For the first time, the authorities move against the apostles. They arrest Peter and John, hold them overnight, and put them on trial. Then they order them never to speak in the name of Jesus again.

Peter answers that there is no other name by which anyone can be saved.

Luke’s first readers needed this account badly. By the time Acts circulated, many believers had faced hostile officials. Some had stood before magistrates. Others had lost property or freedom. Consequently, they asked hard questions.

For example, how should a Christian respond when rulers command silence?

In addition, where does courage come from when the powerful make threats?

And finally, can the church really claim that salvation comes through Jesus alone?

This passage answers all three. It shows two ordinary men standing before the highest court in the land. Moreover, it records the claim that still defines the Christian message: no other name saves.

Acts 4:1-22 NASB
As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them, being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them and put them in prison until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem; and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent. When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people, if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.” Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another, saying, “What are we to do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let’s warn them not to speak any longer to any person in this name.” And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened; for the man on whom this miracle of healing had been performed was more than forty years old.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Character

The focus is the first persecution of the church, the boldness the Holy Spirit gives, the exclusive saving power of Jesus, and obedience to God above every human authority.

The council tries to silence the name of Jesus. However, the passage keeps placing that name at the center. Therefore, we see Jesus here as:

the risen Lord whom rulers cannot suppress,

the rejected Stone whom God made the cornerstone,

the only Savior given to humanity,

the Teacher whose companionship marks His followers,

and the Lord who keeps His promise to give His witnesses words.

The People in the Interaction

Peter

John

The healed man

Annas and Caiaphas

The priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees

The rulers, elders, and scribes of the council

About five thousand men who believe

What Happened in the Scene

While Peter and John speak to the crowd, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees arrive. The apostles’ teaching about the Resurrection disturbs them greatly. So they arrest the two men and jail them overnight.

Nevertheless, many who heard the message believe, and the number of men grows to about five thousand.

The next day, the council assembles. Annas, Caiaphas, and the high-priestly family attend. They place the apostles in the center and ask:

“By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”

Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answers. The man stands healed by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom they crucified and whom God raised. Jesus is the stone the builders rejected, and He has become the cornerstone. Furthermore, salvation exists in no one else.

The council marvels at the confidence of these untrained men and recognizes that they had been with Jesus. Meanwhile, the healed man stands in plain view, so the rulers have no reply.

After conferring privately, they command the apostles to stop speaking in Jesus’ name. However, Peter and John refuse. They must obey God, and they cannot stop telling what they have seen and heard.

The council threatens them again, then releases them because the people are glorifying God for the miracle.

The First Opposition

Luke names three groups who confront the apostles: the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees.

The captain ranked second only to the high priest and kept order in the temple. The Sadducees, meanwhile, formed the wealthy priestly party that controlled the council. They also held a distinctive belief. They denied that the dead would rise.

Therefore, Peter’s sermon struck them on two fronts. First, unauthorized men were teaching crowds in their temple. Second, those men proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. If Jesus had risen, the Sadducees would have been wrong about their central doctrine. Moreover, they had recently helped put Him to death.

So they acted quickly. Luke says they were greatly disturbed.

Jesus told His disciples this would happen. On the night before the Cross, He warned them that the world would hate them as it hated Him. Now the warning begins to come true. Accordingly, the church should never treat opposition as a sign that something has gone wrong.

A Night in Jail and Five Thousand Believers

The authorities arrest Peter and John and hold them until morning, because evening has already come.

Then Luke adds a sentence that changes how we read the scene. Many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of men reached about five thousand.

Notice the contrast. The rulers can lock up the preachers. However, they cannot lock up the Word. While two apostles sit in a cell, the church grows by thousands.

This pattern repeats throughout Acts. Each attempt to stop the Gospel ends up advancing it. Later, Paul will write from prison that the Word of God is not imprisoned.

Therefore, we should measure the health of God’s work by more than outward circumstances. On the very night the first persecution began, heaven recorded a harvest.

The Court That Condemned Jesus

In the morning, the council gathers, and Luke lists the leading figures. Annas is there, along with Caiaphas and others from the high-priestly family.

We have met these men before. A few weeks earlier, they arrested Jesus and questioned Him by night. Annas examined Him first. Caiaphas then presided as the council condemned Him and handed Him to Pilate.

Now consider where Peter was that night. He stood in the high priest’s courtyard, warming himself by a fire, and denied knowing Jesus. A servant girl’s question was enough to break him.

This time, however, Peter does not stand in the courtyard. He stands in the center of the court, before the very men who killed his Lord. The setting that once exposed his weakness now displays the power of Christ in him.

God sometimes brings us back to the place of our failure. He does so in order to show what His grace has done since.

“By What Power, or in What Name?”

The council opens with a question. By what power, or in what name, have the apostles done this?

Notice what the rulers do not ask. They do not ask whether the miracle happened. They cannot, because the healed man stands in front of them. Instead, they question the apostles’ authority.

The question sounds like an accusation. Nevertheless, it hands Peter exactly the opening he needs. The court has asked him to name the Name.

