Jesus has been betrayed, arrested, falsely accused, scourged, mocked, crucified, pierced, and buried. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus prepared His body, placed it inside a new tomb, and left as the Sabbath approached. From every visible perspective, death appeared to have done what death always does: bring the story to an end.

Then John writes:

“Now on the first day of the week…”

Those words quietly announce that the entire order of things is about to change.

John does not begin resurrection morning with crowds celebrating or disciples confidently waiting for Jesus to rise. Instead, he introduces us to Mary Magdalene walking toward a tomb while it is still dark, fully expecting Jesus to remain dead. When she discovers the stone has been removed, resurrection is not even her first explanation; she assumes someone has stolen His body.

That detail matters because the disciples are not creating resurrection faith out of wishful thinking. They are being confronted by a reality none of them expected.

The tomb is empty. The burial cloths remain. The body is gone.

And soon, Jesus Himself will speak.

John 20:1-18 NASB95
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes. But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'” Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Character

The focus is the historical reality of the Resurrection, the beginning of new creation, the movement from grief toward faith, and the deeply personal way the risen Christ reveals Himself to His people.

Jesus reveals Himself as:

the risen Lord,

the conqueror of death,

the Good Shepherd who calls His sheep by name,

the Savior who meets grieving people personally,

and the Son who brings His followers into the family of the Father.

John is not simply telling us that Jesus escaped the grave.

He is announcing that death itself has encountered Someone it cannot hold.

The People in the Interaction

Jesus

Mary Magdalene

Peter

The beloved disciple

Two angels

What Happened in the Scene

Mary arrives early on the first day of the week and discovers that the stone has been removed from the tomb. Assuming someone has taken Jesus’ body, she runs to Peter and the beloved disciple and tells them:

“They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.”

The two disciples immediately run toward the tomb. John arrives first and looks inside, but Peter enters before him. They discover that Jesus’ body is gone while the linen burial cloths remain, with the face cloth lying separately. John then enters and tells us:

“He saw and believed.”

Yet he honestly admits that they still did not fully understand the Scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead.

Peter and John eventually return home, but Mary stays outside the tomb weeping. When she looks inside, she sees two angels where Jesus’ body had been. They ask why she is crying, and she gives the explanation she still believes: someone has taken her Lord.

Then Mary turns and sees Jesus standing nearby, although she does not recognize Him. Jesus asks:

“Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

Thinking He is the gardener, Mary asks whether He has moved the body.

Then Jesus says:

“Mary!”

One word changes everything.

The First Day of a New Creation

John’s reference to the first day of the week reaches back toward the opening words of his Gospel: “In the beginning was the Word.” John has intentionally used the language and imagery of creation throughout his account, presenting Jesus as the eternal Word through whom everything came into being, the Light shining in darkness, and the One in whom there is life.

Now, on the first day of the week, the Creator rises from the grave.

The connection is powerful. Genesis begins with light entering darkness; John 20 begins while it is still dark, but the Light of the World is already alive. The old creation, scarred by Adam’s sin and dominated by death, has encountered the beginning of something new.

Jesus’ Resurrection is therefore greater than the raising of Lazarus. Lazarus returned to ordinary mortal life and eventually died again. Jesus rises into resurrection life, never to die again. He is, as Paul will later explain, the firstfruits of a much greater harvest.

The Resurrection is not simply God giving Jesus His life back.

It is the beginning of the world God intends to make new.

When It Is Still Dark

Mary does not know any of this yet. She is walking through darkness externally and internally, carrying the grief of someone whose world has collapsed. Yet while she believes death has won, God’s victory has already occurred.

That distinction is deeply encouraging.

Mary’s emotions are genuine, but they are not an infallible interpretation of reality. She feels abandoned while Jesus is alive. She believes the story has ended while God has already begun a new creation. And she thinks the body has been taken, while the risen Christ prepares to meet her.

There may be seasons when our experience feels similar. We pray but cannot see what God is doing; circumstances seem final, and the evidence available to us appears to point toward loss. The Resurrection reminds us that our inability to see God’s work does not mean God is not working.

Sometimes the stone has already been moved before we understand what God has done.

Peter, John, and the Evidence Inside the Tomb

When Mary reports the missing body, Peter and John run. John remembers reaching the tomb first, but Peter, characteristically, is the first to enter. Their personalities remain recognizable even in the middle of history’s greatest morning.

Inside they discover something unexpected. The body is gone, but the linen cloths remain.

John clearly considers their condition meaningful. If someone had stolen Jesus’ body, removing the burial wrappings first would make little practical sense, particularly when secrecy and speed would presumably matter. John does not construct an elaborate forensic argument; he simply reports what he saw.

