—but not all of you.” For He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, “Not all of you are clean.” Then, when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? We Must Be Served by Christ Before We Can Serve Christ

Salvation begins by receiving the cleansing we cannot provide ourselves.

3. No Service Is Beneath a Christian

If our Lord washed feet, status can never excuse us from humble service.

4. Grace Does Not Depend Upon Another Person’s Worthiness

Jesus even washed Judas’ feet.

5. Knowledge Must Become Action

We are blessed not merely by understanding Christ’s example but by following it.

Final Reflection

On the final night before His crucifixion, Jesus had very little time left.

Every minute mattered.

He could have used those moments to emphasize His authority.

Instead, He demonstrated it.

He took a towel.

That may be one of the most important images in the entire Gospel.

John tells us that all things were in His hands.

And what did those hands do?

They washed feet.

Soon those same hands would be stretched across a Cross.

The basin and Calvary reveal the same Savior.

He stoops.

He cleanses.

And He serves.

He gives Himself.

This completely changes how Christians should understand greatness.

Greatness is not how many people serve us.

It is how willingly we serve others.

Leadership is not primarily a position.

It is a towel.

And perhaps the most challenging detail is Judas.

Jesus did not wash only the feet of people who would remain faithful.

Peter would deny Him.

The others would flee.

Judas would betray Him.

Jesus knew all of it.

Still He knelt.

That is grace.

Yet the basin also reminds us that before we imitate Jesus, we must receive Jesus.

Peter first had to allow the Lord to wash him.

So do we.

We cannot cleanse ourselves.

We cannot earn our place at the table.

And we receive the cleansing Christ purchased at the Cross.

Then, secure in His love, we rise from that table ready to kneel beside others.

So the question becomes:

Am I secure enough in who I am in Christ to take the lower place willingly, serving people who may never recognize, repay, appreciate, or even deserve what I give, because that is exactly how my King first loved and served me?

Suggested Reading

The Battle Is Waging!
