Peter begins to follow, turns around, sees another disciple walking behind them, and immediately asks about him.

Jesus answers with a question of His own: “…what is that to you? You follow Me!”

“What is that to you?” may be one of the most needed questions Jesus ever asked a disciple, because John is writing to people who struggle with exactly what Peter struggled with on that beach.

He is writing to believers who have heard a rumor that the beloved disciple would never die, and who need to know what Jesus actually said.

He is also writing to believers who look sideways. They measure their calling against someone else’s and wonder why their road is harder, shorter, quieter, or less noticed.

And he is writing to readers who never stood on that shore, who need to know that the testimony they are reading can be trusted.

These are the final words of the Gospel of John.

They do not end with a miracle. They end with a call, a correction, and a confession that Jesus is greater than any book could ever hold.

John 21:20-25 NASB
Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” So Peter, upon seeing him, said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!” Therefore this account went out among the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Character

The focus is the personal nature of Christ’s call, the danger of comparing our path with another disciple’s, the Lord’s authority over every life and every death, and the trustworthiness of the testimony John has given us.

Jesus reveals Himself as:

the sovereign Lord who assigns each disciple’s path,

the Shepherd who calls His sheep one by one,

the coming King who will return,

and the Savior whose works are too great for any book to contain.

Peter’s question teaches us that it is possible to be freshly forgiven, newly commissioned, and still distracted by someone else’s assignment.

Jesus’ answer brings him back to the only thing that was ever his to do.

The People in the Interaction

Jesus

Peter

The disciple whom Jesus loved

“The brothers” among whom a mistaken saying spread

The “we” who affirm that this testimony is true

What Happened in the Scene

Jesus has just told Peter that faithfulness will one day cost him his life, and then called him to follow.

As they walk, Peter turns around and sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following behind them. John identifies him as the same disciple who leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked who the betrayer was.

Peter has just heard his own future, and now he wants to hear someone else’s: “Lord, and what about this man?”

Jesus does not answer the question Peter asked.

He tells Peter that if He wants that disciple to remain until He comes, it is not Peter’s concern. Then He repeats the command, this time with emphasis: “You follow Me!”

John then pauses to correct a misunderstanding. A saying had circulated among the believers that this disciple would not die. John points out that Jesus never said that. He only said, “if.”

Finally, the Gospel closes with two statements.

The first identifies the beloved disciple as the witness behind the book and affirms: “…we know that his testimony is true.”

The second admits that Jesus did many other things, so many that if every one were written down in detail, the world itself could not hold the books.

The Gospel that began before creation ends by confessing that creation is too small to hold the full story of Jesus Christ.

Peter Turned Around

John begins with a small physical detail.

Peter turned around.

Jesus has just said, “Follow Me,” and following means facing the One who is leading. Within moments, Peter is looking in the opposite direction.

We should not be too hard on him. He has just learned that his life will end in a death he would not choose. That is heavy news, and it is natural to look around after hearing something like that.

But John wants us to notice the movement.

The first threat to Peter’s renewed discipleship is not persecution, false teaching, or fear.

It is a glance over his shoulder.

The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved

The disciple Peter sees is described in a particular way. John reminds us that this is the one who leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked who would betray Him.

That memory matters.

At that supper, Peter wanted information, and he motioned for the beloved disciple to ask Jesus for it. These two men have been side by side throughout the Gospel. They were together at the table. They ran to the empty tomb together. And they were in the boat together that very morning, when the beloved disciple recognized the Lord and Peter jumped into the sea.

They are friends, and they are different.

One recognizes first. The other acts first.

John’s title for himself is not a boast, as though Jesus loved him and merely tolerated the others. It is the identity of a man who never got over the fact that Jesus loved him.

He does not record his own name.

He records what Christ thought of him.

“Lord, and What About This Man?”

John does not tell us Peter’s motive, so we should be careful not to assign one too confidently.

Peter may have been concerned for a friend. If suffering waits for Peter, does it wait for John too?

He may have been curious.

He may have been comparing. If I must die this way, what will be required of him?

Most likely the question held a mixture of all three, because our questions usually do.

What we do know is how Jesus responded. He did not treat the question as one Peter needed answered.

