The tomb is empty. Thomas has confessed Him as:

“My Lord and my God!”

What more needs to be said?

John gives us one more chapter because resurrection does not merely prove who Jesus is; resurrection also shows us what Jesus does with broken disciples.

Peter has seen the risen Lord, but something remains unresolved. The last time John mentioned a charcoal fire, Peter stood beside it denying three times that he knew Jesus. The Resurrection has established that Christ is alive, yet Peter still carries the memory of what he did on the darkest night of his life.

Jesus is about to meet him there.

Not to pretend the failure never happened, and not to shame Peter by making him endlessly relive it, but to bring grace directly into the place where shame has taken root.

That distinction makes this one of the most encouraging interactions in the entire Gospel.

John 21:1-19 NASB
After these things Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: Simon Peter, Thomas who was called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish. So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already made and fish placed on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.” So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to inquire of Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. This was now the third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead. Now when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep. Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” Now He said this, indicating by what kind of death he would glorify God. Peter announces:

“I am going fishing.”

The others join him, but despite working through the night, they catch nothing.

As morning arrives, Jesus stands on the shore, although the disciples do not initially recognize Him. He asks whether they have any fish, and after they answer no, He tells them to cast the net on the right side of the boat.

Suddenly the net fills with so many fish that they cannot haul it in.

The beloved disciple immediately understands:

“It is the Lord!”

As soon as Peter hears those words, he puts on his outer garment and throws himself into the water, leaving the others to bring the boat and overflowing net toward shore.

When they arrive, they discover that Jesus has already prepared breakfast.

John tells us there is:

“A charcoal fire already made and fish placed on it, and bread.”

After they eat, Jesus turns toward Peter.

Then comes the conversation that will redefine Peter’s future.

“Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”

Peter answers:

“Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”

Jesus responds:

“Tend My lambs.”

Jesus asks again.

Then a third time.

By the third question, Peter is grieved.

Yet after every confession of love, Jesus entrusts His flock to Peter.

Finally, Jesus tells Peter that one day his own faithfulness will cost him his life.

Then the conversation ends with two familiar words:

“Follow Me!”

Peter’s story has returned to where discipleship began.

“I Am Going Fishing”

Peter’s decision to fish has sometimes been interpreted as abandoning his calling and returning permanently to his former occupation. The text does not clearly say that, so we should be cautious about criticizing Peter for something John does not explicitly condemn.

The disciples need food; they know how to fish, and Jesus has not yet fully clarified what comes next.

What matters more is what happens during the night.

Experienced fishermen work for hours and catch nothing.

Then Jesus appears.

This scene intentionally sounds familiar.

Earlier in the disciples’ ministry, another miraculous catch of fish accompanied Peter’s calling. Now, after Peter’s greatest failure, Jesus creates another miraculous catch immediately before restoring that calling.

Grace brings Peter back to familiar waters.

An Empty Net Before a Full One

The disciples fish all night without success. Then a voice from shore tells them where to cast, and suddenly the net is overflowing.

John is not teaching that Christians should expect miraculous business success whenever they follow God’s instructions. The point is Christ’s sovereign provision and the disciples’ dependence upon Him.

Jesus had already told them:

“Apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Now an empty net becomes another reminder.

Their future mission will not succeed because Peter is strong, John is insightful, or the disciples are experienced. Everything will depend upon the risen Christ.

That is an important lesson immediately before Peter receives responsibility for Christ’s sheep.

Peter cannot shepherd the Church through personality alone.

He will need Jesus.

“It Is the Lord!”

John recognizes Jesus first.

Peter reacts first.

That combination feels entirely consistent with the men we have encountered throughout the Gospel.

John sees the sign and understands:

“It is the Lord!”

Peter hears those words and immediately throws himself into the water.

Consider how different this Peter is from the man standing beside the first charcoal fire.

That night Peter tried to remain near Jesus without being identified with Him. Now, once he realizes Jesus is on the shore, distance becomes unbearable.

He does not wait for the boat.

He goes to Christ.

Failure has not destroyed Peter’s love.

Jesus Has Already Prepared Breakfast

When the disciples reach shore, they discover that Jesus already has fish and bread waiting.

This small scene reveals something tender about the risen Christ.

The One who conquered death prepares breakfast for tired fishermen.

Resurrection glory has not changed His servant heart.

Jesus remains the Lord who notices ordinary human needs.