Opponents of the Gospel often do this without intending it. They demand an explanation, and so they give believers the chance to speak about Jesus. Therefore, we should learn to hear hard questions as invitations.

Filled With the Holy Spirit

Before Luke reports Peter’s answer, he tells us where it came from. Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus had promised this very help. He told His disciples that rulers and authorities would put them on trial. In that hour, He said, they should not worry about how to defend themselves, because the Holy Spirit would teach them what to say.

Here the promise comes true for the first time. A fisherman faces the most educated and powerful men in the nation. Yet he speaks with clarity and courage, because the words do not come from him alone.

Notice also that Peter had already received the Spirit at Pentecost. Even so, Luke says he was filled again for this moment. In other words, God gives fresh strength for each new test. We do not have to store up courage in advance. We can trust Him to supply it when the hour arrives.

On Trial for a Good Deed

Peter begins with a touch of irony.

If the court is examining them for a benefit done to a sick man, he says, then everyone should know how the man was healed. In effect, Peter points out the absurdity of the proceeding. The rulers have arrested two men for an act of mercy.

Then he answers their question directly. The man stands before them in good health by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene.

Next, Peter adds two clauses that turn the trial around. This is the Jesus “whom you crucified.” And this is the Jesus “whom God raised from the dead.”

Suddenly, the accused has become the accuser. The council sat in judgment on Jesus and condemned Him. However, God reviewed their verdict and overturned it. Consequently, the judges themselves now stand accused before a higher court.

Peter speaks respectfully. He addresses them as rulers and elders. Yet he does not soften the truth to protect himself.

The Stone the Builders Rejected

Next, Peter quotes Scripture to the men who taught it.

He cites Psalm 118. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. Then he applies it without hesitation. Jesus is the stone, and the members of the council are the builders.

The image fits precisely. Builders examine stones and decide which ones belong in the structure. Israel’s leaders examined Jesus and threw Him aside as unfit. However, God took the discarded stone and set it in the most important place of all. The cornerstone determines the lines of the entire building.

Jesus had quoted this same psalm to these same leaders during His final week. They understood then that He was speaking about them. Now His apostle presses the point again.

Peter never forgot the picture. Years later, in his first letter, he called Jesus the living stone, rejected by people but chosen and precious in the sight of God.

Therefore, human rejection does not settle anyone’s worth. God often builds with what others throw away.

No Other Name

Then Peter makes the boldest claim in the passage. Salvation exists in no one else. He declares:

“…there is no other name under heaven…”

God has given no other name among people by which we must be saved.

Consider how far Peter has moved. The court asked about the healing of one man. Peter answers by speaking about the salvation of the whole human race. The same Jesus who made a lame man walk is the only One who can rescue anyone from sin.

Many people today consider this claim arrogant. However, it does not exalt Christians. Peter does not say that his group is better than others. Instead, he says that everyone, including himself, needs a Savior, and that God has provided exactly one.

Moreover, the claim rests on who Jesus is. If He truly is the Son of God who died for sins and rose again, then no alternative exists. No one else has done what He did.

Notice also the word “must.” Peter assumes that every person needs to be saved. Accordingly, the exclusive claim of the Gospel comes joined to a universal invitation. There is no other name, but that name is offered to all.

They Had Been With Jesus

Luke then tells us how the council reacted.

The rulers observed the confidence of Peter and John. They also understood that these were:

“…uneducated and untrained men…”

That phrase does not mean the apostles could not read or think. Rather, it means they had no formal training in the rabbinic schools. They were laymen, without credentials.

As a result, the council could not explain them. Ordinary fishermen should have trembled before that court. Instead, they reasoned from Scripture with boldness.

Then the rulers arrived at the only explanation available. They recognized that these men had been with Jesus.

This remains the best thing anyone can say about a Christian. Education has value, and so does training. Nevertheless, neither can replace time spent with Christ. People notice when someone has been in His company. His words shape our words, and His courage becomes ours.

The Council’s Dilemma

The rulers now face a problem they cannot solve.

The healed man stands beside the apostles. Therefore, Luke says, they had nothing to say in reply. So they send the apostles out and confer among themselves.

Their private conversation reveals a great deal. They admit that a noteworthy miracle has taken place. Furthermore, they admit that everyone in Jerusalem knows it and that they cannot deny it.

Yet notice what they never discuss. No one asks whether the apostles might be telling the truth. No one suggests examining the claim that Jesus rose. Instead, they ask only how to keep the news from spreading.

This shows the real nature of their unbelief. They did not lack evidence. They lacked willingness. As we saw in the Gospel of John, people can stand before an undeniable sign and still refuse the One it points to.

So they choose suppression. They decide to threaten the apostles into silence.

“We Cannot Stop Speaking”

The council summons Peter and John and commands them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

The apostles reply with a question and a statement. First, they ask the rulers to judge for themselves whether it is right before God to obey them rather than God. Then they say:

“…we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

This answer gives the church an important principle. Scripture teaches believers to respect governing authorities. However, that authority has a limit. When any human power commands what God forbids, or forbids what God commands, Christians must obey God.