Then he gives us the remarkable statement:

“He saw and believed.”

Jesus has not yet appeared to John. Something about the evidence awakens faith, even though John admits that his theological understanding remains incomplete.

That should encourage believers who sometimes think genuine faith requires complete understanding. John believes before he fully comprehends everything the Resurrection means. His faith is real, and his understanding will continue growing.

Ours does too.

Mary Stayed

Peter and John leave, but Mary remains near the tomb. She cannot explain what has happened; she has no theological framework for the empty grave, and her tears continue because she still believes Jesus has been taken from her.

Yet she stays.

There is something beautiful about love that remains near Jesus even when understanding fails. Mary cannot solve the mystery or make sense of God’s purposes, but she refuses to leave the place where she last knew her Lord had been.

And there Jesus meets her.

The angels ask:

“Woman, why are you weeping?”

Moments later, Jesus asks the same question.

Neither is criticizing grief. Jesus Himself wept at Lazarus’ tomb. Instead, the question gently reveals that the reason for Mary’s despair no longer exists. She is mourning a dead Jesus while the living Jesus stands nearby.

Resurrection does not tell us that grief is wrong.

It tells us grief never gets the final word.

“Whom Are You Seeking?”

Jesus adds another question:

“Whom are you seeking?”

Near the beginning of John’s Gospel, Jesus asked His first followers, “What are you seeking?” Now, near its conclusion, He asks Mary whom she seeks.

That change is significant because Christianity ultimately centers upon a Person.

Mary is not looking for a philosophy, an explanation, or even a miracle. She wants Jesus. Her only mistake is believing that the Jesus she loves can now exist only as a corpse.

She is searching for the living Lord among the dead.

Jesus is about to correct her understanding with remarkable tenderness.

She Thought He Was the Gardener

Mary sees Jesus but assumes He is the gardener. John does not tell us exactly why she fails to recognize Him, so we should resist inventing an explanation. Grief may have clouded her perception, His resurrected appearance may have differed in some way, or recognition may simply have been withheld for the moment.

Yet John’s mention of a gardener is beautifully suggestive within the larger biblical story.

Humanity’s fall began in a garden. Jesus was arrested in a garden and buried in a garden. Now, on the first day of new creation, the risen Lord stands in a garden.

Mary is wrong about His identity, but the image is almost fitting.

The second Adam has come to restore what the first Adam lost. The curse is being reversed, death has been defeated, and creation’s renewal has begun.

The Shepherd Says Her Name

Mary does not recognize Jesus by sight, nor does she recognize Him when He first speaks.

Then He says:

“Mary!”

Suddenly she knows.

Earlier Jesus had said of the Good Shepherd:

“He calls His own sheep by name.”

Now the risen Shepherd does exactly what He promised.

This is one of the most encouraging moments in John’s Gospel because it brings together the enormous and the deeply personal. The Resurrection changes the destiny of creation, defeats death, vindicates the Son of God, and guarantees the future resurrection of believers; yet the Lord who accomplished all of that still pauses beside one grieving woman and speaks her name.

Resurrection glory has not made Jesus distant.

The King knows His sheep.

From “Rabboni” to “My Brothers”

Mary responds:

“Rabboni!”

The Teacher she watched die is alive, and the voice she thought she would never hear again has spoken directly to her. We can imagine the relief and joy contained in that single response.

Jesus then tells her not to continue clinging to Him because His mission is still moving toward Ascension. Their relationship will not simply return to what it was before Calvary; resurrection opens a new stage in God’s redemptive plan, one that will lead to the Ascension, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the worldwide mission of the Church.

Then Jesus says something filled with grace:

“Go to My brothers.”

Consider who those brothers are. They are the men who fled when Jesus was arrested, including Peter, who denied knowing Him three times.

Jesus knows every detail of their failure.

Yet His first resurrection message to them is not:

“Go tell those cowards I want an explanation.”

He calls them:

“My brothers.”

The Cross has dealt with sin, and grace speaks more powerfully than their failure.

“My Father and Your Father”

Jesus tells Mary:

“I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.”

Jesus’ relationship with the Father remains unique because He is the eternal Son, but through His death and Resurrection, believers are brought into God’s family by grace. The Father Jesus has revealed throughout the Gospel is now described as your Father.

John told us in chapter one that those who receive Christ are given the right to become children of God. Here, on resurrection morning, that promise blossoms into family language.

Jesus has not merely conquered death so that we can live longer.

He has brought us home to the Father.

Mary Becomes the Messenger

Mary arrived at the tomb carrying bad news:

“They have taken away the Lord.”