He could have greeted them with a theological lecture or immediately begun discussing the future of the Church. Instead, He feeds them.

The disciples brought some of their fish, yet Jesus had already provided before their catch arrived.

That is a beautiful picture of grace: Christ graciously includes what His disciples bring while never depending upon it.

Another Charcoal Fire

Then John gives us a detail that should immediately catch our attention.

“A charcoal fire.”

The Greek word John uses for charcoal fire appears only twice in his Gospel.

The first is in John 18.

Peter is standing beside a charcoal fire when he denies Jesus.

The second is here.

That cannot easily be dismissed as meaningless.

Imagine the smell.

Memory can be remarkably powerful, and scent especially can return us to moments we thought were buried. We cannot know exactly what Peter felt, but John clearly wants his readers to remember the earlier fire.

Jesus has brought Peter back near the setting of his failure.

But He has changed what happens there.

The first fire witnessed denial.

The second will witness restoration.

Grace Does Not Pretend the Failure Never Happened

Sometimes we misunderstand forgiveness as though grace requires everyone to act as if the wound never occurred.

Jesus does something better.

He addresses Peter’s failure without allowing it to define him permanently.

The Savior does not say:

“Peter, don’t think about that night.”

Neither does He repeatedly accuse him.

Instead, Jesus enters the painful place with Peter and transforms its meaning.

This is often how Christ heals us.

He does not always erase the memory.

Sometimes He redeems it.

The place that once reminded us only of failure can eventually become the place where we remember grace.

“Simon, Son of John”

Jesus does not begin:

“Peter.”

He says:

“Simon, son of John.”

This is the name Peter carried before Jesus gave him the name Cephas or Peter.

There may be significance in Jesus using his original name, although we should avoid pressing the detail too far. But He is restoring the relationship from which faithful obedience must grow.

Before:

Feed My sheep.

First:

Do you love Me?

What About the Different Greek Words for Love?

This passage is sometimes explained by emphasizing that Jesus initially uses agapaō, while Peter responds with phileō, with the suggestion that Jesus is asking for a higher form of love while Peter offers a lesser form of love, friendship.

There may be nuance in the vocabulary, and thoughtful interpreters differ on how much weight to give it.

However, John often uses these Greek words with considerable overlap elsewhere in his Gospel, so we should be cautious about constructing the entire interpretation around a sharp distinction that the text may not intend.

The clearest emphasis is not the difference between two Greek verbs.

It is the repeated question:

Peter, do you love Me?

And Peter’s repeated appeal:

Lord, You know.

Why Three Times?

The connection with Peter’s three denials is difficult to miss.

Three times Peter denied Jesus.

Three times Jesus asks about his love.

Yet notice how Jesus handles the restoration.

He does not reenact the denial to humiliate Peter. He creates an opportunity for Peter’s confession to stand where his denial once stood.

The three questions hurt.

John tells us:

“Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?'”

Restoration can be painful because grace sometimes touches precisely the wound we would prefer to avoid.

But Jesus is not reopening Peter’s wound to injure him.

He is cleaning it so it can heal.

“Lord, You Know All Things”

Peter’s final answer is very different from his confidence before the Cross.

Before his denial, Peter essentially said:

I know myself. I will never fail You. And I will die for You.

Now he says:

“Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Something has changed.

Peter no longer appeals primarily to his own confidence.

He appeals to Christ’s knowledge.

The man who once trusted his own self-assessment has learned that Jesus knows him better.

That is spiritual growth.

Peter’s failure has humbled him without destroying him.

Grace has begun replacing self-confidence with Christ-confidence.

“Tend My Lambs”

After each declaration of love, Jesus gives Peter responsibility.

“Tend My lambs.”

“Shepherd My sheep.”

“Tend My sheep.”

This is extraordinary.

Jesus does not merely say:

“I forgive you.”

He says, in effect:

I still have work for you to do.

The disciple who failed publicly is entrusted with the care of Christ’s people.

That does not mean every failure automatically leaves every form of ministry unchanged; Scripture gives qualifications for leadership, and consequences can remain. But Peter’s story proves that failure itself does not place a repentant believer permanently beyond usefulness to God.

Christ can restore.

And restored people often shepherd others with a humility they did not possess before they broke.

Whose Sheep Are They?

Notice the wording.

Jesus does not say:

“Build your flock.”

He says:

“My sheep.”

This is essential for every Christian leader.