There is a kind of interest in other people that is love, and another that is distraction. From the outside they can sound identical.

Jesus knows the difference.

“What Is That to You?”

This is the heart of the passage.

“…what is that to you?”

Jesus is not telling Peter to stop caring about John. He has just commanded Peter to tend His sheep, and the beloved disciple is one of those sheep.

He is telling Peter that John’s future is not his responsibility to know, manage, or measure himself against.

There is a difference between caring for a brother and needing to know God’s plan for him.

Peter is responsible to love John.

He is not responsible to audit what Jesus has assigned to John.

“What is that to you?” draws a boundary around Peter’s obedience. Inside the boundary is everything Jesus has asked of him. Outside is everything Jesus has asked of someone else.

Peter has enough inside the line to fill a lifetime.

“If I Want Him to Remain”

Notice who decides.

“If I want him to remain until I come…”

Jesus speaks as the One whose will determines how long a disciple lives and how that life ends.

That is an extraordinary claim. Only days earlier He was crucified. Now He stands on a beach calmly stating that the length of John’s life and the manner of Peter’s death rest in His hands.

This is the authority of the risen Lord.

It is also deeply comforting. Neither Peter’s martyrdom nor John’s long years will be an accident. Neither will happen because Rome is powerful or because circumstances are random.

Both lives are held by the same hands that were pierced for them.

“Until I Come”

Jesus mentions His return almost in passing.

He does not explain it or defend it. He assumes it.

Earlier in this Gospel He promised His disciples that He would come again and receive them to Himself. Here, in His last recorded words in John, that promise is still the horizon.

The disciples’ work has an endpoint.

Peter will follow until death. John will remain as long as Christ wills. Every believer since has lived somewhere between those two callings, and all of us live toward the same day.

The last thing Jesus says about the future in this Gospel is not a date.

It is a certainty.

He is coming.

“You Follow Me!”

A few verses earlier Jesus said to Peter, “Follow Me.”

Now He says it again, but not in quite the same way. In the Greek text, the pronoun “you” is stated and placed first, which gives it emphasis. Our English translations capture that by adding the word: “You follow Me!”

The first call was an invitation.

The second is a redirection.

You, Peter. Not him. Not what I am doing with him. You.

This is how personal the call of Christ is. Jesus does not issue a general policy for disciples and leave us to compare results. He looks at one man and gives him one command.

The same is true for us.

We will not stand before Christ to answer for another person’s calling.

We will answer for whether we followed.

Comparison Works in Both Directions

We usually think of comparison as envy.

Why does he get the easier road?

Peter could have felt that. He has just been told he will die for Christ, and the man behind him has been told nothing of the kind.

But comparison also works in the other direction.

Why does she get the significant assignment?

Peter was publicly restored and commissioned to shepherd the flock. John could easily have wondered why Peter, the one who denied Jesus, received such a prominent charge.

Envy says: My road is worse than yours.

Pride says: My road is better than yours.

Both take our eyes off Jesus.

In 2026 we have more opportunities to compare than any generation before us. Every day we can scroll through other people’s ministries, marriages, careers, platforms, and answered prayers. We can know in seconds what God appears to be doing in a thousand other lives.

And Jesus still asks the same question.

What is that to you?

Two Disciples, Two Roads, One Lord

Peter’s road would end in martyrdom. Jesus has already told him so.

John’s road would be long. Scripture later shows him exiled on the island of Patmos for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus, and early Christian tradition holds that he lived to old age. We do not need the tradition to understand the passage, but it fits what Jesus says here.

One disciple would glorify God by dying.

The other would glorify God by remaining.

Neither calling was the superior one.

We sometimes assume the dramatic road is the faithful one and the long, quiet road is second best. Scripture does not agree. It takes grace to die for Christ. It also takes grace to live for Him decade after decade, to outlive friends, to keep bearing witness when the world has moved on.

Even within one family, the roads differed. John’s own brother James was the first of the apostles to be killed, early in the book of Acts, while John lived on.

The same Lord assigned both.

Faithfulness is not measured by how our road compares with another believer’s. It is measured by whether we walked the one Jesus gave us.

How a Rumor Started

Then John does something unusual. He stops to correct a rumor.