She leaves carrying the greatest news ever entrusted to human lips:

“I have seen the Lord.”

Her transformation is remarkable. She moves from grief to encounter, from confusion to recognition, and from clinging to Jesus to being sent by Jesus.

This is the pattern of Christian witness.

We encounter Christ, and then we tell others what we have discovered.

Mary does not possess a complete theology of the Resurrection yet. She simply knows the most important fact.

Jesus is alive.

Why Mary’s Witness Matters

There is something especially beautiful about Jesus choosing Mary Magdalene for this first personal resurrection appearance recorded by John. In the ancient world, women did not always receive the same social or legal credibility as men. If someone were inventing a resurrection account merely to make it persuasive within that culture, centering a grieving woman as the first witness would have been an unusual strategy.

John does not reshape the story to make it more culturally convenient.

He records what happened.

And what happened reveals something about the kingdom of God. Jesus entrusts the announcement of His Resurrection to someone society might easily have underestimated.

Grace repeatedly does that.

God delights in placing extraordinary treasure into ordinary people so the glory remains His.

What the Empty Tomb Changes

The empty tomb changes everything that came before it.

Without the Resurrection, the Cross could be remembered merely as the tragic execution of a remarkable teacher. With the Resurrection, the Cross is revealed as the victorious sacrifice of the Son of God.

Jesus’ claims are vindicated.

His promises are confirmed.

His sacrifice is accepted.

And His identity is established.

Death is defeated.

The future resurrection of His people becomes certain.

The One who said:

“I am the resurrection and the life”

has now demonstrated that death itself must yield to His authority.

This does not mean Christians stop experiencing sorrow or physical death. Mary will eventually die, as will Peter, John, and every generation of believers until Christ returns. What changes is the meaning of death.

For those who belong to Christ, the grave is no longer a permanent destination.

It is temporary.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Christian Faith Is Rooted in a Real Resurrection

The disciples encountered evidence they did not expect and a living Christ they had not imagined into existence.

3. Jesus Meets People Personally

The Lord of new creation still knows His sheep by name.

4. Resurrection Hope Turns Grieving People Into Witnesses

Mary arrives weeping and leaves announcing, “I have seen the Lord.”

Final Reflection

Perhaps the most encouraging part of resurrection morning is that Mary is wrong about almost everything she believes upon arriving at the tomb.

She believes Jesus is dead.

He is alive.

She believes someone has taken Him away.

No one has.

She believes she is alone in her grief.

Jesus is standing nearby.

She believes she is speaking with a gardener.

She is speaking with the risen Lord of creation.

Yet Jesus does not shame her for misunderstanding.

He calls her name.

That tells us something beautiful about Christ’s patience. He does not require Mary to understand the Resurrection before He reveals Himself to her; His presence becomes the answer to the confusion she cannot resolve on her own.

There will be moments in our lives when we are more like Mary than we would like to admit. We will look at circumstances and conclude that God has stopped working, assume that loss means abandonment, or interpret silence as evidence that the story is over. We may stand outside situations we cannot understand and ask questions for which no answer seems available.

Resurrection morning reminds us that our interpretation is not always the same thing as reality.

Sometimes God has already moved the stone.

Sometimes the victory has already been won.

And sometimes Christ is nearer than we realize.

The Christian hope is not that every painful circumstance will immediately turn around, nor that every earthly loss will be restored exactly as we desire. Our hope is far stronger than that.

Jesus Christ is alive.

Because He lives, sin does not get the final word.

Failure does not get the final word.

Suffering does not get the final word.

The grave does not get the final word.

Christ does.

And perhaps that is why Jesus’ first personal word to Mary is so important.

He does not begin with an explanation.

He begins with her name.

The Savior who conquered death still deals personally with His people. He knows who is standing outside the tomb. He knows what has been lost, what has been feared, what has been misunderstood, and what tears have been shed.

Then, in His timing, the Shepherd speaks.

Mary came looking for a dead Jesus and discovered a living Lord. She arrived believing the story was over, and left carrying the announcement that would change human history.

“I have seen the Lord.”

That remains the heartbeat of Christianity.

We do not follow the memory of a dead teacher.

We follow a risen King.

So the question becomes:

When I cannot understand what God is doing, and my circumstances seem to tell me that hope has disappeared, will I allow what I can see to define what I believe, or will I remember the empty tomb and trust that the risen Jesus may already be at work in ways I have not yet learned to recognize?

Suggested Reading

The Resurrection of Jesus: The Dawn of the New Creation (Luke 24:1–12)
<iframe loading="lazy" class="wp-embedded-content" sandbox="allow-scripts" security="restricted" style="position: absolute;
