Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath ( for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. class="wp-block-paragraph">That detail naturally reminds biblical readers of Passover.

In Exodus 12, hyssop was used to apply the blood of the Passover lamb to the doorposts.

John has been presenting Jesus as the true Passover Lamb throughout the Passion.

We the Messiah hangs crucified.

Outward religious concern persists even as the One to whom the Scriptures point has been rejected.

Jesus’ Legs Are Not Broken

<p legs.

John immediately sees theological significance.

Scripture is being fulfilled.

Jesus dies at Passover.

The Lamb of God remains unbroken.

John’s presentation could hardly be more deliberate.

The Passover Lamb

The connections now accumulate.

Passover.

Hyssop.

Unbroken bones.

The Lamb of God.

John wants us to understand the Cross through the great story of Exodus.

In Egypt, judgment passed over homes marked by the blood of a lamb.

Now the true Lamb gives His blood.

A greater Exodus is being accomplished.

Not merely freedom from Pharaoh.

Freedom from sin and death.

<hr class="wp-block-separator Jesus’ side with a spear.

Why?

The text does not tell us the soldier’s motive.

Perhaps he is confirming death.

What matters to John is the result.

Blood and water flow out.

And the piercing fulfills Scripture.

The body of Jesus has truly died.

This is no swoon.

No near-death state.

No illusion.

Blood and Water

This detail has generated extensive theological discussion.

Some see sacramental symbolism.

Others see purification and atonement.

Others emphasize the physical confirmation of death.

John does not explicitly explain the symbolism here, so we should avoid claiming more certainty than the text provides.

At minimum, the blood and water serve as solemn eyewitness evidence that Jesus truly died.

Within John’s broader theology, however, both images carry rich associations.

Blood with sacrifice.

Water with cleansing and life.

It is reasonable to recognize those echoes while allowing John’s eyewitness emphasis to remain primary.

John Steps Into the Story

Suddenly John stops the narrative and says, in effect:

I saw this.

“And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true.”

Why interrupt the class="wp-block-paragraph">Jesus actually died.

The Resurrection that follows will therefore be an actual resurrection.

John wants his readers to know:

This is eyewitness testimony.

<hr class="wp-block-separator class="wp-block-paragraph">This connects directly with the purpose statement near the end of the Gospel.

John is not merely recording history for curiosity.

He is calling for faith.

He saw.

And He testifies.

We hear.

And we are invited to believe.

The eyewitness class="wp-block-heading">“Not a Bone of Him Shall Be Broken”

John connects the unbroken bones with Scripture.

<p death.

He died.

But even in death, Scripture governs the details.

Then the Gospel brings us to the Cross.

And Jesus says: Finished.

The Lamb has been offered.

The mission has been completed.

The Son has obeyed.

The sacrifice has been made.

The work the Father gave Him has been accomplished.

Nothing remains for another sacrifice to complete.

Nothing remains for our religious performance to improve.

And nothing remains for our guilt to repay.

That does not mean sin is insignificant.

Quite the opposite.

The Cross shows us how serious sin truly is.

Our sin required something we could never provide for ourselves.

The sinless Son of God gave His life.

But once He gave it…

the sacrifice was sufficient.

This is where many of us struggle.

We believe Jesus forgives us, yet we continue trying to punish ourselves.

We confess our sin but continue carrying shame as though our guilt somehow honors God.

And we fail and then imagine that perhaps we need to prove ourselves worthy of returning.

But the Cross does not invite us to finish what Jesus started.

It invites us to trust what Jesus finished.

There is an enormous difference.

Christianity is not Jesus doing His part while we complete the rest.

Our obedience matters.

Our repentance matters.

And our growth matters.

Our service matters.

But none of those things become another payment for sin.

They are the grateful response of people whose debt has already been dealt with through Christ.

That means when Satan accuses… we look to the Cross.

When our conscience condemns us… we look to the Cross.

When our past reminds us of what we have done…we look to the Cross.

When we wonder whether God could possibly forgive us again… we look to the Cross.

And from that Cross comes the same declaration: “It is finished.”

But there is another side to these words.

If Christ finished the work necessary for our redemption, then we no longer belong to ourselves.

The One who gave everything for us now calls us to give ourselves to Him.

Grace is free.

But grace is never cheap.

The Cross that removes our condemnation also becomes the pattern of our discipleship.

Jesus gave Himself completely.

Now He calls us to follow Him completely.

Not because we are trying to earn salvation.

Because we have received it.

We forgive because we have been forgiven.

We love because we have been loved.

And we serve because the King served us.

We surrender because the Savior surrendered Himself for us.

We pursue holiness because the Holy One has made us His own.

And when we fail—and we will—we do not begin the Gospel again.

We return to the finished work upon which our entire Christian life already rests.

John then gives us one final assurance.

He was there.

He saw the spear.

And He saw the blood and water.

He saw the body of Jesus.

And he interrupts his own narrative to tell us: “His testimony is true.”

Why does John care so deeply that we understand Jesus truly died?

Because everything that comes next depends upon it.

There can be no resurrection without death.

The tomb must truly receive Him before the tomb can truly surrender Him.

Friday must be real for Sunday to mean anything.

So for a moment, John asks us not to rush ahead.

Do not hurry toward the empty tomb yet.

Stand at the Cross.

Look at the Lamb.

See the pierced Savior.

Listen to His final declaration.

The greatest work of redemption in human history has been accomplished.

The serpent has struck His heel.

The Lamb has been slain.

The King has given His life.

The Son has finished the Father’s work.

And although almost everyone standing there believes death has won…

Jesus has already told us otherwise.

“It is finished.”

Not:

“I am defeated.”

Not:

“Everything is over.”

But:

The work is complete.

The Cross therefore becomes the place where striving ends and faith begins.

We do not stand before God pointing to everything we have done for Him.

We stand before God pointing to what Christ has done for us.

That is our confidence.

That is our righteousness.

And that is our peace.

That is our hope.

And eventually, when we reach the end of ourselves and realize we could never save ourselves anyway, we discover the freedom contained in the Savior’s final words.

We never had to finish the work.

Jesus already did.

So the question becomes:

Am I truly resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ, or am I still trying, through guilt, religious performance, self-punishment, or striving, to complete something my Savior has already declared finished?

Suggested Reading

<figure