A saying had spread among the believers that the beloved disciple would not die before Jesus returned.

It is easy to see how it happened. Jesus said, “If.” Someone repeated it without the “if.” A hypothetical became a prediction, and the prediction traveled.

John’s correction is simple. He goes back to the exact words.

Jesus did not say that he would not die. He said, if I want him to remain.

This is a valuable lesson in how to handle the words of Christ.

The early believers were not inventing something out of nothing. They were repeating a real saying of Jesus. They simply drew a conclusion that Jesus never stated and then treated it as though it were His word.

That still happens.

Sincere Christians can build confident expectations on what they assume a verse means, and when those expectations fail, faith can be shaken. If John had died while this rumor was still believed, some might have concluded that Jesus was wrong.

Jesus was not wrong.

The rumor was.

The remedy is the one John models: go back and read what the text actually says.

“This Is the Disciple Who Is Testifying”

Now the Gospel identifies its source.

The disciple whom Jesus loved, the one who leaned against Him at the supper, stood at the Cross, ran to the tomb, and recognized Him from the boat, is the one who bears witness to these things and wrote them.

This matters because Christianity is not built on religious ideas that floated free of history.

It rests on testimony.

John was there. He saw the water become wine. He heard Jesus call Lazarus out of the tomb. And he watched the soldier pierce Jesus’ side, and he told us that, at that point in the story, the one who saw it has testified so that we also may believe.

The Gospel of John is the account of someone who saw, heard, and touched, and who spent the rest of his life telling the truth about it.

Who Are the “We”?

The verse continues: “…we know that his testimony is true.”

Interpreters have long discussed who the “we” is.

Some understand it as John himself speaking, as a writer sometimes does. Others understand it as believers who knew John, perhaps leaders in the churches he served, adding their confirmation to his witness.

The text does not settle the question, and we do not need to settle it here.

Either way, the meaning is clear. This testimony was not a private claim that no one could examine. It was known, received, and affirmed by those in a position to know.

Throughout this Gospel, John has called witnesses: John the Baptist, the works of Jesus, the Father, the Scriptures, the Samaritan woman, the man born blind, Thomas.

The last witness in the book is the church saying, in effect:

We know this is true.

More Than the World Could Contain

John’s final sentence is a confession of how much he left out.

Jesus did many other things. If every one of them were written in detail, John supposes that the world itself could not contain the books.

Is that exaggeration? It is certainly a vivid way of speaking. But it is not empty.

John opened this Gospel by telling us that all things came into being through the Word. If that is who Jesus is, then everything He has done is not limited to three years of ministry in Galilee and Judea. His works reach back before creation and forward into eternity.

No library could hold that.

This also tells us something about the Gospel we have just finished reading.

It is selective on purpose.

John already told us why. Jesus performed many other signs that are not written in this book, but these were written so that we would believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in His name.

Scripture does not tell us everything we might like to know.

It tells us everything we need in order to believe, to live, and to follow.

John Ends Where He Began

Step back and look at the shape of the whole Gospel.

It opens with the Word who was with God in the beginning, through whom all things were made.

It closes by saying the world He made is not large enough to hold the record of what He has done.

In its first chapter, Jesus finds a man and says, “Follow Me.”

In its last chapter, He says it again.

Between those two calls, John has shown us water turned to wine, a Samaritan woman given living water, five thousand fed, a blind man given sight, and Lazarus raised. He has let us hear Jesus say, “I am the bread of life,” “I am the light of the world,” “I am the good shepherd,” “I am the resurrection and the life.” He has taken us to the upper room, the garden, the courtyard, the Cross, and the empty tomb.

And after all of it, the application is two words.

Follow Me.

Why “What Is That to You?” Is Good News

At first this question can sound like a rebuke.

Read in context, it is a gift.

Jesus is taking a weight off Peter’s shoulders. Peter does not have to understand John’s future. He does not have to explain why one disciple suffers, and another is spared. He does not even have to make the callings come out.

That is Christ’s work.

Much of our anxiety comes from carrying questions Jesus never assigned to us. Why did God allow that in her life and not in mine? Why was his prayer answered and mine was not? And why has that ministry grown while mine has stayed small?

Jesus does not always answer those questions.