The people we serve belong to Jesus.

Not to pastors.

Not to churches.

And not to ministries.

Not to personalities.

Christ purchased His sheep with His own blood.

Those entrusted with leadership are stewards, not owners.

Peter is being commissioned to care for people who remain the possession of the Good Shepherd.

That truth should create both humility and seriousness in anyone entrusted with spiritual responsibility.

Love for Jesus Becomes Care for People

Jesus connects Peter’s love for Him directly with the treatment of His sheep.

Peter cannot simply say:

“Jesus, You know I love You”

while ignoring the people Jesus loves.

Love for Christ becomes visible through service.

This principle extends beyond pastoral ministry.

If we love Jesus, that love should shape how we treat:

our families,

fellow believers,

neighbors,

coworkers,

the hurting,

and those God places within our responsibility.

Devotion to Christ that never becomes love toward people remains incomplete.

Peter Will Eventually Keep His Promise

Jesus then tells Peter that when he is older, others will stretch out his hands and take him where he does not wish to go.

John explains:

“Now He said this to indicate by what kind of death he would glorify God.”

Earlier Peter promised:

“I will lay down my life for You.”

He failed that night.

But Jesus now reveals that one day Peter will indeed follow Him into death.

The failure was real.

It simply was not final.

According to early Christian tradition, Peter eventually died as a martyr under Roman persecution. John does not give us those later details here, so we need not rely on tradition to understand the passage. John’s point is sufficient:

Peter will one day glorify God through faithful death.

The cowardice of the courtyard will not define his future.

Grace Does More Than Return Peter to Where He Was

This is important.

Jesus does not merely restore Peter to his pre-failure condition.

Peter, before the denial, was courageous but self-confident, devoted but impulsive, sincere but often unaware of his weaknesses.

The restored Peter is being prepared to become something deeper.

A shepherd who knows what failure feels like.

A leader who knows he needs grace.

A disciple who has discovered that Jesus’ faithfulness is stronger than his own.

God often uses brokenness this way.

He does not call evil good, and He does not need our sin in order to accomplish His purposes. Yet when repentant people bring their failures to Christ, He can redeem what would otherwise bring only shame.

Peter’s wound will become part of the humility with which he shepherds others.

“Follow Me”

Then Jesus says:

“Follow Me.”

Those words take Peter back to the beginning.

Before the miracles.

Before the arguments about greatness.

And before Peter walked on water.

Before the Transfiguration.

Before the denial.

Jesus called him to follow.

Now, after everything that has happened, Jesus gives him the same invitation.

“Follow Me.”

The call has survived Peter’s failure.

That may be the most encouraging truth in the passage.

Jesus is not telling Peter to spend the rest of his life staring backward at the courtyard.

There is a future.

There are sheep to feed.

And there is a mission to fulfill.

There will even be suffering ahead.

So:

Follow Me.

The Difference Between Conviction and Condemnation

Peter’s restoration helps us understand an important distinction.

Condemnation says:

You failed, therefore you are finished.

Christlike conviction says:

You failed; bring it into the light, receive grace, learn from it, and follow Me forward.

One traps us permanently in yesterday.

The other leads us through repentance toward renewed obedience.

The Gospel never minimizes sin.

Peter’s denial mattered enough that Jesus addressed it directly.

But grace refuses to let forgiven sin become the believer’s permanent identity.

Peter denied Christ.

That is something Peter did.

It is not ultimately who Peter is.

He belongs to Jesus.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Grace Calls Us Forward

Jesus’ final word to Peter is not “Remember your failure.” It is:

“Follow Me.”

Final Reflection

There are two charcoal fires in Peter’s story.

At the first, Peter is cold, frightened, and trying not to be recognized. Questions come from people around him, and three times he creates distance between himself and Jesus.

“I am not.”

At the second fire, Jesus Himself asks the questions.

This time Peter does not pretend to be stronger than he is. He does not make another dramatic promise about what he will never do or confidently predict how faithful he will be in the future.

He simply says:

“Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” — John 21:17 (NASB)

There is something profoundly beautiful about the humility in Peter’s response. The man who once believed he knew the limits of his own courage has discovered how little he understood about himself, and instead of making another promise he cannot guarantee, he places his heart before the One who knows him completely.

Peter no longer needs to convince Jesus of his strength. He simply trusts Jesus to know the sincerity of his love, even after his actions have contradicted it.

