Jesus has died, risen, and ascended.

Isn’t the story finished?

Luke answers that question in his very first sentence. Writing to the same man who received his Gospel, he describes that earlier book as the record of:

“…all that Jesus began to do and teach.” (Acts 1:1, NASB)

One word in that sentence changes how we read everything that follows.

Began.

The Gospel of Luke was not the complete account of the work of Jesus. It was the beginning. Acts is what He continued to do and teach, no longer walking the roads of Galilee, but reigning from heaven and working through His people by His Spirit.

That is the key to this book.

Acts is not the story of what the church accomplished after Jesus left.

It is the story of what Jesus accomplished after He ascended.

The Verse That Outlines the Book of Acts

Before He ascended, Jesus gave His disciples a promise and an assignment in a single sentence.

Acts 1:8 NASB
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.”

This is the purpose statement for Acts and also the table of contents.

Jerusalem (Acts 1–7). The Spirit comes, the church is born, and the Gospel fills the city.

Judea and Samaria (Acts 8–12). Persecution scatters believers, and the message crosses its first great barriers.

The remotest part of the earth (Acts 13–28). Paul and his companions carry the Gospel across the Roman world until it reaches Rome itself.

Jesus said it would happen in that order.

Acts shows that it did.

The Author

Acts does not name its author, but the evidence points in one direction, and the early church was consistent on this point.

It was written by Luke, the same man who wrote the third Gospel.

Both books are addressed to Theophilus. Acts opens by referring back to “the first account.” The language and style match. Together, Luke and Acts form a single two-volume work that makes up more than a quarter of the New Testament.

Paul calls Luke “the beloved physician,” and Luke was one of Paul’s traveling companions. In several places, the narrative quietly shifts from “they” to “we,” suggesting the author was present for parts of what he describes.

Luke was not one of the Twelve.

He was a careful investigator, a faithful friend, and a man who stayed with Paul when others had left.

God used a doctor with a historian’s mind to record how the church began.

When Was Acts Written?

Acts ends with Paul under house arrest in Rome, still waiting for his case to be heard.

Luke does not tell us the outcome. He says nothing of Paul’s death, the persecution under Nero, or the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.

For that reason, many scholars place the writing of Acts in the early AD 60s, shortly after the last events it records. Others suggest a somewhat later date.

Either way, Acts covers roughly the first thirty years of the church, from the Ascension of Jesus in Jerusalem to the arrival of the Gospel in the capital of the empire.

The Bridge of the New Testament

Without the Acts of the Apostles, the New Testament would have a gap in the middle.

The Gospels end with a small group of disciples in Jerusalem. The letters that follow are addressed to churches in Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, and Thessalonica, and were written largely by an apostle named Paul, who never appears in the Gospels at all.

How did we get from one to the other?

Acts tells us.

It explains where the Holy Spirit came upon the church, how Gentiles were welcomed without first becoming Jews, who Paul was, and how those churches were planted.

Acts is the bridge between what Jesus did for us and how the apostles taught us to live in light of it.

Two Men, One Lord

On the human level, Acts follows two main figures.

Peter leads the first half (Acts 1–12). The man Jesus restored beside a charcoal fire stands up at Pentecost and preaches to thousands.

Paul leads the second half (Acts 13–28). The man who persecuted the church becomes its greatest missionary.

One denied Jesus. The other tried to destroy His people.

Both were met by the risen Christ, forgiven, and sent.

That alone tells us something about how Jesus builds His church. He does not begin with impressive people.

He begins with redeemed ones.

The Real Main Character

The traditional title is “The Acts of the Apostles.”

It is a fair title, but it can mislead us. Most of the apostles are barely mentioned after the first chapter, and the book is not finally about them.

Some have suggested “The Acts of the Holy Spirit,” and that is closer.

But look at how Luke tells the story.

It is Jesus who pours out the Spirit at Pentecost.

It is the Lord who adds to the church those who are being saved.

It is the name of Jesus that makes a lame man walk.

It is Jesus whom Stephen sees standing at the right hand of God.

It is Jesus who stops Saul on the Damascus road and says, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.”

It is the Lord who stands beside Paul in the night and tells him to take courage.

The risen Christ is active on nearly every page.

He is not absent from Acts.

He is directing it.

The Wisdom of Jesus in the Formation of the Church

This is the lens we will use throughout this series.

As we work through Acts, we will keep asking one question: What does this passage reveal about the wisdom of Jesus in forming His church?

Even a first reading shows patterns in the way He works.

He tells them to wait before He tells them to go. The first instruction in Acts is not a strategy. It is a command to stay in Jerusalem until the Spirit comes.

He gives power for witness, not for status. The disciples ask about the kingdom and when it will be restored. Jesus redirects them from timelines to testimony.

He builds on simple, durable things. The early church devoted itself to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Nothing in that list requires a building or a budget.