Notice how the apostles handle the moment. They do not insult the council. They do not threaten or plot. Nor do they hide their intentions. Instead, they state openly what they will do and accept the consequences.

Notice also why they cannot be silent. They are witnesses. They saw the risen Jesus and heard Him speak. Therefore, silence would amount to denying what they know to be true.

Released

In the end, the council can only threaten the apostles again and let them go.

Luke gives the reason. The rulers found no way to punish them because the people were all glorifying God for what had happened.

Then he adds a final detail. The man who received this healing was more than forty years old. In other words, the whole city had known his condition for decades. The evidence stood too firm for the council to overturn.

So the first attempt to silence the church fails. The apostles walk out free, the Word continues to spread, and the name the rulers tried to bury is on everyone’s lips.

The Wisdom of Jesus in the Formation of the Church

In this series, we keep asking what each passage reveals about the wisdom of Jesus in forming His church. The first trial of the apostles teaches us several things.

He prepares His people for opposition before it comes. Because Jesus warned them, the arrest does not shake their faith.

He uses persecution to give His witnesses a larger audience. As a result, the Gospel reaches the nation’s highest court.

He supplies words at the moment of need. The Spirit fills Peter when the question comes, not before.

He chooses unqualified people on purpose. Consequently, observers must conclude that they have been with Jesus.

He builds the church on an exclusive claim. The message is not one option among many. There is no other name.

He teaches the church where its final loyalty lies. His people honor rulers, but they obey God.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Expect Resistance

Faithful witness will sometimes provoke those in power. Therefore, opposition should not surprise us.

2. Trust the Spirit for the Hard Conversation

We do not need to script every answer in advance. Instead, we can rely on the Helper Jesus promised.

3. Hold to the Only Savior

Our culture prizes many paths. However, the Gospel still says there is no other name.

4. Spend Time With Jesus

No credential can substitute for His company. Moreover, people can tell the difference.

5. Obey God First

We respect human authority. Nevertheless, when it contradicts God, we know whom to follow.

6. Speak About What You Know

A witness tells what he has seen and heard. Likewise, we can tell what Christ has done for us.

Final Reflection

Picture the courtroom.

About seventy of the most powerful men in the nation sit in a semicircle. They wear the robes of their office. They hold the authority to imprison, to flog, and to hand a man over for execution. Only weeks ago, they used that authority against Jesus.

In the middle stand two fishermen from Galilee.

What the Council Saw

By every ordinary measure, the fishermen should have been terrified.

They had no legal training and no powerful friends. Furthermore, one of them had already collapsed under far less pressure. In the high priest’s courtyard, Peter could not withstand a servant girl.

Yet the council looked at these men and marveled. They saw confidence where they expected fear. Then they remembered where they had seen such composure before. They had seen it in Jesus, when He stood in the same room.

The apostles had been with Him, and it showed.

We cannot manufacture that kind of courage. However, we can spend time with the same Lord. We can listen to His words, speak with Him in prayer, and walk with Him through ordinary days. Over time, His likeness appears in us, often without our noticing.

Therefore, the most important preparation for a hard moment is not a technique. It is nearness to Christ.

Why the Claim Is Kind

Now consider the sentence at the heart of Peter’s defense.

“…there is no other name under heaven…” — Acts 4:12 (NASB)

Many people hear those words as narrow or harsh. In fact, they are among the most hopeful words in Scripture.

Think of the man who had just been healed. For forty years, nothing helped him. Then the name of Jesus accomplished in a moment what nothing else could. He did not resent the fact that only one name had the power to heal him. On the contrary, he leaped for joy that such a name existed.

The same holds for salvation. If no one could save us, the news would be terrible. If many could, the Cross would have been unnecessary. Instead, God has given one Savior who is fully able, and He offers Him freely to everyone.

So the claim does not shut a door. It points to the door.

When Silence Is Not an Option

Finally, hear what the apostles said when the rulers ordered them to be quiet.

They could not stop speaking about what they had seen and heard.

They did not say they would not stop. They said they could not. The reality of the risen Christ had so filled them that silence became impossible.

Most of us will never stand before a court for our faith. Nevertheless, we feel quieter pressures every day. A workplace, a classroom, or a family table can make it seem wiser to say nothing. Consequently, we learn to keep Jesus to ourselves.

The remedy is not guilt. Rather, it is a fresh look at what we have seen and heard. When we remember what Christ has done, speaking of Him becomes natural again.

The rulers tried to bury a name, and instead they heard it proclaimed in their own court. No power on earth has ever silenced it since.

So the question becomes:

Have I spent enough time with Jesus that others can tell, and when pressure comes to keep quiet about Him, will I trust His Spirit and speak about what I have seen and heard?

Suggested Reading

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin: When the Judge Was Judged (Luke 22:66–71)

Does Your Faith Allow You To Stand Firm In The Face Of Difficulty?

Who Are You Voting For?