And Jesus responds with grace.

Not by pretending the denial never happened, but by demonstrating that Peter’s failure has not exhausted His love or canceled His purpose.

“Tend My sheep.” — John 21:17 (NASB)

Consider the significance of those words. Jesus is entrusting the care of His people to a man who recently denied knowing Him. The Good Shepherd, who laid down His life for the sheep, now commissions Peter to help care for those same sheep.

Peter’s restoration is not merely emotional reconciliation. It is a renewed calling, grounded in the grace of Christ and accompanied by the responsibility to serve others faithfully.

This should encourage every believer who has ever looked backward with regret, wishing for an opportunity to change a decision, retrieve careless words, or demonstrate courage where fear once prevailed.

We cannot change yesterday.

But through repentance and faith, we can follow Jesus today.

There is also an important distinction between Peter’s response and the way many of us approach our failures. We sometimes believe that if we feel guilty long enough, punish ourselves severely enough, or spend sufficient time proving our worth, we will eventually deserve another opportunity.

But that is not how grace works.

Peter does not earn restoration through an impressive demonstration of spiritual achievement. He receives it from the Savior who knows his heart, understands his weakness, and has already accomplished everything necessary for his forgiveness.

The same grace is available to us.

That does not mean our failures are insignificant or that consequences always disappear. Sin can damage relationships, diminish trust, and create responsibilities that must be addressed honestly. Biblical restoration includes repentance, accountability, and a willingness to repair what is repairable.

Yet none of those realities changes the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice or His willingness to receive those who genuinely turn back to Him.

The Cross is greater than our failures, and the Resurrection assures us that failure does not have to be the end of our story.

Perhaps the most remarkable part of Peter’s restoration is what Jesus tells him about his future. The disciple who once promised to die for Christ but failed under pressure will eventually glorify God through his death.

Jesus already knows the faithful man Peter will become.

Peter cannot see that future yet, but Jesus can.

And that brings us to the final words of their conversation:

“Follow Me!” — John 21:19 (NASB)

Jesus does not tell Peter to spend the rest of his life trying to compensate for his denial. Neither does He invite him to remain beside the charcoal fire rehearsing every painful detail of that night.

He calls Peter forward.

There are people to love, sheep to shepherd, truths to proclaim, and a life of obedience still waiting to be lived.

The invitation that began Peter’s discipleship remains the invitation that will carry him through the remainder of his life.

Follow Me.

Those words are just as meaningful for us today.

We may carry regrets about decisions we made years ago, relationships we mishandled, opportunities we avoided, or moments when we remained silent rather than courageously honoring Christ. Some memories may still bring genuine sorrow, particularly when we recognize how differently we wish we had responded.

But Jesus does not call His redeemed people to build permanent homes in the places where they failed.

He calls us to repent, receive His forgiveness, learn from our mistakes, and continue walking with Him.

Sometimes the greatest evidence of spiritual maturity is not that we have stopped making mistakes, but that we have stopped allowing pride to keep us from acknowledging them and stopped allowing shame to keep us from returning to Christ.

Peter’s confidence had to change.

Before the denial, his confidence rested heavily upon his own determination.

After his restoration, he was learning to rest upon the faithfulness of Jesus.

That is a transformation worth pursuing.

We do not become strong Christians by convincing ourselves that we are incapable of falling. We grow stronger as we become increasingly aware of our dependence upon the One who never fails.

And perhaps that is why Jesus chose to restore Peter beside another charcoal fire.

The first fire reminded Peter of what happened when he depended upon himself.

The second would forever remind him of what happened when he encountered Christ’s grace.

One fire witnessed his denial.

The other witnessed his restoration.

The same Savior who knew Peter would fail also knew exactly how He would restore him.

That is the hope of the Gospel.

Our failures do not surprise Jesus.

Our weaknesses do not exhaust His patience.

And our past does not place us beyond His power to transform.

And when we come to Him with genuine repentance, we discover that His grace is not merely sufficient to forgive what we have done; it is powerful enough to change who we are becoming.

So the question becomes:

Am I still allowing yesterday’s failures to define my identity and limit my obedience, or am I willing to receive the forgiveness, restoration, and renewed purpose Jesus offers, trusting Him enough to leave the charcoal fire behind and answer His invitation once again: “Follow Me”?

Suggested Reading

Peter denied Jesus three times beside a charcoal fire.
