Instead, he describes how the believers treated one another. They were of one heart and soul, and they refused to let any member go without.

Luke writes this for churches that contained both rich and poor. In the Roman world, wealth divided people sharply. Therefore, when landowners and laborers joined the same congregation, real questions arose.

For example, did the Gospel change how believers thought about their property?

In addition, what did unity mean in practice, beyond warm feelings?

And finally, how could a church tell genuine devotion from a mere show of it?

Luke answers by returning to Jerusalem. First, he paints a picture of a church with one heart and soul. Then he introduces a man named Barnabas as a living example. As we will see in the next post, he also prepares us for a sobering contrast.

Acts 4:32-37 NASB
And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them. And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all. For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales and lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be distributed to each to the extent that any had need. Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of Encouragement), owned a tract of land. So he sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Character

The focus is the unity of the believers, their open-handed generosity, the powerful witness to the Resurrection, and the example of Barnabas.

Luke names Jesus only once in these verses. Nevertheless, His character shapes everything in them. Accordingly, the passage reveals Him as:

the risen Lord to whom the apostles bear witness,

the Source of the grace that rests on His people,

the One who became poor so that others might become rich,

the Shepherd who makes one flock out of many kinds of people,

and the Master who raises up encouragers for His church.

The People in the Interaction

The whole congregation of believers

The apostles

Joseph, called Barnabas

Owners of land and houses

Believers in need

What Happened in the Scene

Luke describes the inner life of the growing church. The whole congregation was:

“…of one heart and soul…”

Furthermore, no one claimed that anything he owned belonged to him alone. Instead, the believers treated their possessions as available to all.

Meanwhile, the apostles kept giving testimony to the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and abundant grace rested on everyone.

As a result, no needy person remained among them. Those who owned land or houses sold them from time to time. Then they brought the proceeds and laid them at the apostles’ feet. The apostles, in turn, distributed the money to each person according to need.

Finally, Luke gives one example. A Levite from Cyprus named Joseph owned a field. The apostles had given him the name Barnabas, which means Son of Encouragement. He sold the field, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

One Heart and Soul

Luke begins with the inner condition of the church. The believers shared one heart and soul.

That statement grows more remarkable when we remember the numbers. The congregation now included well over five thousand people. They came from different regions, spoke different languages, and belonged to different social classes. Nevertheless, Luke says they were united at the deepest level.

Notice also where this unity came from. It follows directly after the prayer meeting, where the Spirit filled them all. Therefore, their oneness did not result from similar personalities or a clever program. The Holy Spirit produced it.

Jesus prayed for exactly this. On the night before the Cross, He asked the Father that His followers would all be one, so that the world would believe. Here we see the Father answering His Son.

Real unity does not require agreement on every preference. Instead, it requires a shared love for Christ that outweighs everything else.

No One Claimed Anything as His Own

Next, Luke shows how that inner unity appeared outwardly.

Not one of the believers claimed that his possessions belonged to him alone. They held everything as common property.

We looked at this practice in Acts 2, and the same cautions apply here. The believers still owned their property. Luke says so in the very next verses, where owners decide to sell. Moreover, no one forced them. In the following chapter, Peter states plainly that a man’s land and money remain under his own control.

So what changed? Their attitude changed. They stopped thinking like owners and started thinking like stewards. In other words, each believer regarded his goods as a trust from God, available whenever a brother or sister had need.

This strikes at something deep in us. We instinctively say “mine.” However, the Gospel teaches us that we ourselves belong to Another. Once we grasp that we were bought with a price, our grip on everything else loosens.

Great Power and Abundant Grace

In the middle of this description, Luke inserts a sentence that seems to change the subject.

With great power, the apostles continued to testify to the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus. In addition:

“…abundant grace was upon them all.”

Why does Luke place the preaching between two statements about generosity? Because the two belong together.

First, the Resurrection produced the generosity. People who believe that Jesus conquered death hold this world’s goods lightly. They know that their true inheritance lies ahead.

Second, the generosity strengthened the preaching. The apostles announced a risen Lord, and their hearers could see a community that lived as though it were true. Jesus said that everyone would recognize His disciples by their love for one another. Accordingly, the love of the church gave weight to its words.

A congregation’s life either confirms its message or contradicts it. In Jerusalem, the two matched, and the witness carried great power.

Not a Needy Person Among Them

Luke then reports the practical result. There was not a needy person among them.

That sentence echoes the Law of Moses. In Deuteronomy, God told Israel that if the people obeyed Him, there would be no poor among them. Israel never fully reached that ideal. Now, however, Luke uses the same language for the church. In the community of the Messiah, the old promise begins to come true.

Notice how it happened. No government program accomplished it, and no apostle issued a decree. Instead, individual believers saw needs and chose to meet them. From time to time, those who owned land or houses sold them and brought the proceeds.

Therefore, the church cared for its own. This did not exhaust its compassion, since believers also did good to outsiders. Nevertheless, it started at home. A congregation that neglects its own members has little credibility when it speaks about the love of God.

Laid at the Apostles’ Feet

Luke mentions a detail twice. The givers laid their money at the apostles’ feet.

That action carried meaning. To lay something at another person’s feet was to place it under his authority. In other words, the givers surrendered control. They did not attach conditions, direct the funds toward favorite causes, or use their gifts to gain influence.