He does free us from needing the answers before we obey.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Following Jesus Is Personal

Christ does not call disciples in bulk. He calls each one by name and assigns a road to each.

2. Comparison Turns Us Around

Whether it produces envy or pride, comparing our calling with another believer’s takes our eyes off the One we are following.

3. Jesus Is Lord Over How Long and How Hard

The length of our lives and the nature of our trials are held by the same risen Lord who held Peter’s and John’s.

4. Handle the Words of Christ Carefully

A rumor grew from a dropped “if.” We honor Jesus by reading what He actually said and not adding our assumptions to it.

5. The Testimony Is True, and the Call Still Stands

John’s Gospel was written by a witness so that we would believe. Its final command is still addressed to every reader: “You follow Me!”

Final Reflection

There is something very human about Peter turning around.

He has just experienced one of the most gracious moments of his life. His denial has been met with forgiveness. His calling has been restored. Jesus has trusted him with His sheep and told him honestly what the future holds.

And within a few steps, Peter is thinking about someone else.

“Lord, and what about this man?” — John 21:21 (NASB)

Most of us recognize that question because we have asked it in a hundred different forms.

What about the believer whose life seems easier than mine? What about the person who walked away from God for years and now seems more blessed than those who stayed? And what about the friend who was healed, the coworker who was promoted, the family that never seems to struggle?

What about them, Lord?

Jesus does not shame Peter for asking. But He does not answer him either.

“…what is that to you? You follow Me!” — John 21:22 (NASB)

There is freedom in those words that we often miss.

Jesus is not dismissing Peter’s concern for his friend. He is releasing Peter from a burden he was never meant to carry. Peter cannot follow Jesus while walking backward. He cannot tend the sheep entrusted to him while studying the assignment given to another shepherd.

Neither can we.

Comparison rarely announces itself as sin. It usually arrives looking like fairness, or curiosity, or even concern. But its effect is almost always the same. It leaves us either discouraged because someone appears to have more, or proud because someone appears to have less.

In both cases we have stopped looking at Christ.

The remarkable thing is that Peter learned this lesson. Years later, he wrote to suffering believers and urged the elders among them to shepherd God’s flock willingly and humbly, as examples rather than as lords. He served alongside John in the early chapters of Acts without any sign of rivalry. And when his own road finally led where Jesus said it would, he walked it.

John learned it too.

He remained. He outlived the others. And he wrote this Gospel so that people who never saw Jesus could believe in Him, and he signed it not with his name but with the only description of himself that mattered to him: the disciple whom Jesus loved.

Two very different lives.

One Lord over both.

The question was never which disciple received the better calling. The question was whether each would follow the Christ who called him.

This brings us to the end of the Gospel of John.

We began with words that reached back before time: in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. We watched that Word become flesh and dwell among us. We followed Him to a wedding, a well, a pool, a hillside, a stormy sea, a temple court, and a tomb in Bethany. We listened in an upper room as He washed feet and promised the Spirit. We stood near the Cross and heard Him say, “It is finished.” We came to the garden on the first day of the week and found the stone removed.

John told us why he wrote all of it.

So that we would believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing we would have life in His name.

And then, having given us everything we need to believe, he admits there is far more that could be said. The world could not hold the books.

That is a fitting way to finish, because it means we never come to the end of Jesus.

We can finish reading a Gospel. We can complete a study. We can close a series.

But we will spend eternity discovering how much more there is to know about the One who made all things, laid down His life for His sheep, rose from the dead, restored a broken disciple beside a fire, and is coming again.

Until that day, His last recorded command in this Gospel remains our daily assignment.

Not “understand everything.”

Not “compare yourself with everyone.”

And not “figure out what I am doing in someone else’s life.”

Follow Me.

So the question becomes:

Am I still looking over my shoulder at what Jesus is doing in someone else’s life, or am I willing to trust Him with their story and mine, receive the testimony John has given, and answer the call He addresses to me personally: “You follow Me”?

Suggested Reading

Jesus Appears on the Road to Emmaus: The Christ Who Opens the Scriptures (Luke 24:13–35)
<iframe loading="lazy" class="wp-embedded-content" sandbox="allow-scripts" security="restricted" style="position: absolute;
