And then Pilate came out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that I find no grounds at all for charges in His case.” Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for I find no grounds for charges in His case!” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God!” Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; and he entered the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilate said to Him, “Are you not speaking to me? class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

The Deep Theology of the Suffering King

The Scourging

John gives almost no physical detail.

That restraint matters.

Roman scourging was brutal.

A prisoner could be beaten with leather thongs containing pieces of bone or metal.

The punishment could tear flesh deeply and leave a person near death.

Yet John does not sensationalize the suffering.

He simply tells us: “Pilate then took Jesus and had Him scourged.”

The Gospel writers consistently resist turning the Passion into spectacle.

The emphasis is not merely how much Jesus suffered physically.

It is who is suffering.

The eternal Son.

The innocent Lamb.

The King.

Why Did Pilate Have Jesus Scourged?

Pilate has already declared Him innocent.

So why beat Him?

Most likely, Pilate hopes that severe punishment will satisfy the crowd without requiring execution.

It is a political compromise.

Punish the innocent enough to appease the mob.

Then perhaps release Him.

This is moral cowardice dressed as pragmatism.

Pilate knows what is right.

He simply lacks the courage to do it.

The Crown of Thorns

The soldiers intend comedy.

Jesus claims kingship?

Give Him a crown.

But they choose thorns.

And suddenly the entire biblical story echoes in the room.

After humanity’s fall, God declares that the ground will produce: “thorns and thistles.”

Thorns become one of Scripture’s earliest symbols of the curse.

Now the King wears the curse upon His head.

This symbolism should not be overstated as though John explicitly explains it.

But within the wider biblical story, the image is profound.

The second Adam bears the sign of Adam’s curse.

The King wears what sin produced.

Soon He will bear the curse itself upon the Cross.

The Purple Robe

Purple represented royalty.

The soldiers dress Jesus as a fake king.

Yet the joke turns back upon them.

He really is King.

John’s Passion narrative repeatedly works this way.

People speak more truth than they understand.

Caiaphas prophesies substitution.

Pilate calls Jesus King.

The soldiers dress Him in royal colors.

The inscription above the Cross will proclaim His kingship.

The world mocks the truth while unknowingly announcing it.

“Hail, King of the Jews!”

The soldiers parody royal greeting.

They bow in mockery.

Strike Him.

Humiliate Him.

Yet one day every knee will truly bow.

Their mock worship foreshadows universal acknowledgment.

For the moment, however, Jesus absorbs ridicule without retaliation.

The King possesses power sufficient to destroy His tormentors.

Instead, He suffers for sinners.

That is the character of His kingship.

“Behold the Man”

<p expects cooperation.

Jesus remains silent.

This echoes Isaiah’s prophecy: “Like a lamb that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.”

Jesus does not owe Pilate an explanation.

He has already testified to truth.

Pilate had the opportunity to listen.

Instead, he asked: “What is truth?”

and walked away.

Silence now confronts the man who You?”

This may be one of the most ironic statements in the Gospel.

Pilate believes Jesus does not understand power.

In reality, Pilate does not.

He sees authority as political control.

Jesus sees authority as delegated stewardship beneath God’s sovereignty.

Pilate believes Jesus’ life rests in his hands.

Jesus knows Pilate’s authority itself rests in God’s.

<hr class="wp-block-separator “You would have no authority over Me at all, if it had not been given to you from above.”

This does not excuse Pilate.

Jesus immediately speaks of guilt.

Human responsibility remains real.

Yet divine sovereignty stands above human authority.

Rome is powerful.

God is sovereign.

Pilate decides.

God reigns.

The Cross occurs through genuine human evil while simultaneously fulfilling God’s redemptive purpose.

The Bible refuses to choose between divine sovereignty and human responsibility.

It affirms both.

Governmental Authority Is Delegated

There is a broader biblical principle here.

Human rulers possess real authority.

But never ultimate authority.

Every earthly ruler governs under God’s sovereignty whether they acknowledge Him or not.

That means political authority should never be worshiped.

No government is absolute.

No ruler is sovereign in the ultimate sense.

Caesar has authority.

But only because heaven allows it.

<hr class="wp-block-separator that from this point: “Pilate made efforts to release Him.”

Pilate’s conscience is still active.

He knows this execution is wrong.

But knowing what is right and doing what is right remain two different things.

Pilate keeps searching for a way to preserve:

Jesus’ life.

His own position.

And public order.

Eventually he discovers he cannot preserve all three.

Not theology.

Not justice.

Career.

Release Jesus, and we may report you as disloyal.

Pilate now faces a choice.

Fear of Man Again

Earlier John described rulers who believed in Jesus but remained silent because: “They loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.”

Now Pilate falls into the same trap from another direction.

He knows the truth.

But fear of political consequences overrules conviction.

The fear of man is not confined to religious people.

It enslaves rulers too.

<hr class="wp-block-separator class="wp-block-paragraph">Yet throughout the entire encounter, John has been reversing the scene.

Who actually understands truth?

Jesus.

Who actually possesses ultimate authority?

Jesus.

Who actually judges righteously?

Jesus.

Pilate’s judgment seat is temporary.

Christ’s throne is eternal.

The judge is ultimately being judged by his response to