In addition, the arrangement protected the poor. The apostles distributed the money to each according to need. Consequently, no needy believer had to approach a wealthy patron and become indebted to him. Help came from the church as a whole.

This teaches us something about giving. Generosity can become a quiet way of holding power. However, the believers in Jerusalem gave freely and then let go. They trusted their leaders to act faithfully.

Of course, that trust places a heavy responsibility on leaders. As the church grew, the apostles found the task too large, and in Acts 6 they will appoint others to oversee it.

Joseph, Called Barnabas

After the general picture, Luke gives a specific example.

A man named Joseph belonged to the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. However, almost no one called him Joseph. The apostles had given him another name. They called him Barnabas, which means Son of Encouragement.

Think about what it takes to earn a nickname like that. People around him had watched how he spoke and acted. Then they concluded that encouragement defined him. Wherever Barnabas went, others came away strengthened.

Luke briefly introduces him here, but he will become one of the most important figures in Acts. Later, when the believers in Jerusalem fear the newly converted Saul, Barnabas will stand up for him. He will welcome Gentile converts in Antioch. Furthermore, he will travel with Paul on the first missionary journey and give a second chance to a young man named Mark.

In every case, he does what his name says.

Encouragement That Costs Something

Barnabas first appears in Scripture through a single act. He owned a field, sold it, and brought the money to the apostles.

Notice that his encouragement cost him something. Kind words matter a great deal. Yet Barnabas did more than speak. He looked at his brothers’ and sisters’ needs and gave up something valuable to meet them.

Notice also what he did not do. He did not announce the gift or keep a portion while pretending otherwise. He simply laid the money down.

Luke records this for a reason. In the next passage, a couple named Ananias and Sapphira will perform the same outward act with a very different heart. Barnabas therefore serves as the genuine article. He shows us what Spirit-prompted generosity looks like before Luke shows us its counterfeit.

Every church needs people like Barnabas. They may never preach a famous sermon. Nevertheless, they hold the body together.

The Wisdom of Jesus in the Formation of the Church

In this series, we keep asking what each passage reveals about the wisdom of Jesus in forming His church. These six verses show us how He shapes its inner life.

He creates unity by His Spirit. As a result, thousands of different people share one heart and soul.

He changes hearts before He changes habits. Generosity flows from a new attitude, not from a rule.

He joins love to witness. Consequently, the church’s life supports the church’s message.

He cares for the poor through His people. No one in need is overlooked.

He builds trust between members and leaders. Givers let go, and leaders distribute fairly.

He raises up encouragers. Barnabas shows that the church needs strengtheners as much as it needs preachers.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Pursue Unity of Heart

We will not agree on everything. However, we can share one love for Christ.

2. Think Like a Steward

Everything we have comes from God. Therefore, we hold it for His purposes.

3. Let Your Life Back Up Your Words

People listen more readily to a message they can see lived out.

4. Notice the Needs Around You

The believers met needs because they saw them. Likewise, we must pay attention.

5. Give Without Strings

Lay the gift down and let it go. Otherwise, generosity turns into control.

6. Become an Encourager

Ask God to make you the kind of person who leaves others stronger.

Final Reflection

Suppose someone gave you a nickname based on the effect you have on other people.

What would it be?

The apostles looked at a man named Joseph and chose the name Son of Encouragement. Evidently, he left that impression on everyone he met.

The Kind of Person a Church Needs

We tend to admire the visible gifts. We notice the preacher, the leader, and the person with the dramatic story. Barnabas possessed none of the fame of Peter or Paul. Nevertheless, the church could hardly have grown without him.

Consider what lay ahead. One day, a former persecutor named Saul would arrive in Jerusalem, and every believer would shrink from him. Barnabas would take him by the hand and bring him to the apostles. Later, a young man named Mark would fail badly on a mission trip. Barnabas would give him another chance, and, according to early tradition, that young man went on to write the Gospel of Mark.

In other words, much of the New Testament traces back to people Barnabas refused to give up on.

Encouragers rarely make headlines. However, they make everyone else’s ministry possible. Therefore, if God has given you a heart to strengthen others, do not think of it as a lesser gift.

What Our Possessions Reveal

Now consider the field Barnabas sold.

Luke could have introduced him in many ways. Instead, he chose to show us what Barnabas did with his property. That choice makes sense, because the way we handle money exposes what we really believe.

The believers in Jerusalem had come to see their goods differently. They no longer said, “This is mine.” As a result, when a brother or sister lacked something, the solution was obvious.

Most of us will never sell a field. Yet the same question reaches us in smaller ways every week. Do we hold our time, our homes, and our resources with a closed hand or an open one? When we hear of a need, is our first instinct to protect what we have or to share it?

A changed heart eventually shows up in a changed wallet.

Grace Upon Them All

Finally, remember the phrase at the center of the passage.

“…abundant grace was upon them all.” — Acts 4:33 (NASB)

That grace explains everything else. The believers did not manufacture unity by effort. Nor did they give out of guilt. Rather, they had received astonishing kindness from God, and it overflowed.

Jesus left the riches of heaven and made Himself poor for their sake. He laid down far more than a field. Consequently, those who understood His gift found it natural to give.

Generosity is not the price of belonging to the church.