He uses opposition to advance the mission. Persecution scatters the believers, and the scattered believers preach wherever they go.

He crosses boundaries His people would not have crossed on their own. Samaritans, an Ethiopian official, a Roman centurion, and finally the Gentile world are brought in, often to the surprise of the church itself.

He chooses people no committee would have chosen. A fisherman who denied Him. A persecutor who hated Him.

He leads His church through conflict rather than around it. Complaints over the care of widows and a major dispute over the Gentiles are faced openly and resolved in ways that leave the church stronger.

The church was not a human idea that Jesus later blessed.

It was His design from the beginning, and Acts lets us watch Him build it.

The Major Themes of the Book of Acts

Several themes run through the whole book.

The Holy Spirit

The Spirit fills, sends, guides, warns, and emboldens. The church in Acts does not attempt Jesus’ mission without Jesus’ presence.

Witness

The disciples are called witnesses, people who tell what they have seen and heard. The Resurrection is at the center of nearly every sermon.

Prayer

Before Pentecost, they pray. When threatened, they pray. Before sending missionaries, they pray. In prison at midnight, they pray.

The Word of God

Again and again Luke pauses to report that the word of God kept spreading and growing. People are added, but it is the Word that advances.

Opposition

Arrests, beatings, riots, shipwreck, and martyrdom appear throughout. Acts never suggests that faithfulness leads to an easy life.

The Gospel for All People

The message moves from Jews to Samaritans to Gentiles, from a single city to the heart of the empire. No group is beyond its reach.

Why Acts Matters Today

Many believers today are discouraged about the church.

Some have been hurt by it. Some are tired of its divisions. And some wonder whether it has lost its way, and others have quietly concluded that they can follow Jesus without it.

Acts speaks to all of them.

It does not present a flawless church. It shows us hypocrisy, complaints, sharp disagreements, and frightened people. Luke hides none of it.

But it also shows us what the church is when Jesus is at the center: a praying, Spirit-filled, Word-centered, generous, courageous people who cannot stop speaking about what they have seen and heard.

Acts reminds us that the church belongs to Jesus.

He started it. He sustains it. And He has not abandoned it.

Mood and Tone

The tone is one of momentum, boldness, joy, and dependence.

Luke writes with the care of a historian and the conviction of a believer. The pace is quick, the scenes are vivid, and beneath every chapter runs a steady confidence that nothing can stop what the risen Christ has begun.

What Acts Reveals About Jesus

Before the story even begins, Luke prepares us to meet Jesus as:

The risen and living Lord.

The ascended King seated at the right hand of God.

The One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

The Head and Builder of the church.

The Savior of Jews and Gentiles alike.

The Lord who stands with His people in suffering.

The Judge who will return in the same way He went.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

Before asking what we should be doing for Jesus, Acts asks a more basic question:

Do we believe Jesus is still at work?

If He is only a figure of the past, then the church is a memorial society, and its future depends on our effort and ingenuity.

If He is alive, reigning, and present by His Spirit, then the church is His living body, and its future depends on Him.

The first disciples had no buildings, no political influence, no wealth, and no social standing.

They had a risen Lord and the promise of His Spirit.

It was enough.

Final Reflection

The Book of Acts is a beginning.

Not the beginning of a new story, but the next chapter of the same one.

The Jesus who called fishermen by the sea, opened blind eyes, wept at a grave, and said “It is finished” did not retire when He ascended. He sat down at the right hand of the Father and went on working, through ordinary men and women filled with His Spirit.

We ended the Gospel of John with a command: “Follow Me.”

Acts shows us what happened when they did.

It shows us Peter, once afraid of a servant girl’s question, standing before the same council that condemned Jesus and refusing to be silent.

It shows us ordinary believers, driven from their homes, telling the good news in every town they pass through.

And it shows us an enemy of the church becoming its servant.

And it shows us the Gospel arriving in Rome, against every obstacle.

Then the book simply stops.

There is no closing scene and no final summary. Luke leaves Paul in a rented house, welcoming all who come to him and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.

That is where the book ends, and it is a fitting place.

The story is unfinished because the work is unfinished.

What Jesus began to do and teach in the Gospels, He continued in Acts, and He is continuing still.

Every believer who has come to faith since then, every church that has gathered in His name, and every act of faithful witness in every century belongs to the same story.

Including ours.

As we begin this journey, we are not only studying how the church started.

We are learning how Jesus builds, so that we can recognize His hand in our own generation and take our place in what He is doing.

So the question becomes:

As I begin the Book of Acts, am I reading it as ancient history about what Jesus once did through other people, or am I prepared to believe that the same risen Lord is still building His church today and to offer myself as His witness wherever He has placed me?

Suggested Reading

Introduction to the Gospel of John: That You May Believe
<iframe loading="lazy" class="wp-embedded-content" sandbox="allow-scripts" security="restricted" style="position: absolute;
